SUMMARY THE YOUNG CITY {JUNGSTADT) IN GDAŃSK (1380-1455) AND ITS TERRITORY hanges in the topography of fourteenth-century Gdańsk and the excep tionally rapid growth in the population of the Main City persuaded the Teutonic Knights in 1377 and 1380 to establish fhrther city localities. The Young City was founded on the Vistula as the third self-administering com munity of the Gdańsk settlement. The aim of these actions was to increase the tax income that the Order could raise from Gdańsk, from 170 marks received from 1342 to more than 800 that flowed into the Orders coffers at the start of the fifteenth century. Limits in city jurisdiction also helped to earn money; the Order retained supervision over the Bollwerk — in the building of which it probably par ticipated - and the city brick-works. A similar situation was true of the Gdańsk Old City, where the Teutonic Knights kept control of the Radunia Canal and the plots of land adjacent to it. The maximum size of the settlement zone (30 ropes in length and with a vari able width to bank of the Vistula, that is, ~20 to 8 ropes) indicated that the city was treated as an investment. The Order counted primarily on the fact that the development of the Young City would bring it new financial inflows. The aim of weakening the strength of the old commune (the Main City), which is men tioned in the relevant literature, seems to have been secondary, the more so that, at least until the end of the 1430s, inhabitants (and even citizens) of the Main City remained citizens of the district on the Vistula. This indicates that the bur
ghers did not consider the Young City to be any competition at the time, but rather treated it as a suburb that was excluded from its jurisdiction, but in which it was worth investing anyway. In matters of commerce, the Main City had a superior position in relation to the Young City’s port (the Bollwerk). This related both to fiscal matters (pound custom fees were settled at the Town Hall of the Main City, and the register of vessels arriving at Wisloujs'cie was shared by both ports), and to maritime mat ters, which resulted from the allocating to the Main City Council the fhnction of maritime court for the Teutonic Orders state. When they paid pound customs C 417
dues, merchants were subject to Hanseatic regulation. The matter of recognition of letters issued under the seal of the Young City in the Netherlands and England was similar: here, too, citizens of the Young City were accepted in terms of the rights of German merchants. Research has indicated that the thesis is probable that those of the citizens of the Young City who participated in long-range commerce were considered members of the Hansa although their settlement did not belong to the union of Hanseatic cities. Only the abuse of citizenship letters from the Young City by foreign merchants in the second half of the 1430s resulted in an inflammation of relations between the Main City and the neighboring commune. An analysis of the political-economic ehte of the Young City makes it possible to claim that part of its members maintained family and financial links with the Main City—and, to a lesser degree, with the Old City. This is true, among others, of the Setheler, von Kanten, Rycquin, Stoltzefhss, and Wittenburg families. Among these, only Peter Stoltzefhss successfully married into Main City patrician circles he married the widow of Heinrich Heyland). In addition, it is noticeable that it was probably Young City reasons that allied the Baumgarten, Everd, and Proite families, members of which belonged among the patrician class of the Main City and Old City just after the Thirteen Years’War. Perhaps at the start of the fifteenth century, the ancestor of the goldsmith merchant family Giese was connected with the Young City. Establishing these quite numerous links is
possible since they were all recorded, above all, in Main City sources. Because of these limits, the material relating to representatives of the Young City elite is modest. They were new people, connected only with one locality. However, it appears that pressure to maintain a distinction between members of the elites of individual Gdańsk communes was connected with a growing conflict among the estates in Prussia, and, to a lesser degree, with the infiltration of the locality by foreign merchants. The Young City was not a center that could compete with the main City on equal terms. Despite having a significant space for settlement, its rights in its own port (the Bollwerk) were restricted in favor of the Teutonic Knights. Furthermore, in connection with the changing social situation, the city never attained its pro posed size. In 1391, it consisted, for sure, of around 200 inhabitants; by 1400, that number did not exceed 1,000. Further development (at the end of the 1420s, there were perhaps as many as 3,500 inhabitants) was interrupted by the destruction wrought by the Hussite Wars. I estimate that at the beginning of the 1450s, the population of the Young City did not exceed 2,000. If one takes account of eco nomic and demographic data, one can state that at least up to the 1430s the Young City was regarded by the patrician class of the Main City as an auxiliary settlement. The liquidation of the Young City in January and February 1455, the destruc tion of houses and other buildings (which may have been frequently mortgaged 418 SUMMARY
property), and finally the growth of fiscal burdens connected with the military situation, led to the impoverishment of the society of the ravaged locality. People who decided to remain in Gdańsk and who did not have their own houses or fami lies there were removed to reserves of free land - near Heweliusz and Łagiewniki Streets (where they erected the new Church of St Bartholomew, patron saint of the destroyed city) or in the Old Suburb (Stare Przedmieście) and, perhaps, around the Long Gardens (Długie Ogrody). It is worth noting that Rzeznicka (Butcher) Street took its new name from the guild transferred here from the Young City. The last mayor of the Young City, Nicolaus Stoltzefhss, also known as Heyland, who possessed property in the Main City, was co-opted in 1455 into the council there. The remainder of the members of the authorities of the Young City were not so lucky. Stoltzefhss s colleague Augustyn Gleibitz invested his capital, inter alia, in a range of rents, part ofwhich he later transferred to the Hospital of the Holy Spir it. Being in possession of a more substantial fortune, he was forced in 1461 (along with other merchants, some of whom came from the Young City) to make over to the City 2,000 marks and to make a fresh oath of allegiance to the Council and to the Polish King. The treasurers of the Young City merged with the common folk of Gdańsk - Heinrich Knobeloch settled in the Old Suburb (Stare Przedmieście), and Simon Seeburg was still living somewhere in Gdańsk in 1467. However, Stoltze fhss or Heyland, despite his inclusion in the governing
corporation, remained un reconciled to his formal drop in status. In September 1455, he left Gdańsk forever, running off with, inter alia, the seals of the Young City. The property that he left behind was confiscated, and his children only recovered a part of it after 1467. After the destruction of the locality, the fates of the elite of the Young City clearly show that only a few of the persons among them could meet the economic, political, and social demands to aspire to join the patrician circles of Gdańsk. If all this is taken into consideration, it seems very improbable that the Main City in its destruction of the neighboring settlement wished only to liquidate com petition or was, indeed, fired by a desire for revenge. The Young City was too small, poor, and politically inactive, and, further, too strongly tied to the Main City to pro voke such emotions. Since we can eliminate arguments about a structural conflict between the Gdańsk communes, we are forced to recognize that the key cause was military threat from the Teutonic Order in the winter of 1454 to 1455, and that an intermediate cause was experiences drawn from the defense of the northern section of the Gdańsk agglomeration at the time of the Hussite attack in 1433. The Young City lasted for barely seventy-five years, and yet it left a trace in the collective consciousness of the people of Gdańsk. The memory of the de stroyed community developed, introducing into the discourse many half-truths, including that of bitter competition between the communities. This is nothing SUMMARY 419
strange - historians have always tried to illuminate historical processes in a ra tional manner. One of the worries among modern historians of Gdańsk in the second half of the sixteenth century was the at that time contemporary problem of putting limits on the prerogatives of King Casimir Jagiellon, and the result of those prerogatives that was the monopoly position of the port of Gdańsk. At tempts to build up competition to contemporary Gdańsk trade and commerce were so current that these were echoed in historians’ interpretation of documents concerning the Young City. The issue of citizenship is also presented in the study. It is argued that it is necessary to reflect once again on the closed nature of the societies of individual communes in cities that had two or more of these. Despite legal particularism, the citizens ofTeutonic Order Gdańsk worked together more closely (especially in trade and commerce) than is customarily thought. In turn this inclines one to analyze in the firture the social-political changes that took place within Gdańsk at the end of the Teutonic Knights’ period and during the Thirteen Years’ War. Particularly, qualitative research would be valuable into divisions within the rul ing group and among the common folk, and into their instability at times of war. Certainly, the ecclesiastical structure of Gdańsk requires fhrther research (both of a historical and architectural nature). It is likely that in the 1450s — still before the division of the City into six parishes (1456) — the separate parish of Saint Bartholomew was established. Material
relating to the Hospital of All the Holy Angels makes it possible to reconstruct the medieval outer appearance of the church and to establish its principal transformations in modern times (up to its destruction in 1807). A separate issue discussed in this study is an attempt to establish the extent of the area of setdement. This will be helpfhl for those conducting archaeological research now and in the future. Even if part of the medieval buildings of Gdańsk was destroyed at the end of the 1880s as a result of the construction of the Oliwa Gate (Brama Oliwska) goods station, the remains of buildings must still be pres ent on this site. The importance of archaeological research, but also the necessity of interdisciplinary cooperation in interpreting discovered objects, is shown by the discovery in 2014, on the building site for the Tryton office block, of a golden gulden minted between 1417 and 1448 in the county of Moers in the Rhine land. During the final stages of completing this study, the author realized that the final argument as to the localization of the Toung City will be put forward by archaeological research. Meanwhile, during emergency archaeological work conducted by Maciej Marczewski and Tomasz Zielenkiewicz in excavations on Robotnicza Street, the remains of a domestic building from the first half of the fifteenth century were discovered. Although the excavation still does not make 420 SUMMARY
it possible to judge the entire extent of the area of settlement, we can already as sert that the main lines of the composition of the City founded in 1380 can be confirmed. The character of the building discovered indicates that the majority of houses were wooden or erected with a skeleton construction. We can express a hope that in years to come the source base for the history of the Young City will be substantially broadened thanks to archaeological research conducted, above all, on the site of the former Schichau Shipyard. To sum up — this study establishes, inter alia: 1) the location of the area of settlement of the Young City and the extent of its legacy; 2) the number and (as far as is possible) the localization of sacred buildings and structures in this settlement; 3) changes in the status of the Church of St Bartholomew; 4) de mographic changes within the Young City; 5) the links between the political elite of the Young City and the Main City, and their contacts with the Teutonic Order; 6) the role of the port of the Young City as an auxiliary center to the post on the Motlawa River; and 7) the fact of the partial destruction (at least) of the Young City by Hussites in 1433. The study also extends our knowledge of: 1) the structure and make-up of the authorities of the Young City; 2) the development of handicrafts and the rental market in the Young City; 3) the cause of the de struction of the Young City and the course of this process; and 4) the fates of the former inhabitants of the destroyed community. Although the state of surviving sources (and the lack of
the majority of Young City archives) makes it impossible unambiguously to resolve a range of other de tailed issues, it must be acknowledged that these new findings constitute a sufficient basis for claiming that I have realized the aim of my research — to fifi a substantial gap in our knowledge of the history of Gdańsk, and, more broadly, of “new cities” in the Teutonic Order s state, by an attempt to present a monograph devoted to the Young City. An understanding of the role of this community and of its complex and rather unhappy fate makes it possible better to understand not just the history of medieval Gdańsk, but also the history of its later spatial transformations. One must note that in the second half of the fifteenth century, the entire settlement area of Gdańsk - from the recently founded Franciscan Monastery (after 1419) to the Hospital of All the Divine Angels — stretched for a length of two and a half kilometers! The prohibition on building outside the walls introduced in 1455 led to a consolidation of the structures of Gdańsk, and, in consequence, the emergence of a city that in its urban outlines survived up to the Second World War.
