| adam_text | 1464 SUMMARY This lexicon contains names of persons and characters (extracted from works of art), geographic names, names of institutions and organizations, enterprises, newspapers and journals, and works of art and industrial products. These names are associated with additional explanations as they appear in the text, either alone or within the text that is extracted from the “Corpus of the journal ‘Përparimi’ 1955-1968”. The words (names) are lematised, i.e. are brought into their representative form, and near each word form is given the number of their occurrences in the Corpus. The Table of content of journal “Përparimi” 1955-1968 is provided at the end of this lexicon. It can serve as a full bibliography of articles published in this journal during this period of time. The “Corpus of the journal ‘Përparimi’ 1955-1968” includes 154 issues of this journal published prior to the standardization of the Albanian language, namely before the “Konsulta Gjuhësore e Prishtinës” (Language Consultation of Prishtina) (1968) in Kosovo, when “the Gheg Albanian was abandoned to adopt the unified literary (standard) Albanian based on Tosk Albanian” (R. Ismajli). With about 5 million word tokens, represented by about 80,000 word types (lemmas), this corpus is a valuable material for studying the Gheg variant of the Albanian language and stages of its development. Creating this corpus has not been an easy job. First, it was necessary to find all the numbers of the journal “Përparimi” of this period and then scan them. The images obtained by scanning were stored in .tiff format, which was
then converted to plain text for computer processing. The text was corrected prior to computer processing. Even after the first correction of the text, many words have remained without correction, since here we are dealing with a printed material that has many parasitic letters or signs. Therefore, this text had to be corrected once again while being compared to the original printed text. For this purpose, a Master’s degree student of the Albanian language was engaged. Her work should be valued. However, during the final processing of the material there was (and there will always be) a need for a third correction of possible malcognitions and technical errors. Without these corrections, the text would have many words that do not exist at all. Additionally, the need to eliminate words of foreign languages (Serbian, English, French, Italian, German, Russian, Macedonian, Turkish, Latin etc.) requires recognition (at least on a word level) of these languages. In some cases, there were some difficulties faced in this process when we were dealing
1465 with the elimination of foreign words that are written in the same way as some words in Albanian, such as: Albanian: “za” (68) voice , Serbian: “za” (264) for . Good knowledge of morphology and dialectology, along with the good knowledge of computer linguistics were also a prerequisite for the success of such a project. The need to use the internet for solving the dilemmas that arise when identifying the correct form of the various words, and especially the proper names that come out of the text, should not be neglected. The original names of the foreign authors and the names and places of publishing houses, as well as the names of journals and newspapers that were given as references in the end of each respective article or in the relevant footnote have also been presented as proper names in this lexicon. Additional presented proper names include the titles of works of art (novels, operas, paintings, etc.), which contained a proper name or have already become proper names themselves, such as the operas “Don Carlos” and “La traviata” of Giuseppe Verdi and so on. Besides the correction of technical errors, some morphological mistakes (deriving due to mistranslation from Serbian) were also corrected, for example. Dr. Bratka Krefta [= Dr. Bratko Kreftës], Filipit Strugarit [= Filip Strugarit], Gabrijel Stupici [= Gabrijel Stupicës], Karlove-Varima [= Karlovi-Vari] etc. While working on the implementation of this project, I had the unreserved help of the professional team of the Department of Professional Support and Information and Communication Technology DPSICT, of
the Academy of Sciences and Arts of Kosova, who contributed in finding and scanning the materials of the journal “Përparimi”, as well as for other ICT issues.
