Abstrakt 421 Abstrakt ie ulega wątpliwości, że wiek XI byl dla Bizancjum czasem przełomowym. N Poprzednie stulecie upłynęło pod znakiem profesjonalizacji armii. Z kolei okres rządów większości cesarzy w XI w. byl czasem rosnącej popularności wojsk najemnych. Pośród wielu grup, które służyły wówczas w Bizancjum dwie osiągnęły szczególne znaczenie. Mowa tu o Waregach oraz Frankach. Głównym celem książ ki jest ukazanie ich roli w wydarzeniach, które przesądziły o dalszym losie cesarstwa bizantyńskiego. Warto pamiętać, że większość cesarzy panujących w Bizancjum w XI w. reprezen towało albo dworskie, albo cywilne stronnictwo. Armię postrzegano jako potencjalne narzędzie uzurpacji ze strony arystokracji wojskowej. Pogląd ten nie byl bezpodstawny. Z pewnością wspomniany problem wymagał rozwiązania. Niestety rządzące elity się gały zazwyczaj jedynie po dwa wyjścia: demobilizację rodzimych jednostek wojsko wych oraz zaciąganie na służbę najemników. Nic więc dziwnego, że wspomniane grupy wojowników odgrywały znaczącą rolę w kluczowych momentach historii Bizancjum. Jest jasne, że najemnicy zaciągali się na służbę w celach zarobkowych. Niektórym spośród nich udało się wzbogacić bardziej niż ich towarzyszom. Zachowało się wiele informacji o karierach zbudowanych w cesarstwie przez przedsiębiorczych Waregów oraz Franków. Co znamienne, choć przedstawiciele pierwszej grupy znajdowali się bliżej osoby cesarza, to frankijscy rycerze, mogący pochwalić się szlachetnym urodze niem, założyli na Wschodzie wpływowe rody. Powód, dla którego tak się stało, nie byl w żadnym razie przypadkowy.

If one could call the 10th cen tury the era of professionalism in the Byzantine army, then the period of most emperors from the next century was one that favored mercenaries. Among the numerous groups of foreign soldiers who served in Byzantium, two in particular achieved the greatest significance, namely the Varangians and the Franks. The main aim of this work is to demonstrate their role in the events that shaped the fate of the Byzantine Empire. Alost emperors from the 11th century represented either the court or the civil fac tion, and perceived the army as a threat that could be used by the military aristocracy at any time. While the conviction itself was far from false, the problem required a wise solution. Unfortunately, the ruling power elite had only two ideas, i.e. decomposition of the regular forces and the enlistment of mercenaries. Both groups played a signifi cant role at many crucial moments in Byzantine history. It is clear that all mercenaries enlisted for service in order to earn money. How ever, some of them managed to achieve more than others. There are many examples of the careers made by individuals from the Varangian and the Frankish contingents. Though the Varangians remained close to the emperor, Frankish nobles became high dignitaries and established influential families. The reason why members of the Frank ish
