RESUME The massacre that partisans and cetniks did against Albanian people in the end of 1944 and in the begging of 1945 in Gjilan and environs, and also the migration of Albanian families to Turkey, were as a result of Serbian’s genocidai politics against Albanians, which was done for a long time, since the XIX century, after the presentation of the anti-Albanian project called Nacertannia done by Ilija Garashanin (1844), and latter many other anti-Albanians projects, as projects of Vasa Cubrilovic are, etc., which were used latter as a platform for their animal actions and monstrous crimes against unprotected Albanians continuously until the last decade. When the partisans (communists) entered in Gjilan on 16 h of November 1944, first able the start robbery of the Albanians property and in the same time arresting people named as “enemies of the people”. But, they were known as patriots, intellectuals, businessmen, imams, activists, politicians- that used to have high positions during the war, police officers etc. The President and the Secretary of the Gjilan Municipality were the first arrested and executed persons. Than, many others were executed, which were arrested before, continuously during the second half of November, in December of 1944 and in the beginning of 1945. Usually, the executions were done during the night, in the secrete by military and police authorities OZNA, partisan’s units, military and paramilitary groups of 173
Serbs from Gjilan and environs, without any court procedure with firearms and with cold steel- seldge hammer, hatchets, bayonets, wooden sticks etc. According to the information tha we have, during these months, on the streets of the town were killed about 1500 persons, mostly men but alo women, sick people, blind people, handicapped people, of different ages. They were executed in the houses, on the yard of the houses, on the streets and outside of the city. Because ofpresence of the fear in the city and environs, many of young Albanian people of Gjilan, were mobilized “voluntary in partisans units just to save their lives, but many of them were killed on the battle fields such were in Drenica, Tivar, Srem, Banat, Bosnia, Croatia etc. Only the small number of young Albanian people from Gjilan, which were mobilized in German’s “SS” units, came back alive in their homes. So, the number of massacred and missing people of Gjilan, during that time, was almost 200, but we think tha this number could be higher. After the Second World War, the repressive politics of Yugoslavian authorities against Albanians was continued, announcing them as destabilized element. They start confiscation of Albanians property, arresting them, maltreatment etc. Doing pressure on them, to make them leave their grand fathers land and to migrate to Turkey and else where. Notably, after the gentleman agreement of 1953 between Turkey and Yugoslavia, which would provide migration of hundred- thousand Albanians. Especially after the action that was taken to collect firearms in winter of 1955/56, which had
created the big insecurity in the people, the migration to Turkey 174
was accelerated. So, within few years, from Gjilan had migrated more than 100 families with more than 2000 members. Many of them left the property unsold in a mercy of the country or sold it under the price.
