Children with social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) difficulties can be among the most challenging to manage in the classroom. Their behaviour may range from being mildly disruptive to dangerously destructive, but these children can also be among the most rewarding to teach. Experienced teacher and trainer Roy Howarth helps you to understand what SEMH is, how it can affect pupils and how you can use humour and relationship management to adjust their behaviour. Ideas include how to work effectively with key adults such as parents and teaching assistants and how to use your seating plan to prevent issues from arising. With techniques for observation, intervention and differentiation, as well as preventing and dealing with significant difficulties, this book is ideal for all primary teachers. Roy Howarth has 38 years of teaching experience and was head of an SEMH school in Oxford for 23 years.
