ճյսս Aleph - pi. Alephiot: I. The first letter of the Hebrew alphabet 2. Handwritten and decorated wall amulet for the newborn boy and his mother, used in the Romaniote communities of Greece during the forty days of confinement after childbirth. Moreover, it served as a birth and circumcision certificate. Askenazi - pl. Ashkenazim: Initially, the Jews, who settled at the Rhine River during the early Middle Ages and developed their characteristic language, Yiddish, particular customs and their own rite. Today, the term designates generally the descendants of the Jews from Central and Eastern Europe. Bimah (platform): An elevated platform equipped with a reader s desk, which is also called Tevah in Greece, from which the Law is exposed and read. The term was derived from the corresponding Greek word. Bosem - pl. Besamlm (fragrance): Aromatic spices (eg, cloves, bay leaves or myrtle twigs) are placed into a Besamim container to inhale their pleasant scent during the Havdalah ceremony at the close of the Shabbat. THE JEWISH MUSEUM OF GREECE Ehal, Heihal (palace, temple): The receptacle in the synagogue, in which the Torah scrolls are kept, and which is often integrated into an elaborate superstruction. The term is equally used by the Romaniotes and the Sephardim of Greece, in remembrance of the Heihal, the holy place in Solomon s temple in Jerusalem, whereas in English, it is referred to as Aron Hakodesh. The Ehal is situated in the synagogue at the Eastern wall, in direction towards Jerusalem. Keter Torah (Crown of the Pentateuch): I. The motif of the crown, depicted in the
Jewish ritual art, often combined with the Tablets of the Covenant, as a sign of the dignity and honour of the Torah. The motif is based on verses in the Mishna (Avot 4, 17) 2. Silver adornment for the Torah scroll. Ketubbah - pi. Ketubbot: The wedding contract or legal agreement. Handwritten or printed, the text of the Ketubbah includes the obligations of the couple for their married life. During the wedding ceremony, the text is read aloud. Kiddush (sanctification): The ceremony of the blessing of the Shabbat on Friday evening, when verses of the Torah are recited over a cup of wine. Ladino: The language of the Sephardim, also known as Judezmo. A Spanish-Jewish dialect, consisting basically of Hebrew and Spanish, enriched with Turkish and other words. In the past, it was written with the Hebrew alphabet. Lulav - pi. Lulavim: (branch of a palm tree): Represents Etz Hayim - pi. Etzei Hayim (Tree of Life): Term with one of the Four Species mentioned in the Torah (Lev. 23:40), used for the waving ceremony during the holiday of Sukkot (Feast of Tabernacles) in the Jerusalem Temple and later, in the synagogue. In a wider sense, the term refers to the composite of the tree plants -a palm branch bound together in a certain order with willow and myrtle sprigs-, which are, next to the Etrog, required for the ritual. multiple meaning, which refers, specifically in the Jewish ritual art, to the staves of the Torah scroll. Magen David (Shield of David): In the shape of a hexagram, Etrog - pi. Etrogim (citron): Represents one of the Four Species mentioned in the Torah (Lev. 23:40),
used for the waving ceremony during the holiday of Sukkot (Feast of Tabernacles) in the Jerusalem Temple and later, in the synagogue. In addition to the Etrog, a Lulav is required for this ritual. Genizah - pi. Genizot: Storage place in the synagogue, where mainly damaged Hebrew manuscripts, books, book pages or documents with religious content and ritual objects are discarded, until their ceremonial burial. Haggadah (telling, narration): Particular prayerbook for the first and, in some homes, also for the second night of Pessah (Passover), which contains mainly the narration of the Exodus of the Israelites from Egypt, songs and psalms, as well as instructions for the Seder ceremony. Haroset (derived from Heres ֊ clay, mud): Symbolic food consumed during the Seder ceremony. It usually consists of fruits, nuts, cinnamon and wine. It symbolizes the mortar used as building material by the Israelites during their enslavement in Egypt. Havdalah (separation): This ceremony is conducted to distinguish the end of the holy day of the Shabbat or other Jewish holidays, in order to separate this particular day from the rest of the week. ΊΟΤ Kashrut: A set of Jewish dietary regulations, as they have developed overtime, based on the Torah and rabbinical decisions. Food suitable for consumption according to Kashrut is called kasher. it is also referred to as the Star of David. The term “Shield of David” derives from the identification of the shape with the shield of the biblical king. The seven branched candelabrum, the Menorah, and the Magen David constitute the main symbols of Jewish
identity. The shape of the hexagram was attributed apotropaic properties. Mappah - pi. Mappot (doth, cover): I. The decorated cloth wrapper of the Tik, the Torah case 2. The decorated cloth for the reader s desk in the synagogue, on which the exposed Torah scroll is laid or placed during the Reading. Matzah - pi. Matzot: The unleavened bread consumed symbolically during the Seder night, as well as during the entire week of Passover, as leavened food is prohibited to be consumed in this specific time, according to the biblical rule (Ex. 12:8+18, Deut. 16,3). Megillah - pi. Megillot (scroll): The term usually refers to the Megillat Esther (Scroll of Esther), containing the biblical narrative of Queen Esther, which is read according to custom during the holiday of Purim (meaning lots). Me’il - pi. Me’llim (robe): I. The robe of the high priest of the Wilderness Tabemacle and the Tempie of Jerusalem, mentioned in relevant Bible passages 2. The mantle of the Sephardic Torah scroll.
Menorah - pl. Menorot (candelabrum): The specifically shaped, seven branched candelabrum of the Wilderness Tabernacle and the Temple of Jerusalem constitutes a principal artifact of the Jewish worship until today (Ex. 25, 31 -40). The Menorah is one of the holiest and most ancient symbols of Judaism and as such, the emblem of the modem State of Israel. Midrash (investigation, exposition): Particular category of rabbinical literature, consisting of collections of texts (legal, moral teachings, parables, fables), which offer interpretations to biblical texts. Seder (order): The particular Seder ritual is held on the eve of the first night, or, in some homes, also of the second night of the Pessah holiday (Passover), including the reading of the Haggadah and the consumption of symbolic food. Sephardi - pi. Sephardim: The Jews originating from the Iberian Peninsula, who settled, among other places, also in the Greek lands, after the expulsion from Spain in 1492 and during the 16th century. They differ from other Jewish communities by their judeo-Spanish language, called Ladino, their distinct customs and rite. Mishnah (repetition, Instruction): The compilation of the Sepher Torah - pi. Siphrei Torah, Sefer Torah - pi. Sifrei Torah (Book of Instruction, Book of Teachings): oral rabbinical teachings, of the oral Torah , compiled in the early 3rd century. It comprises mainly the rules of the Jewish way of life, divided into six themes: Agriculture ant temple offerings, Shabbat and festivals, civil and criminal law, marriage and divorce, sacrifice and ritual slaughter, purity and
impurity, The Scroll of the Law, the most sacred book of Judaism, It contains the first five books of the Bible, with the Law of Moses, also referred to as Pentateuch. In the synagogue, it is always handwritten in Hebrew on parchment, which is wound on wooden staves, thus forming the Torah scroll. The Torah scrolls are stored in the Ehal of the synagogue. NerTamid (Perpetual Light): I. The ever-burning light in the Wilderness Tabernacle and later, in the Temple of Jerusalem (Ex. 27: 20-21) 2. The oil lamp suspended centrally in front of the Ehal in the synagogue. Sopher Stam, Sofer Stam, Sofer ST“M (scribe): A Jewish scribe for the Torah scroll and other religious texts, who copies the sacred texts according to the requirements of the Jewish law. ST”M is an abbreviation, which stands for the words Sifrei Torah, Tefillin, Mezuzot, therefore for the primary texts, which have to be written by a Sofer. Oleh - pi. Olim: The member of the congregation, who is called up to the Bimah by a synagogue official, in order to read a section of the scriptural passage from the Torah. Rabbi (master, teacher*): Title of respect for a scholar or teacher of the Jewish law which was formed during the first centuries CE. In modem times, the title refers also to the leading official or respectively, to the religious leader of a synagogue. The title of the chief rabbi is given to the highest religious official of the Jewish communities in a city or of a country. * The expression Rabbi means originally “My master”, from Rav master + -i my. Rimon - pi. Rimonim (pomegranate): Silver or wooden finíais
with spherical or tower-like shape placed on the upper end of the staves on which the Torah scroll is wound. The name and the decoration of the finíais with suspended small bells derive from the instruction in the Bible concerning the adornment of the high priest s garment: “A golden bell and a pomegranate.”(Ex. 28:34). Shamash (servant): I. The caretaker of the synagogue 2. An extra light, used to kindle the wicks of the Hanukkiyah, the particular lamp used for the celebration of the holiday of Hanukkah. Talmud (instruction, study): The main collection of writings of the rabbinical literature, which comprises discussions and comments of rabbis and scholars of the Land of Israel (Palestinian Talmud orTalmud Yerushalmi) and of Babylonia (Babylonian Talmud orTalmud Bavl і) dating up to the early 6th century. Tevah (ark, chest): An elevated platform equipped with a reader’s desk, which is also called Bimah in Greece, from which the Law is exposed and read. Tik - pl. Tikim (case): The wooden case in shape of a cylinder or a faceted prism, used by the Jewish communities of North Africa, the Near East and the Eastern Mediterranean, including the Romaniotes, for the permanent storage of the Torah scroll. Romaniotes: Initially, the Jewish citizens of the Eastern Roman Empire, meaning the Byzantine Empire, and today, their descendants. The Romaniotes were the majority of the Jewish communities in the Balkans and in Greece until the 15th century, differing from other Jewish communities by their spoken language, Judeo-Greek -a Greek dialert intermingled with Hebrew and Aramaic words
