This Siudy provioes the first substantial history and analysis ol the To~Day and To-Morrow series of ПО books, published by began Paul french and Trubner (and E. P Dutton in rhe USA) from 1923 to 1931. in -which writers chose a topic, described its present, ana predicted its utare. Contributors included J. b S. Haldane. Penrand PusselL Vernon l.ee. Pabert Craves. Vera Prittain. Sylvie Panrhursl. Hugh McDiarrnid. James Jeans. J. D. Pernok Winifred Hobby. Andre Mourois. and mony others. Use study combines a comprehensive account of its interest, history, ana range with a discussion of its key concerns, tropes, and influence. The argument focuses on science and technology, not only os the subject of many of the volumes, but olso as methodespecially through the paradigm, of the human sciencesopplieri to other disciplines: ond as a source of metaphors for representing order domains. It also includes chapters on war technology, cultural studies, ond literorure and the arts. This book aims to reinstate the series as a vital contribution to the writing of modernity, ond to reappraise modernismi relation to the future, establishing a body of progressive writing which moves beyond the discourses of post~Darwmian degeneration ond posbwar disenchantment, projecting human futures rather than mythic or classical paste. It shows how. as о coraroinated body of futurological writing, the series is also revealing about the nature and practices of modem futurology itself.
