SUMMARY Bondar O. M. Historical Topography of Chemihiv in the XIV- XVIII Centuries. Monograph. The monograph analyzes the available historiography of the research on the historical topography of Chemihiv which begins in the XIX century. It is represented by the works of such researchers as M. Markov, M. Markevich, S. Kotlyarov, V. Khizhnyakov and A. Yarigin. Their studies devoted to the topography of Chemihiv in the X-XIII centuries, which were on materials, such as descriptions and plans, of the XVIII century. During the Soviet era these studies were continued by historians, archaeologists and architects such as: P. Smoličev, V. Baran-Butovich, M. Khosostenko, I. Ignatkin, M. Yatsura, I. Edomakh, Kamabed and V. Kovalenko. Since 1991 began a new stage in the study of the historical topography of Chemihiv in the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries. Among modem scholars studying the topographic development of Chemihiv in the XIV-XVII centuries, one should highlight the work of A, Adruh, I. Ignatenko, T. Növik, Y. Sity, О. Chernenko, S. Lepiavka, E. Vodzinsky, S. Shubovich and others. In the study of the historical topography of Chemihiv in the XVI- XVIII centuries a number of different sources were used. First of all, it is the chronicles of XIV-XVIII centuries, public-legal acts, economic and military records, private law, historical and statistical descriptions of the city of the second half of the XVIII century, memoirs and travel diaries. During the study, material sources from the historical topography of Chemihiv were analyzed. They are represented by artefacts gained as
a result of archaeological explorations and excavations carried out on the territory of Chemihiv. Illustrative sources are mainly represented by topographic and cartographic materials. At the same time, some features of the development of Chemihiv can be found on iconographie works of the second half of the XVII-XVIII centuries, for example, on the Elets miraculous icon of God's mother. Images of Chemihiv from the XIX - early XX centuries depicted parts of the city's landscape and architectural and archaeological features that did not survive after the beginning of the XXI century. In the monograph the role of the natural-landscape factor on the formation of urban space is considered. First of all, the influence of the historical topography of ancient Chemihiv on the formation of the historical topography of Chemihiv in the XIV-XVIII centuries was determined. Particular attention was paid to the relationship between the inhabited area and water resources of the rivers Desna, Strizhen and Kordivka. The development of defensive fortifications, the restoration of which began 3
at the end of the XIV century, was characterized. During the XIV-XVII centuries the main role in the formation of the city was played by the Upper Castle. It was located in the southern part of the former medieval fortifications and was separated from its fortifications by a broad moat. From the second half of the XVII century the fortress becomes the main fortified area of the city. It was built on the defensive remnants of the Old Rus fortifications dated to the XXIII centuries. It is undergoes several stages of reconstruction and redevelopment. This was the case due to the development of artillery. In the first half of the seventeenth century, wooden walls and towers were turned into earthen ramparts with bastions. The fort was rebuilt according to the Dutch Fortification Schools. At the end of the XVII century, the city receives another defensive line that surrounds the city. In the course of its construction, ramparts and moats of the Old Rus fortifications were used as the basis for the new structures. This defensive line was surrounded by urban development and lasted until the second half of the seventeenth century. Topographic analysis of defensive structures allowed to determine the role of each of the fortified parts of Chemihiv in the formation of city-wide space. Information on the development of the Fortress and the city, as well as the evolution of the formation of the street system was uncovered. The principles and stages of urban and suburban development in different periods of its existence are determined. If in the XIV-XVII centuries the development of the
city was spread only on the insignificant territory of the Upper Castle, partly Podol and Okólny Grad, then in the XVII century urban expansion took place at a faster pace, especially in the area of Forstadt. At first, the city grew towards water resources, essential for life and economic activity. This is the territory on the right bank and the left-bank terraces of Stryzhen, Kordivka and Podil. Land devoid of natural water resources (most of the Old Rusfortress), was not settled in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The city necropolis appeared later, in the western outskirts of the city, on high ground, and along the Lyubech road. The paper identifies the topographical features and boundaries of the "elite" and industrial districts of the city in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The total area developed in individual districts of the city is calculated. Thus, it was found out that from the second half of the seventeenth century Zastrizhennya becomes an "elie" part of Chemihiv. The home of Chemihiv military and spiritual elders. In particular, Polubotok’s and Chemihiv bishop’s Dunin-Borkovsky farmsteads reached several hectares. The centre of such estates was usually a brick honse surrounded by a number of wooden buildings. Churches were also built near or on the territory of such farmsteads. The study identifies the features and chronological gradation of the church 4
topography of Chemihiv and the location of necropolis in the late medieval and early modem periods. The increase in population had increased the needs of the community in religious centres. During the XIV-XVIII centuries only the Savior Transfiguration Cathedral remained functioning. Recent archaeological and architectural studies and newly discovered sources confirm the error of suggesting that some of the temples were destroyed during the Mongol invasion. At the end of the sixteenth century there were 7 brick-built religious buildings in Chemihiv, but only one - the Savior-Transfiguration Cathedral was active. The direct relationship from the Old Rus to the early modem church topography can be seen in the fact that the churches in the XVII century were often built on the site, or near to, its ancient predecessors. Since the middle of the eighteenth century, when the population of the city exceeded 2,5 thousand people, there was a need for a city necropolis. The new cemetery originated in the 1770's, alongside the old Rus one, along the Lubech road, two brick churches, Grigory and Voskresensk, were built on its territory. The topographic structure of city and suburban monastic complexes is analyzed and their role in the compilation of city-wide topography is determined. Boris and Gleb monastery was located on the territory of the fortress and from the XVII century its topography was included in the general topography of the fortified core of Chemihiv. The smallest of all out-of-town monasteries was Pyatnitskiy. It was directly behind the city’s fortifications, on
Pyatnitsky field. The monastery around the ancient Pyatnitskaya church was restored in the 1670's. By the middle of the XVIII century It played the role of the North-West marker of the extent of urban development. To the west of Tretyak was the Elitsky Monastery. A significant number of sources date it to the XIV - the beginning of the XVII century. However, the topography of the monastery at this time remains unknown. Active development of this complex began in the second half of the XVII century and lasted for almost all of the eighteenth century. The Trinity-Ilyinsky monastic complex consisted of two monasteries. Complex of Ilyinsky Monastery in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries included the Old Rus brick Illinskaya Church, a cave complex, a wooden printing houses and covered bridge over the ravine. The Trinity Monastic Ensemble began with the construction of the refectory of the Vvedensky Church in 1677. The Trinity Cathedral was laid in 1679 and completed only in 1695, In the 1740s began the expansion of the monastery's territory westwards. The territorial boundaries, chronology and the role of the nearest rural district in the formation of the historical topography of Chemihiv are outlined. These districts, in the period from XIV to XVTII century, had a different appearance and functional load, but had fully developed by the middle of the XVII century. 5 |
