Abstract This book is a selection of documents stored in the archives of the Institute of National Remembrance (Instytut Pamięci Narodowej or IPN) relating to Jacek Fisiak, an eminent English scholar and a secret informant of the Służba Bezpieczeństwa (SB) — communist Polands political police. One of the docu ments is a curriculum vitae written by an SB officer (covering the years up to 1985). The present abstract will, therefore, begin with presenting Jacek Fisiak as seen in that document. Curriculum vitae of Jacek Fisiak Officer of the Order of the British Empire, member of the Polish Academy of Sciences (Polska Akademia Nauk), prof. ord. dr hab. Jacek Fisiak was born on 10th of May 1936 in Konstantynów Łódzki. From 1954 to 1958 he studied the English language and literature at the University of Warsaw; he graduated ahead of time and in 1958 he started work at the University of Łódź as assistant lecturer. In 1961 he went to London for one semester to complete work on his do ctoral thesis at the University of London. He was awarded a Ph.D. in linguistics in 1962. In 1960-63 he worked as a senior assistant at the University of Łódź. Du ring the academic year of 1963-64 he took a course at the University of Cali fornia and wrote his habilitation thesis [postdoctoral degree] there. He rece ived his habilitation at the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan (UAM) in 1965 and in December that year was appointed docent and head of the English Department at UAM. In 1969 he was appointed Director of the Institute of English at the Adam Mickiewicz University, where he worked
throughout his entire academic career. In 1965-67 he also worked as docent at the University of Łódź. He joined the communist party [PZPR — Polish United Workers’ Party] in 1966. He became a PZPR candidate on 25.04.1966 and was granted full member ship on 25.11.1966. In 1968-1970 he was first secretary of the party organisation — 343 ֊֊
in the Philology Department of the UAM, and member of the University Com mittee. After 1980 he was a staunch opponent of the anti-communist trade union Solidarity, which had strong support among the university staff. In December 1985, in recognition of his services to the communist system, professor Benon Miśkiewicz, Minister of Science and Higher Education, appointed him rector [vice-chancellor, president] of the UAM. Professor Jacek Fisiak was in favour of dismissing those UAM employees who publicly expressed opinions opposed to the communist ideology or were accused of „anti-socialist activity’ At the requ est of the Minister, he sacked the eminent philosopher, professor Leszek Nowak, former director of the Philosophy Institute at the UAM. Over 40 employees were also fired during his term of office. In 1987 he was elected for his second term as rector. He administered the University with ruthless consistency, carrying out all the directives received from the communist authorities. About the book From 1957 to 1973 Jacek Fisiak was an agent — a secret informant (tajny współpracownik, TW in short) of the secret political police of the communist regime (Służba Bezpieczeństwa, SB). For every informant the secret police wo uld open a file that consisted of two folders: the so-called personal folder which contained information about the informant and the so-called work folder. The work folder could consist of several volumes. In the case of Jacek Fisiak, one volume of the personal folder has been preserved in the form of a microfilm. Three volumes of the work folder have
also been preserved. The personal file contains information about the person, the work folder contains almost exclu sively reports. Between 1975 and 1984 Jacek Fisiak was a so-called operational contact (kontakt operacyjny, KO); there was a special folder containing information and reports on him. In total the IPN released over 1000 pages of documents related to Jacek Fisiak, a vast majority of which contains the information that Fisiak delivered to SB officers. The book contains about a quarter of these documents scanned and provided with short commentaries referring to particular sets of files. The book opens with an introduction. The chapters that follow are: a se lection of documents from the personal folder (Chapter 1), selection from the three volumes of the work folder (Ch. 2), a majority of documents from the operative contact folder (Ch. 3) and the curriculum vitae (Ch. 4). The last chapter presents concise information about the past of a few scho lars at the Institute of English, Fisiaks co-workers. — 344 —
The book ends with a short register (with photographs) of SB officers who dealt with the University, or, more precisely, did harm to it. The book contents The chapter „Dokumenty teczki personalnej” (Documents from the perso nal folder) contains reproductions of selected documents. The folder has 264 pa ges, we have selected 33 of them. The documents show that Jacek Fisiak was re cruited by Leon Korepta, a communist counter-intelligence officer (Department II at the MSW — Ministry of the Interior), on 9.04.1957. The files contain Fisiaks handwritten commitment to collaborate. Initially his code name was „Homer”, then in 1960 he changed it to „R-2”. He was also commissioned by agents of the communist intelligence to perform assignments in the USA and Great Britain. They wanted to check whether Jacek Fisiak was being „honest with the SB”, i.e. if he was not deceiving them. There are numerous receipts and other documents confirming that Fisiak accepted financial rewards, several of them are published in the book. Jacek Fisiak was removed from the network of agents in 1973. The chapter „Dokumenty z teczki pracy” (Documents from the work fol der) contains reproductions of reports. Most of them are handwritten. At the time Fisiak was reporting on foreigners (foreign correspondents, English lan guage tutors, linguists and English language professors he met abroad) and on Poles: co-workers, students, emigrants. Some documents indicate that he may have suggested to wire the apartments that were to be rented to English langu age tutors: British and US citizens. Additionally,
there is a suggestion concerning a plan to stage a provocation against a foreigner (by producing a compromising footage) with Fisiaks assistance. There are also reports made between 1968 and 1972 on foreigners: English language tutors, employees of the British Council, the US consulate in Poznań and US embassy in Warsaw, and also on employees of the British embassy. The last batch of documents refers to Jacek Fisiaks activity in Poznań (1966-1969). He was then taken over by SB officers in Poznań. Documents from that period show a similar range of targets that were spied on: the British Council, US consulate, English-speaking tutors and lecturers at the UAM and also visitors from the USA and Great Britain. Documents from the KO folder, code-named „Nowa”, have 76 pages. We have published most of them here. As an operational contact J. Fisiak was ac tive between 1975 and 1984. Among other things, the documents show efforts that Fisiak had been making to become the rector of the UAM. The last chapter deals with Jacek Fisiaks co-workers: English scholars from — 345 -
Poznań, especially those registered as TWs and those whose documents are at the IPN. There is a well-documented account regarding Marta Sienicka, who, while on scholarship at Harvard, refused to become a secret informant of the SB. Subsequently the SB forced her to return to Poland, thereby successfully ruining her academic career. Summary The book is an account of Jacek Fisiaks activity as a secret informant of the communist political police. He wrote reports on (the list: cf. pages 18/7419/74 of the KO „Nowa” files): Ճ1 foreign correspondents, Ճ1 diplomats from Great Britain, employees of the British Council and tu tors delegated by this agency, Ճ1 employees of the US consulate in Poznań and the US embassy in War saw, SI English scholars and English language teachers encountered abroad and Poles living outside Poland, SI Poles, mostly those associated with the UAM, SI students of language courses in Poznań. Acting in close cooperation with the political police, Jacek Fisiak would not only provide current information on individuals under surveillance, but also, supply the police with extensive accounts on matters such as their family relations, features of character, habits, weaknesses, etc. The documents presen ted show that he was an exceptionally valuable asset to the secret police.
