Streszczenia w języku angielskim Stefania Walasek, The state school system in the North-Eastern Borderland in the years of the Second Republic of Poland Schooling in the North-Eastern Borderland of the Second Repub lic of Poland was the last in the lands of the former Partitions of Poland to be integrated into the national school system (1922). The situation existing in the Wileńskie (Vilnius) and Nowogródzkie (Navahrudak) Voivodships, because of the high level of illiteracy and the implemen tation of school duty, that is obligatory attendance, pointed to great inefficiencies that needed to be addressed shortly. Consequently, social workers, teachers, associations, local and school administration undertook a number of actions aimed to, among others, include as many children as possible in the didactic process. These initiatives, however, would encounter numerous obstacles aris ing from the parents’ lack of awareness of the need to educate their children and the necessity to secure buildings for schools. The latter of the problems became a serious issue in the context of the lack of places in schools for potential schoolchildren. The government’s guarantees as to financial support were not clearly defined, which placed the burden of funding the schools on the shoulders of the local communities and districts. Because of the severe financial problems of the local communities the realisation of the construction of new schools was slow. Towarzystwo Popierania Budowy Szkół Powszechnych [TPBSP - The Association for the Support of Construction of State Schools] made a
substantial contribution to carrying out this task through co-financing. In spite of the numerous difficulties, construction works were successfully organised, which made it possible to involve a growing number of children in school education. Antoni Wilgusiewicz, Everyday life of Polish teachers in Kresy (Poland’s Eastern Borderland) The article is based on reminiscences of the author’s mother, Stella Wilgusiewicz (née Małkiewicz), whose parents, Marian and Zuzanna Małkiewicz, were teachers working in a school in Tarnopol Voivodeship and therefore it is focused mainly on the teachers who were working in that part of Kresy. 355
Oświata i nauka na Kresach Wschodnich w XIX і XX wieku The author indicates specific aspects of teachers’ work in that region of the Second Republic of Poland such as: their minority status in society dominated by Ukrainian population, being perceived as a privileged group because of their education and holding a prestigious and well-paid job, state requirements for teachers (for example, the duty to fight against Ukrainian nationalism). Marian Małkiewicz was the head teacher of the public school in Horodnica, a small village in Kopyczynce county, near the Zbrucz River, which was at that time the Polish-Soviet border. The school was bilingual (the languages of instruction were Polish and Ukrainian), but there were more Polish teachers than the Ukrainian ones in the teaching staff. The Poles from Horodnica kept to themselves, as their nationality, religion and social status made it difficult to maintain closer relations with their Ukrain ian neighbours. Although the Polish teachers were invited by the Ukrainians to their family events (for example, weddings) and often helped them with some advice or information, the social and cultural boundaries between those two groups were respected. The teachers were required by the government to fight the Ukrainian nation alist tendencies, which sometimes caused conflicts between them and the local community (and because ofthat some of the teachers were killed by the Ukrainians during the Second World War). Because of the high level of illiteracy among the adults, Polish teachers were obligated to work also with them. They were often
responsible for organizing the social fife of the community, as well as for pre paring celebrations of important events (for example, national or state festivals and holidays). The teachers who did not follow the official policy of the Sanation Government ran the risk of losing their job or being subject to other repressions. The article shows the positive (high social and economic status) and negative (Ukrainian nationalists’ and communists’ hatred) sides of Polish teachers’ life in the Eastern Borderland of Poland before, during and after the Second World War. The teachers from the Małkiewicz Family continued their mission after the war in Silesia on the territory of Poland’s Regained Lands. Mirosława Regina Kozłowska, Education in the Vilnius Region and Nowogród Region. Ideas, concepts and syntheses presented in the periodical “Sprawy Nauczycielskie” (і930-1939) “Sprawy Nauczycielskie” [Teachers’ Matters] was a monthly period ical devoted to organisational, pedagogical and didactic issues. It was published by the Board of the Vilnius Branch of the Polish Association of Public School 356
Streszczenia w języku angielskim Teachers and came out between March 1930 and June 1939. Apart from problems related to the Association, which were always broadly discussed in the columns of this monthly (bimonthly at times), it also presented articles on the living conditions of teachers, their relations with educational and local government authorities, arrangement of educational content, scenarios for teaching the matic sections in primary schools, as well as relations between the school and local environment. The articles were mainly addressed to teachers working in country schools and schools in small towns, with many of them being written by members of this community, who shared their experiences, discussed proposals of systemic solutions, as well as methods of solving specific, more local issues. The most frequently discussed topics included the issues of regionalism in the north-east of Poland as a concept and a programme for teachers. This involved discussions on the idea of teaching in Lithuanian and Belarusian en vironments, as well as school curricula and ways of adopting them to the reafity of a multinational and multicultural school environment. Another significant issue was the low turnout in country schools. Relatively much space was devoted to articles describing village and small town environments, characterising the mentality of Lithuanians, Belarusians, Poles and those who defined themselves as “locals” and did not declare themselves members of any particular nation ality. These articles were particularly addressed to the very numerous group of
teachers coming from other regions of Poland, who needed to learn about their new environment and gain the trust of the local community in order to accomplish their goals. One of the aspects regarded as very important in shaping the relationship between teachers in a multinational school and local people was the knowledge of the Belarusian or the Lithuanian languages. All the aforementioned issues appeared and intertwined over the 10-year history of the periodical. Another important issue was the teacher’s activity in the adult world - active participation in self-governments, cooperatives, associations and village organisations. The model of a teacher-activist was widely encour aged. Apart from its mission to inform, educate and support teachers in their professional work, the periodical also tried to shape attitudes of its readers and provide help in the challenging task of building the Polish education system in the Vilnius and Nowogród Regions. 357
Oświata i nauka na Kresach Wschodnich w XIX і XX wieku Waldemar Wołkanowski, The construction plan ofioo primary schools named after Józef Piłsudski in Wileńszczyzna (the Vilnius Region) between 1936-1939 The issue of education in the eastern territories of the Second Re public of Poland is a multi-threaded subject. It took on special importance in relation to the north-eastern provinces, Vilnius and Nowogródek, because of the severest deficiency resulting directly from the earlier affiliation of these lands to the territory of the Russian Empire and the special treatment they received as western governorates. Immediately after the unification of the Vilnius Re gion and the Republic, the remedial process of the situation in education was launched. An obstacle in the implementation of ambitious plans came with the economic crisis of 1929-1933. Yet, as soon as the situation started to improve, a program aimed to improve the state of education was implemented to pursue “elimination of illiteracy and a cultural plan to increase the population of the Eastern Lands”. Regardless of the planned tasks, the program was initially established in 19ЗЗ by the Society for the Promotion of Building Public Schools. Despite its great merits and because of its nationwide character, the organization could not concentrate solely on the Vilnius Region. The program which was planned to meet those territorial conditions was initiated in May 1936 in the governmental project aimed to build 100 primary schools. The moment of this announcement was closely associated with the anniversary of placing
the urn with the heart of Marshal Józef Piłsudski and the remains of his mother in the mausoleum in the Rossa cemetery in Vilnius. The program, or as some called the action - “A hundred schools named after Marshal Piłsudski” - assumed to have elementary schools built in the Province of Vilnius within two years’ time (1936-1937) and was financed from the state budget resources. The implementation of the program encountered a number of problems, though. They were solved by keeping up to the estab lished plan since the pressure of time in that case was strong and deciding - it was intended to announce the success and then repeat the same action in the Nowogródek Region. The article is an attempt to present the most important aspects of this issue, from its origins through the implementation process and the results announcement by the highest state authorities. The author draws attention to the political and social circumstances, the human factor and propaganda, but also to the real, positive effect of the whole project. 358
Streszczenia w języku angielskim Gabriela Matuszkiewicz, Jazłowiec - the first foundation of the Sisters of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Polish lands. Its development and the tragic end The paper deals with the activities of the Congregation of the Sis ters of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Jazłowiec (at present Yazlovets in Ukraine) in the years 1863-1946. The Congregation was founded by Marcelina Darowska and Józefa Karska in Rome in 1854. The aim of the work of the Sisters was renewal of the family through education of women. The first convent of the congregation was located in Jazłowiec, a small village near Buchach (Diocese of Lviv, Ukraine). In that place, the Sisters ran a school for local children, an exclusive educational establishment for girls (secondary school) and a household. In the early years, the teaching was based on the curriculum created by the nuns, with the emphasis laid on teaching religion, foreign languages, history and geography of the Polish lands. Later the school became included in the national educational system and was run on the basis of the state law. The schoolgirls, and by 1939 there were over 1200 of them, lived in a dormitory, which promoted formation of strong interpersonal bonds. The school had been growing intensely until 1939. After the outbreak of World War II, Jazłowiec remained within the Soviet occupation zone, and later - on the territory of the Ukrainian Soviet Republic. Then the area was invaded by the German Army. Finally, in 1945, it turned out that the lands would remain
outside Poland, which was the reason why the Sisters left their nunnery. The enormity of the losses which the Congregation suffered has been difficult to estimate (library, works of art, etc.). The nuns were only able to take the statue of Our Lady ofJazłowiec (now Szymanów) with them. Today the sisters’ presence in Jazłowiec manifests itself by their running a retreat house. Joanna Lusek, Teachers seminaries of the Congregation of the Sisters of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the Eastern Borderland of Poland in the 20th century The Polish State which was being reborn was in great need of qual ified pedagogical staff. The situation was particularly pressing in this respect in the Eastern Borderland of Poland, where a state school system with the Polish language as the language of instruction practically had not existed earlier at all. According to the “Decree on educating teachers of state schools in the Pol ish State” of 1919, the education of the prospective personnel was to be run in 359
Oświata i nauka na Kresach Wschodnich w XIX і XX wieku teachers’ seminaries for men and women, which were state-run institutions maintained by the state, as well as in private centres established by communes, associations or private persons. Following the end ofWorld War I, the Congregation of the Sisters of the Im maculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary called to life three private teach ers’ seminaries for women, based in Maciejów (at present Lukiv in Ukraine), Wirów (Poland) and Slonim (Slonim in Belarus). They implemented the ideas of the founder of the Congregation - Blessed Mother Marcelina Darowska ֊ through formation of women, that is preparation of women to perform the duties and to carry out the responsibility of cultivating and passing on the sense of identity and shaping of right attitudes to succeeding generations. In the 1920s and the 193OS, the seminaries run by the Congregation of the Sisters of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary educated a total of 712 women-teachers, the majority of whom were employed in the state school system in Volhynia and Polesie. Agata Samsel, The imperial educational policy in the area of Białystok annexed to the Russian Empire (1807-1915) - the example of Białystok secondary schools According to the Treaty of Tylża of 1807, much of the area of the Białystok Region was left outside the borders of the Duchy ofWarsaw, sharing the fate of the eastern provinces of the former Republic of Poland. The fact of the annexation of the territory (since then referred to as the District of Białystok) to the Russian
Empire was confirmed by the Congress of Vienna in 181s. In con sequence, the inhabitants of the region found themselves outside the borders of the Kingdom of Poland, separated from their compatriots and homeland by the border. They were subjected to the aggressive government’s policy aimed at complete unification of the lands with the rest of the Russian Empire. One of the most effective tools to fight the Polish origin of the land then was the Russian education system. The educational policy of the Russian authorities aimed at total Russification of the young generation of Poles. The process lasted till 1915, when the Russians were pushed away by the advancing German Army. 360

Oświata i nauka na Kresach Wschodnich w XIX і XX wieku Mirosław Piwowarczyk, The role of the Union of Women’s Civic Labour in vocational educating (and supplementing vocational education) of women In the Vilnius Region in the years 1929-1939 Związek Pracy Obywatelskiej Kobiet [Union of Women’s Civic La bour] (UWCL) was one ofthe most influential women’s organizations in Interwar Poland. It took a very clear, ideological and political stance. In the spirit of the Sanation movement, it developed its political, social and educational activities in the pursuit to create a new type of Polish female citizen - an active woman interested in the affairs of the state and society. The Union was particularly involved in all kinds of pro-women activities, organising wide-scale help and support mainly in the social, legal, guardianship and educational aspects. Its activities were greatly varied ֊ in the context of education, the UWCL organised and conducted wide-scale educational campaigns in the form of specialised courses, as well as established its own vocational schools which promoted the image of an active female citizen and a model of education appropriate for its implementation, both being adopted and endorsed by the Union. The planned and implemented objectives and content of education (and training) were con ditioned by the nature and specificity of the area/region where educational campaigns were conducted. It was of great significance in the Vilnius Region where the Union played an important educational role in the years 1929-1939. Jarosław Durka, Between work and education.
The life of the Youth Labour Corps in Poland’s Eastern Borderland in the second half of the 1930s The chapter portrays the organisation and activity of the Junack ie Hufce Pracy [Youth Labour Corps] in the Interwar period in Poland. This paramilitary organisation was established on the power of the presidential decree and was subordinate to the army. Young volunteers built roads, bridges, stadiums, shooting ranges and other facilities. They filled in the gaps in their education in their spare time and in the winter period. Often, they came from poor families; despite their handicaps, illiteracy was efficiently eliminated in the organisation. The functioning of individual companies and battalions is discussed using the example of units stationed in the eastern voivodeships of the Second Republic of Poland. 362
Streszczenia w języku angielskim Ewa Andrysiak, Alfons Parczewski’s efforts to reactivate Vilnius Wszechnica and its library An important period in A. Parczewski’s life was the time of his stay in Vilnius, where he used to live for several years (1919-1933). The paper presents Parczewski’s participation in activities related to the reactivation of Vilnius University, his duties as the Rector of that institution, as well as high lights his contribution to the development of the university library. Anna Matuchniak-Mystkowska, From a familial album. Photo-essay from the Vilnius Region The collection of photo-essays from the Vilnius Region, with il lustrations prepared by Jan Mystkowski, is a sociological and historical study linking visual and biographical analyses. Familial photos and commentaries multiple case studies - concern education (primary, secondary, higher) and socialization (family, friends, organizations, army). The narrative construction covers a few topics: landscapes, sport, children games, school, showing stories of family life of the Polish intelligentsia living in the eastern part of Poland in the 1920s and the 1930s. Zbigniew Bereszyński, Gazinng at the sky. An outline of the history of astronomy in the Eastern Borderlands This concerns, in particular, astronomy. The pioneer role in this field was played by the priests of the Jesuit Order in the two cities: Vilnius and Lviv. In 1753, Father Tomasz Żebrowski began to build an astronomical observa tory in Vilnius. In 1771, the Jesuits commenced constructing a similar object in Lviv. The observatory in Lviv
worked probably until 1783, while that in Vilnius until 1876. In 189s, an astronomical observatory at the Polytechnical School was established in Lviv and in 1908 a chair of astronomy in the University of Lviv was founded, as well. When Poland became an independent state, an astronomical observatory in Vilnius was also organized. The first Polish high-altitude astro nomical observatory was opened at the top of the mountain Pop Ivan in 1938. After World War II, astronomers from Vilnius and Lviv became the pillars of the scientific centers in Toruń, Wroclaw and Warsaw. 363
Oświata i nauka na Kresach Wschodnich w XIX і XX wieku Beata Badura, “In an urn like this there was food offered to the dead in their graves”. Studies in the archaeology of the former Polish eastern territories at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries There is a small collection of archaeological artefacts brought from the Polish Eastern Borderland to be found in the Upper Silesian Museum in Bytom: one clay vessel ofWysocko culture from Chilczyce-Poczapy and two flint axes, a piece of flint point, a fragment of stone hatchet and a clay spindle whorl of Strzyżów culture from nearby Równe, among them. These items inspired the author to take a look at the history of the archaeological investigations in this area, especially those which were conducted at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. At that time, archaeology was evolving from the sphere of amateur collecting to that of scientific discipline. In this evolution, two academic centers ֊ in Kraków and Lviv ֊ played an essential role. Włodzimierz Demetrykiewicz was an archaeologist associated with the former, while Karol Hadaczek with the latter. Two archaeological sites of eneolithic Tripolye culture in Bilcze Złote were among the most important excavation sites. World War I interrupted the intensive development of archaeology as a science. Małgorzata RucKniewicz, The Kremenets Gymnasium and the post-war attempts at its reactivation The secondary school which was existing in Kremenets (Volhynia Region) between 1920-1939, was one of the most interesting phenomena in the educational field in those days.
In fact, it was an unusual network of different schools and economic units, as well. The teaching staff consisted of outstanding people. Together with their students, in a relatively short period of time, they managed to build a unique community, whose memory has been kept alive until nowadays. The school became famous not only for its high level of education and open ness to new methods, but also because of a great deal of social commitment and patriotism. The outbreak of the war brought destruction in the human and material dimension: a lot of former students lost their lives during the war and many teachers were executed in 1941. Finally, Kremenets remained within the territory of the Soviet Union as a result of the change of the bor ders in 194s. In the then Soviet city, there were no chances of reviving such an important Polish symbol. After resettlement to new Poland, some of the surviving lecturers tried to recreate the school in the Warmia-Masuria region 364
Streszczenia w języku angielskim (North-eastern Poland). The organizational committee was set up, the local powers in Kętrzyn, Mrągowo and Szczytno districts offered their full support to house the famous institution in their area. But all these plans proved impos sible to materialize in the fast changing political circumstances of the day. The communist party seized the whole power and in 1949 the central government in Warsaw dashed the lingering hopes. In the country living under Stalinist regime, there was simply no place for new Kremenets Gymnasium with its tradition and values. Jan Kopiec, Priests of the Archdiocese of Loiu as teachers in the seminaries of Wroclaw and Opole The topic presents an important and grave historical problem, related to the consequences of World War II, which ended in 1945. The time was characterized by territorial and population changes in Central Europe. The Polish state was moved in the western direction, which resulted in the loss of the Eastern Borderland territory. This led to the displacement of the Polish population and its settling in Western and Northern territories, and also to the movement of the German population from Silesia, Warmia, Gdańsk and Western Pomerania to Germany. The changes also affected the Church and the priests of the former Archdiocese of Lviv. The Archdiocese employed 487 priests in 1939, who were mostly graduates of the University of Lviv. The priests were moving westwards together with their people. One of their major tasks in the new environment was the concern for preparation and education of new priests.
After the year 1945, two seminaries were founded in the Silesian territory, that is in Wroclaw and Opole. Many priests of the Archdiocese of Lviv worked there as teachers and educators. Among them were Professor Szczepan Szydelski and the future bishop Wincenty Urban. Barbara Włochowicz, Teachers from the Borderlands. A contribution to the post-war history of Primary School No. 26 in Zabrze-Mikulczyce After the end of World War II, Mikulczyce found itself within the borders of the People’s Republic of Poland. It was necessary to create Polish education from scratch. The first teachers came from Kresy [Poland’s Eastern Borderland] (and also other regions of Poland), among others: Irena Siedlecka, 365
née Więckowska, born in Płoskirów on 9 February 1907, and Zdzisław Alojzy Mytych, born in Winniki near Lviv on 21 June, 1914. They were characterized by a high degree of enthusiasm, energy, diligence and dedication. Besides, they were good organizers, consistently striving for the set goal. Bohdan Szumyłowicz, From the Polish East to the Soviet West. Between education and entertainment on the Soviet Regional Television This article deals with the former eastern Polish borderland which ֊ beginning with 1939 - was transformed into the Soviet western peripheries. The USSR built an extensive media infrastructure in that region in order to connect various lands of the communist empire with Moscow, if not physically, then symbolically. In this process of re-defining the inhabitants’ consciousness and imagination, landscape played a crucial role, especially that of the Carpath ians. In a similar way as the Polish made use of the cinema in the 1930s, in the 1960s, the Soviets used televisual ‘gendered nature’ and romanticism to make the ‘exotic’ people of the mountains more familiar. As a result, they created a vivid and attractive media(land)scape. This mediascape was an instrument of control, but also helped to incorporate the Carpathian imagery into the Soviet visual culture. 8ayerische Staatsbibliothek München
