Summary The aim of the studies included in the volume is to present in a more comprehensive way the picture of the contemporary man for whom exile has become one of the central experiences; exile understood here as a figure of human fate, i.e. as defined by Jerzy Swiçch, “a metaphor expressing most explicitly what constitutes the most severe flaw of this condition, i.e. alienation, the constant changing of places, living on the edge of two worlds and the lack of belonging to a community, providing an individual with a feeling of safety and order, hence a feeling of domestication”.1 An illustrative example for this condition is (e)migration literature where exile reflects not only the existential state of an individual, but frequendy also the process of the internal transformation of an exiled writer who endeavours to forge their wanderer’s life into a source of artistic inspiration. Therefore, the concepts of (e)migration and exile more often than not overlap, refer to the metaphorical expression of the situation of people who found themselves in foreign lands (e.g. in the works by Czeslaw Milosz or Kazimiera Wierzyński), and, if considered from the perspective of an emigrant writer, gain addidonal significance. Exile as a figure of human fate, becoming a synonym for any alienation, is rooted in myth which, in turn, is “defined [as] heritage (...), escape and commitment, choice and fate, order and contradiction”.2 It can be thus assumed that the experience of exile is related to the concept of disinherited 1 J. subjectivity (the myth of Exile) and disenchanted subjectivity (the myth of Departure). Pertinently, the myth of Departure includes also the motive of wandering, travelling, making a pilgrimage, the annihilation of the small (and the big) fatherland, a historic disaster and a fall. Its reflection is the parable of Departure, connoting motives of freedom, liberation from slavery but also “departurefrom-immaturity”.*3 Both * forms constitute two emotionally different opposite poles (pessimism - joy) and, in this context, Departure as movement towards freedom will be to some extent a contradiction of the myth, or the foretoken of its contradiction. This experience is connected with the abandonment of something familiar for the sake of something new and unexplored, the domestication of which can take the form of renewed “enchantment”, renewed entry into the myth: “Departure (...) wages war on Myth or the modern automated Western society with its repeatability, cyclicality and monotony: the inevitable result of this destructive clash is the total disenchantment of both types of sacrum, which are suspended by the modernity in a metaphysical void”.4 Works described here depict such experiences of not only (e) migrants, but also those generally referring to the condition of man in the 20th and 21st century. They were written by authors belonging to different generations (starting from Kazimierz Wierzyński, Tadeusz Nowakowski, Andrzej Chciuk, Wit Tarnawski, Adam Tomaszewski, Leopold Tyrmand, Jerzy Pietrkiewicz, Florian Śmieja, -Strauss, Struktura mitów, in: idem, Antropologia
strukturalna, trans. K. Pomian, Warszawa 2009, pp. 207—232. 3 These aspects are analysed in detail by Artur Żywioiek. See idem, Religijny mit nowoczesności. Andrzej Busza, Marian Pankowski, Edward Redliński, thorugh Zbigniew Kruszyński, Bronisław Swiderski, Janusz Rudnicki, Marek Bartelik, Krzysztof Maria Załuski, ending with Krzysztof Niewrzęda, Daniel Kožiarski, Piotr Kępiński or Piotr Czerwiński). The above mentioned authors either abrogate the ethos of exile or contribute to its creation, placing themselves as exiled writers. in case of emigrant writers of independence movement, Exile represents movement from the lost identity to the regained identity (Wierzyński, Pietrkiewicz). In case of “younger” ones (e.g. Swiderski, Kruszyński, Niewrzęda or Suskiewicz), Exile takes the figure of alienation and the disintegration of identity. The question about individual identity, examining (or deliberating over) “one’s self” from the position of determined, own cultural features, allows keeping the distance from the socially imposed and sanctioned norms. However, in case of the “youngest” writers - Kozierski or Miklasz - it is a compensation of cultural and spiritual complexes, while in case of Bartelik, it seems to be the conception of liberated subjectivity. In Pankowski’s fiction it is possible to find the resonance of Gombrowicz’s echoes of “departure-from-immaturity”. Czerwiński s fiction, in turn, explores this idea as a source of desire to obtain a renewed order and utopia. I certainly hope that the broad perspective undertaken in this volume allowed the indication of various models of (e) migration and different poetics. The volume includes various strategies of “being an emigrant” and “being in exile”. A wide selection of
analyzed texts authored by writers belonging to different generations, connected to different geographical spaces (from the USA and Canada, through Brazil, Great Britain, Sweden and Germany), not only validates the recollection and revalorisation of the definition of (e)migration but also the provision of its new possible meanings. The fate of an emigrant, forced to abandon their fatherland, is marked by the necessity of gradual, renewed process of rooting down 368 -
or domestication (in a milder version it entails assuming the attitude of multiculturality). Taking a passive stand, in turn, leads to alienation and results in melancholy and longing for the “land of childhood”. Such accents resound still in the fiction by Swiderski, Kruszyński, Niewrzęda, amplified not by a nostalgic tone yearning for the lost fatherland but by questions about the possibility of rebuilding the fragmented and broken identity. In the works by the members of the younger generation (Kozierski, Miklasz, Suskiewicz), such issues are displaced by documenting the harsh (e) migrant every-day reality. Their fiction is full of descriptions of activities allowing them to survive, to obtain material safety or to undermine the cultural order found in the new country. What was mockingly and grotesquely depicted by Redliński or Rudnicki, in Miklasz’s and Kozierski’s prose, here resonates in a very serious manner. The model of the protagonist also underwent transformation: from the often stereotypical depictions of a Pole who is a Catholic and patriotic oppositionist, through a citizen of the world, a nomad, an expatriate, to a contestant of the world (the culture). The times in which such a revolutionary model of Polish (e) migration prose originated also play a significant role (after Swiçch), i.e. the period of Polish emigration after 1945, the marital law, the transition of the political system in 1989, the Polish accession to the European Union and the opening of borders. All the events carried a change in the paradigm, violently broke the bonds and their
“groundbreaking” force required starting everything from scratch and looking for the lost continuity. “Polish issues” - having a strong presence in the past (“traces of the past”) ֊ were either questioned by the writers of the “younger” generation or totally displaced. Their place was taken by matters of the presence of an individual in a new, globalised world. Exile-inscribed (e) migration became a state (not necessarily related to leaving a fatherland, e.g. in Niewrzçdas fiction), making it possible to “read” oneself anew and to determine a personal identity. 369
It seems to be a difficult experience. It is worth remembering that the condition of an exile is inscribed with trauma related to alienation, lack of roots and homelessness. If it is well though-over and overcome, if an author chooses to take this path - they have a chance to find themselves in a new reality, thus to discover themselves anew or to become new-born. These measures were mythized in the (e)migration prose to a smaller or larger extent. After looking for the most comprehensive formula which would reflect these literary efforts, I found them in the autobiography by Jerzy Pietrkiewicz. The author of Na szali losu CIn the Scales ofFate: An Autobiography) wrote in his work: “Myth and exile are two forces, through a process of trial and error leading to personal integration” (p. 22). Indeed, writers made an effort to describe this state in a creative way. Frequently, they laboured under the illusion of life in a foreign country, dreaming of a better firture, facing every-day difficulties, attempting to understand themselves and the surrounding world. As a result, most novels are of universal nature. Exile, treated as a unique condition, acts in the function of a magnifying glass in which it is possible to see more clearly not only national but also purely human faults. But not every story ends with finding inner peace by its protagonist. On the contrary. Especially in the prose of the generation of the “young” (e) migrants, there are many losers, sociopaths, persons disillusioned by the world (after all for them geographical space does not matter anymore) and having
a demanding attitude towards the external reality. Protagonists in Wierzynski’s, Chciuks or Smieja s prose, could survive in exile as they had support from the strong bonds with the past; the narrator in Busza or Pietrkiewicz sought refuge in various mirrors of culture. The protagonist in “young” fiction in place of ideas cancelled by transformation, found nothing which could provide their existence with any meaning, thus giving birth to rebellion and frustration. However, this experience does not give rise to any new idea. 370
The change of place of residence, geographical displacement does not review anything, quite the contrary, only leads to the deterioration of this condition. The protagonist of “young” prose is like a nomad, who found themselves on a desert without food and water. As a consequence, nomadism as a lasting condition of man in the 20th century, existing on a never-ending journey and attempting to build a provisional every-day reality, has been questioned in the 21st century. It did not become the remedy for overcoming the modern crisis. Exile, in turn, is a continually experienced state of every individual since such is the world and, in the words of Czeslaw Milosz, “in order to express the existential condition of the contemporary man, [the artist] should live in a certain exile”,5 as they have to ennoble their fate by attributing this experience with an equally unique and universal character so that it can become a worthy subject of literary depiction. 5 C.
