Summary Diaspora, Memory, and Places. Ukrainians from Poland of Ί 980s in Canada. Ethnographic Study The book is dedicated to the migratory experience of Ukrainian immigrants from Poland to Canada, their practices and narrations of memory, and com munication between migrants and Poland. The empirical basis derives from ethnographic field studies conducted in 2014-2016 in Edmonton and Toronto in Canada. In total the research lasted 12 months, during which I conducted a long-term participant observation, ethnographic unstructured interviews and narrative interviews, typical for the biographical method. In addition, private correspondence, newsletters and websites of diasporic organizations, as well as materials posted by the respondents on social media were analy zed, and the results of field and internet research were integrated as part of the whole analysis. The subject of my attention was a group of people of Ukrainian descent who came from Poland to Canada in the 1980s. I tried to show the phenome non of migratory memory and its impact on the formation of diasporas with regard to this group of Ukrainian descents. My intention was also to fill the gap in anthropological research on migration and diasporas, and in research on emigration overseas from Poland in the 1980s. Immigrants got to the Ukrainian diaspora, which was well organized and which was operating an established discourse about the past, where there is no place for the local history of Ukrainians from Poland. I look at the role and significance of images and concepts of Poland and Ukraine in their lives,
their involvement in wider Ukrainian context in Canada, contacts with the local Po lish diaspora, problems with unambiguous identity assignment, and a speci fic group distinction which is a challenge for the essentialistically understood diaspora. In return, I propose to consider the Ukrainian diaspora as a transna tional imagined community in accordance with the theoretical proposal of M. Sökefeld, and to follow the attitudes, practices and ideas of both the diaspora and of the native country, as inspired by R. Brubaker. The core of the conceptual model that I use in my book is the triad dia spora-memory-place. Such, as I say, an inseparable constellation is - in my opinion - a very useful conceptual apparatus for studying migration pheno mena. In subsequent chapters, I discuss each term and present the proposals for their operationalization - each time in the context of empirical data. The indicated triad of terms is complemented by a set of concepts used in modern migration studies, such as, for example, transnationality / transnationalism,
344 DIASPORA - PAMIĘĆ - MIEJSCA transnational links / networks, transculturality, and identity. I draw on the achievements of research leaders of migration studies (eg A. Portes, T. Faist. S. Vertovec, Basch, Glick-Schiller and Szanton-Blanc) and apply such theore tical inspirations in my research project. I try to present that following diasporic practices, idioms, attitudes and projects, as well as manifestations of essentialization in diasporas allows us thereby to grasp the practices of self-positioning, the phenomenon of mobi lity of diaspora borders, and how bottom-up definitions either diverge from cultural practice or strengthen it. Therefore, I reconstructed how the content and patterns of cultural memory are reproduced in the Ukrainian diaspora in Canada and how the content and patterns of memory of Ukrainians from Po land correspond with them. The research concerned memory, but I also ana lyzed the notions of Ukrainianness , the significance attributed to immigra tion, the diaspora, the family country, Ukraine as imagined homeland, home, borders, states, national and ethnic issues, as well as relations of power and subordination in the scope of by whom and how Ukrainian cultural memory is designed, how Ukrainian organizations are created and how they become an arena of power and domination in the sphere of means, figures and dis courses of memory. I was also interested in how gender, generation, separa tion and distance shape these images and meanings. A wider context and historical background were inevitable. Within them the following topics are
discussed: the history of Ukrainians in Poland, the hi story of Ukrainians in Canada (including the specificity of diaspora relations). These issues are particularly important due to the fact that the Ukrainian dia spora in Canada is very diverse - it is made up of the representatives of se veral, sometimes distant, migratory waves, people who have been motivated by various reasons (economic, political, ethnic, personal). One cannot forget about the complicated history of Polish-Ukrainian relations, which influenced decisions of migration of Ukrainians living in Poland (in interwar Poland and the Polish People s Republic) and could influence the defining of homelands, as well as could shape interethnic relations in the migratory circumstances. The methodological and autoethnographic reflection is also very impor tant in the book. I devote a lot of attention to my own entanglement and the problems I have encountered in the field. During the research I followed the participants of the research (shopping, organization of social meetings, holi day trips, etc.), I participated in festivals and other meetings of members of the diaspora (formal and informal), I mapped places important for them churches, cemeteries, library, institutions with ethnic profile, clubs, discos, shops and hairdressers. In the research process, I engaged the senses and the emotional sphere, making them research tools. Sometimes during the research I was discomforted. When I was thinking about its shape and cause, I discove red that it was because of the interlocutor s silent identification of me
with the Polish nation and, consequently, by assigning to me the expectations of an apology that allegedly impersonated Polish-Ukrainian relations. It made me realize that the specter of this kind of ethical asymmetry will always be pre sent during our meetings, because people basically see other people through
Summary 345 the prism of nationality, a community of memory from which someone co mes from or whom they are associated with, and their contexts, practices, dis courses and ideas which are believed to accompany them. During my rese arch, I often entered the space that Michael Herzfeld (2007) names as cultural intimacy and describes as one of the ways to define and understand the pa inful spheres of cultural sensitivity . I could observe its effect when difficult issues from the Polish-Ukrainian past, such as massacres of Poles in Volhynia and Eastern Galicia, circled over me and my interlocutor. The role of memory in migratory, resettlement, or dispersion circumstan ces and in diaspora conditions is extremely important, but also poorly recog nized and usually underestimated by researchers. What makes such recogni tion even more difficult is the domination of European concepts of memory (J. Assmann, M. Halbwachs, P. Nora) in memory studies, under which memory is examined as a derivative of the category of nation and citizenship immer sed in a relationship with the nation state. Therefore, contemporary theories of memory, placing it in a stable, unchanging environment, are inadequate to study the memory of immigrants (Creet 2011). The memory of Ukrainians from Poland is closely related to their migration and examining it provides knowledge about their identity ambiguity, modification and manipulation of belonging to particular communities within the Ukrainian and Polish diaspo ras. These people have a unique position and tools to undermine their own culture and
fulfill it with cultural inspirations from neighboring communities and a wider context. They do not treat the remembrance of their ancestors as a space for recollecting and dealing with trauma, but it still constitutes their significant identity deposit, a Brubaker s idiom that allows them to recognize themselves and distinguish from others. It gives the opportunity to grasp the specificity of the group, not reduced to any of the diasporas. The group s connection with Poland, its the attachment to local affairs, and the need to participate in the events of the Polish-Ukrainian relations that I ob served and analyzed in the book, may be considered as manifestations of re jection of full identification with the Ukrainian diaspora or a clear marking of their separateness in the diaspora as a group that has its own gravity points, different and somewhat incomprehensible for other communities within the diaspora, hi this way, they remain in their cultural framework brought from Poland, although they look more critically at it from the distance and place it in a wider, supra-local context. Recognizing the complexity of Poland s per ception, belonging and loyalty towards it, allows us to formulate the conclu sion that Poland is not necessarily the homeland of Ukrainians from Poland, but undoubtedly is a country understood neutrally as a place of birth, a place where they grew and where their relatives live/are buried. Therefore, their images and ideas are negotiated and contested, it is the object of attachment or rejection, a connector in contacts with local Poles or an
obstacle in inte gration with the rest of the Ukrainian diaspora, or emotional longing for the ideal, dreamed Ukraine. Poland makes most of my interlocutors trouble throughout their lives, be cause it forces them into explaining the non-standard nature of their situation
346 DIASPORA-PAMIĘĆ-MIEJSCA to themselves and others. This is particularly striking in Canada, where the question Where are you originally from? , which they hear from the begin ning of their stay in this country, also assumes the question of nationality. By responding that from Poland they must simultaneously explain that it does not mean that they are Poles. Over time, during contacts with the family co untry, also via the Internet, my interlocutors negotiate Poland s place on the scale of their individual identifications and define it again and again. They construct their ideas of Polishness , stimulated and powered by current po litical events, popular discourses, own trips, stories about the experiences of close relatives. Poland exists as an idea and images of places to which, even if they do not want to, they still have to relate in various social situations. r. Bayerische Staatsbibliothek München Ч_____________ ✓
