Abstracts I. V. Poberezhnikov Modernization in Russian History: Disputable Questions The article considers disputable questions concerning the study of Russian modernization. It discusses the problem of chronological frame works as there are different views on the period when Russian modern ization started (XVI/XVII centuries, the reforms of Peter I, various land marks in the course of the XIX and the early XX centuries. The author puts forward several stages of modernization: pre-modernization before the reforms of Peter I; proto-industrial modernization starting with the reforms of Peter I; extension of modernization with a gradual shift from the proto-industrial stage to the early industrial one in the XIX - early XX centuries. The work gives reasons for possible including the Soviet period in the context of modernization changes. It considers gaps and continuation in the history of Russian modernization with relation to the reforms of Peter I, “great reforms”, the revolution of 1917 that influ enced them. The work shows the conventional and relative character of frontier lines between discrete epochs because of continuous structure tendencies, common preserving of former tendencies in the following stage, becoming of new characteristics relevant to the present epoch dur ing the previous one. The article points out the perspective character of the actor approach allowing us to consider the formation of new modern institutional order as the result of interaction and confrontation of alter native and differently directed interests - individual, group, corporate,
department ones. Using the empire modernization as an example, the author argues a more complex character of modernization forces than traditional versions involve, reducing it to the actor monopoly of a state. Zubkov Civilizational Peculiarities of Colonization Processes in History of Russia Discussing the problem of civilizational identity of Russia, the article considers the role and significance of colonization processes in the Rus sian history, their influence on the development of the country’s civili zational distinctiveness. In turn, the civilizational peculiarities of Russia, having been formed on the early stage of the country’s history, as the ar ticle argues, were subsequently in indissoluble systemic interconnection with the Russian colonization of the Eurasian space, affecting its forms and tempos. In relation to the Eurasian space, the Russian agrarian colo nization can be regarded as the civilization turnover, the earliest stage of its “modernization”. Key words: Russia, Eurasia, colonization, civilization, state, identity, territory. Լ V. Narskiy Is It Possible to Smell (Soviet) Past? Prospects And Difficulties in Culture And History of Oflaction Although the sense of smell is of neurophysiological nature, percep tion and interpretation of odors is a cultural phenomenon. It is the cul ture that determines what smells, and what stinks, whether this or that smell is well-becoming or unseemly. Discourses on smells mark geo graphic, ethnic and social boundaries. Aroma and stench can construct, tear down and reorganize social hierarchies. Smells can promote com munication or block it. Smells can be used as tools for determining one’s own and strange, native and hostile, habitual or dangerous. They can be mobilized to strengthen solidarity, expel an alien
and use violence. The importance of the history of smell follows from the fact that the olfactory environment forms an organic component of everyday life. Smells docu ment the culture of feast and celebration, mode of life. They are associat ed with the concept of hygiene and the degree of culture, femininity and masculinity, belonging to the “top” or “bottom” in the social hierarchy. V. P. Korzutt, DM. Koievatov Russian Science” Collection: Reasons of the Great Project Failures The article is devoted to the half-finished project “Russian Science” started in 1916 with two intentions. The first one was to present Russian science to the European scientific space, i.e. for Russian allies in World War I because traditional ties with German scholars had been almost interrupted. The second one was to reflect ways how the Russian science had been developing by the beginning of the 20th century, its present situation, standards and regulatory framework, which corresponded to inner scientific processes. Originally 59 features on history of particular sciences having been planned, only 14 of them were published in differ ent editions. The failure of so ambitious plan was connected with several concurrent circumstances. The authors distinguished some of them: ex treme events of the revolution which resulted in the fragmentation of scientific community and changes in the set of authors; changed com municative field of science because of international collisions and policy of the Soviet state; tendency of the arising science of science on prag matism which discorded with humanitarian orientation of the project; institutional registration of several centers for history of science and cor responding split of the unified science of science. policy E.V. Volkov The Crimean War by Academician E. Tarle: the Birth of Soviet His toriography on “the First Defense” of Sevastopol This paper considers the two-volume work The Crimean War by aca demician E. Tarle in the context of the Soviet official discourse of the Stalin period, which included the cult of the leader and ideological con cepts of patriotism and statehood. The research shows the motives of the historian in the creation of this work, the main sources and the process of working on it. The author pays much attention to the main conclusions of E. Tarle, as well as the reaction of the authorities and society to the work The Crimean War in the Soviet cultural space. The work of E. Tarle 424
is presented as the first comprehensive scientific study of the Sevastopol Defense (1854 - 1855) in Soviet historiography, as a kind of “place of memory”, from the point of view of the French historian Pierre Nora. Tarle’s work established certain research and ideological canons, accord ing to which Soviet historians studied the Crimean War. Key words: E. Kamynin Natalia Alevras about the Challenges Facing the History of His torical Studies in Modern Russia The article reveals the peculiarities of the views of Natalia Alevras on theoretical and methodological problems of modern historiography. It analyzes her opinion on the subject and modern methods of historio graphical research, it discusses the concept of historiographical source. The author attempts to note some evolution of N. Alevras’ views on these issues and determine her contribution to the development of theoretical and methodological problems of modern historiography. Key words: N. Alevras And her Colleagues The work analyzes the concept of dissertation culture offered at the turn of the first or second decades of the XXI century by historiographers of Chelyabinsk State University N. Alevras and N. Grishina and including such elements as “ dissertation”, “dissertation system”,
“historiographic living”, intellectual “byproduct”, “dissertation debate”. In the context of dissertation culture the article describes the concept of cognition of na tional science development developed by the author of the present article in the field of the Russian emigration study which is based on the recog nition of need to conduct a research of a dissertation stream structure to determine a state, tendencies and prospects of the scientific directions de velopment as well as the recognition of dissertations as a historiographic phenomenon allowing us to reveal characteristics and tendencies of study- 425
ing this or that object at different stages of national history. It concludes about the scientific potential of dissertations as an indicator of human and social sciences development in a certain and relevant perspective and it expresses confidence that interest in dissertations will only increase. Skvortsov Formation of Elements of Dissertational Culture in the Middle of the XIX Century: the Contribution of the Kutorga Scientific School On the basis of scientific works of the M. S. Kutorga and his students is investigate the problem offormation of the dissertation of culture in Russia. In their writings appears a number of new elements that will be later re quired for all theses and will serve as criteria for the evaluation of applicants. Grishina Dissertations of Representatives of the Klyuchevsky School: Re search Program Ihe author considers dissertations as reference standards of scien tific research that represent the level of science culture at a particular epoch. The work analyzes dissertations written by the disciples of V.O. Klyuchevsky. The article aims at studying the changes of the Klyuchevsky school research program. Written by Moscow specialists in the history of Russia, the dissertations of the 1890s-1910s (preamble, introduction, conclusion) allow us to elicit the basic principles of

Kotyshev The Formation of Small Towns of the Russian Land in the Late X-XI Centuries (Case Study of Belgorod Kievsky) The paper deals with the rise and development of small towns of the Russian Land during the evolvement of the East Slavonic statehood. The 426
case study of Belgorod Kievsky’s early history shows that the constantly repeated and scientifically-based assumption about the genetic succes sion between small towns and their predecessors - ancient East Slavonic settlements - is not supported by facts. Belgorod emerges in the second half of X century, probably, in 870-980, as a fortified outpost on the bor der of the chronicled Polans and Drevhans to represent the authority of Kiev princes. After Vladimir I begins active building in South Rus’ frontier, Belgorod becomes a strong fortress with vast outskirts to defend Kiev from southwest, namely, from Volhynia and Halych. From the early XI century Belgorod residents start to reclaim the countryside gradually. The rise of unfortified settlements near the town walls and even farther confirms it. Thus, Belgorod is a clear illustration of how the territorial structure was formed by small towns of South Rus’. It can be described as the following: tribal centres of Eastern Slavs emerged amid agglomera tions of “nests of settlements” as a result of primary political integration, while little towns-fortresses in Ancient Rus’, on the contrary, attracted “nests of settlements” as early as XII-XIII centuries. Zakharov Court Deployment Books of the Early XVIII Century: Informativity for the Reconstruction This article is the first attempt to study available materials to recon struct 8 Deployment Books (razriadnye knigi)
of 1701-1709 showing of tsar court’s official chronicle. It discusses the evidence about the Deploy ment Books (razriadnye knigi vsiakih del) by Moscow bureau of the Mili tary Service Chancellery (Moskovski։ stol razriadnogo prikaza) in the ear ly XVIII and their contents. They were lost in 1812. The work describes information potential and possibilities to use materials that survived to reconstruct lost Deployment Books. The author considers extracts by G.F. Miller copied from original Deployment Books in the late 1760s as the most important ones. The article presents the statistics of unique news in the source of 1701 and 1703 used in the publication “Ancient Russian Library” (Drevniaja RosiiskaiaVivliophica). It’s published frag ment of Deployment Book’s register (opis’) of the 1730s. 427

Timofeev Theory and Practice of Source Study to Research Peasant Question in Russia of the First Quarter of the XIX Century The author suggests the principle of combining the sources of public communication with a specific and uncertain destination and the method of multilateral situational analysis ofproblem situations. The work presents the results of the study of public sentiments on the peasant question in the Russian society in the first quarter of the XIX century. Based on the analysis of publications in the periodical press, investigative cases on the dissemina tion of rumors, petitions and projects, it has revealed the conceptions of Russians about possible scenarios for the abolition of serfdom in Russia. Potemkina Prospects for Use of the Investigative Cases Archives of the 1930s1940s as Historical Sources The article targets are to elicit the information potential of the investi gative cases archives on Stalin’s Great Purges for local history study and to analyze the main difficulties and prospects of them as historical sourc es. The study resulted in the conclusion about the weighty information potential of investigative files not only with regard to the Great Purges but also to the Soviet history of 1930s - 1940s. The article also deals with particularities of investigative cases

Sibiryakov Extraordinary document: the Book Reviews of Panorama Visitors “Defense of Sevastopol 1854-1855” The Article is devoted to the analysis of the research potential of such a historical source as the book reviews of visitors historical and cultural 428
exhibitions and expositions. On the example of the visitors of the Pan orama “defense of Sevastopol 1854-1855rr.” shows the problem facing the researcher using this source type, as well as the opportunities that gives this resource for analysis of a wide range of cultural and social his tory. Repina Present And Future of Regional History The article is devoted to terminological, theoretical and methodologi cal problems ofdifferent versions ofcontemporary regional history which were influenced by cultural and spatial “turns”, based on the principle of trans-disciplinarity and contextual approach. The work considers the typology of different-level historical and cultural zones, or “sub-cultures of the region”, proposed by Natalia Alevras, as well as cultural-oriented models of “new local history” and “new regional history”, the prospects for the development of regional history and its cognitive potential in spe cific and comparative studies. Neklyudov Alienation of State-Owned Mining Plants And Gold Industries in Russia in the Second Half of XIX - Early XX Century: Projects And Solutions The article is devoted to the large-scale campaign for alienation of state-owned mining plants and gold industries, launched in Russia in the 1870-1910S. The research is based on legislative acts, office records of central and regional mining administration, as
well as specialized pe riodicals. We have traced the history of the draft of Sale Rules and the list of plants assigned to alienation in the interagency Commission for revision of the system of taxes and fees, worked under the Ministry of Fi nance, and the Rules enactment by Alexander II in 1871. We have identi fied all the cases ofalienation of plants and gold industries that took place in the Urals, the Caucasus, the Donbass and the Kingdom of Poland. The 429
work distinguishes two periods in the process, and specifies that in the first period (1870-1881) there was a planned sale of businesses, and the second period (1882-1915) saw a departure from the original plan when the main ways of alienation included rent, closing plants or transfer to other departments. We have found out that in spite of complex dynamics of the alienation process it significantly reduced the state sector of min ing industry and simplified its industrial structure. Rukosuev Pre-Revolutionary Russian Historiography about Associations of Entrepreneurs Abstract: The article presents a historiographic analysis of the sci entific literature of the late XIX - early XX century on the origin and development of various types of organizations of entrepreneurs in pre revolutionary Russia. Gavrilov The Ural Mining Region Prior to the Revolution of 1917 Abstract: The author generalizes how the mining region’s socio-economical sphere of life was transforming from 1861 through 1917 and presents the changes in the ideological and political public sentiments and social psychology of miners. The article considers the attitude of Ural miming plants owners striving to free of “session laws” and, however, dependent on the government. The author stresses that by the beginning of
1917 there was a socio-political disbalance of interests of government agencies, plant owners and miners. There could have been one way to overcome the political crisis in the country and the Ural mining region - to reach social compliance among major actors of socio-economical relations. It could have promoted class harmony. However, the author accepts that the level of social, economical and political development of the country did not create conditions for it. 430

Shcherbatova Regional History And Library Study of Local Lore (about the Proj ect of the Rare Books Branch of the Scientific Library of the Chely abinsk State University) The study of regional history involves the identification of events and processes that have determined the historical and cultural appearance of the province. The article briefly describes the content of library local lore and the requirements for the creation of local lore electronic collections. Such collections should reflect the main discourses in the study of the region and reveal the most important historical processes, events and cultural traditions of the region. As an example of such an electronic re source is considered a collection on the history of the pre-revolutionary Urals from the rare books fond of the Scientific Library of the Chely abinsk State University. The content of the collection reflects the reasons and nature of the Ural “originality” and its main ethno-cultural compo nents, singled out by leading Ural historians, as well as the stages of pre revolutionary study of the region. Bozhe Chelyabinsk Crossroads In 2014 we published a book of popular science essays “Celebrities in Chelyabinsk”, telling about famous historical figures, writers, actors and politicians
who visited Chelyabinsk for one reason or another. The heroes of the book were stars of the first magnitude - K. Balmont, A. Kerensky, V. Komissarzhevskaya, B. Pasternak, S. Prokofiev and others, a total of 21 personalities. Needless to say, they do not exhaust the list of the heroes of Russian history, in whose lives Chelyabinsk pages hap pened. Therefore, we continued our work. The proposed collection pres ents 3 new essays written after the publication of the book, introducing the reader to people who are ingenious and talented. Their connection 431
with Chelyabinsk, it seems to us, makes the local history brighter and more attractive. Chatko Girl’s Costume in the Comic Songs Chastooshkas (by the Materials of the South Ural Expeditions by V. E. Gusev) lhe article analyzes the materials of the folklore expeditions by V. E. Gusev in the mining districts of the South Urals (1947-1953), in the first place mentioning a girl’s costume as well as photos, sketches, descrip tions of women’s clothing. There is quite a lot of mentioning about costumes in chastooshkas. One can meet common words for costume like a dress, clothes outfit in the texts as well as individual items like shawl, kerchief, handkerchief, dress, blouse, skirt, socks, dress “sarafan”, belt, apron, sandals, shoes “galoshi”, boots, overshoes, ribbon, comb, beads, ring, mirror; the names of the fabrics (calico, cotton, silk). In the folk songs there are not all sorts of things of a girl’s clothes but only having high semiotic status. In lyrics shawl, kerchief, boots, “galoshi” have the meaning to show girls who are mature enough and ready to get married. Mentionings about a color, material, texture of all those things have to give different delicate shades of meaning to the main content of “chastooshka”. By specifying a color and fashion of a skirt or a jacket they clarify the nature of relationships within a love couple. A dress symbolizes passive obedience to fate seen as total irresistible exter
