Summary Maryla Hopfinger THE FOURTIES. Introduction Antisemitism, rife in Christian Europe and present also in the Polish tra dition, had its culmination in the Third Reich, when people of Jewish back ground were subjected to an extermination programme. The analysis of texts written in times of the Shoah reveals the figure of a Polish witness, detached from the shocking events and, above all, not threatened by the unconditional death sentence. The Jewish plight for survi val clashed with antisemític violence. Help from Poles did not become the norm; it remained rather rare. Those authors of texts who protested against the Nazi barbarity at the same time regurgitated the pre-war antisemític discourse. There has also emerged a critical diagnosis of the Polish witness to Shoah and of dangerous manifestations of antisemitism already after the war. Fixed cultural patterns turn out to be their common source. Ewa Koźmińska-Frejlak CLOSE BY... THE FIRST VOICES ABOUT THE SHOAH IN THE “REPTILIAN” PRESS AND IN THE POLISH CONSPIRACY PRESS In this text, I juxtapose the presentations of Jews and of the Shoah published in Nowy Kurier Warszawski, the daily with the highest print-run among the so-called “reptilian press”, published during the war by Germans in Polish, and in Biuletyn Informacyjny, an information and programme weekly of the Information and Propaganda Bureau of the Service for Poland’s VictoryUnion of Armed Struggle, later renamed the Home Army which, according to the popular opinion, stood out positively in comparison to other Polish underground titles in terms of how it
presented Jewish issues. I analyze utte rances concerning the closing of the Warsaw Ghetto in November 1940 and the so-called liquidation Grossaktion carried out there between 22 July and
21 September 1942.1 try to answer what content, and how, is presented by its authors, to indicate recurring motifs in these releases, to analyze the narrative strategies therein employed, including ellipses and silences, which I treat as one of the important ways of talking about the Shoah. Departing from the assumption that, despite numerous differences, the editors of both “repti lian” and conspiracy press functioned within the same linguistic universe, I attempt to reconstruct the broadly defined system of socially approved values within which they operated and which delimited the boundaries of what could and what could not be said about Jews on their pages, given the message functions determined by the character of each of these publications. Wojciech Wilczyk A REPORTAGE ON THE GHETTO LIQUIDATION IN A PROPAGANDA TONE Liquidation of the Warsaw Ghetto - A Reportage by Antoni Szymanowski, is a propaganda brochure commissioned by the Information and Propaganda Bureau of the Warsaw District Home Army Headquarters. Szymanowski’s account was written a few months after the transportation of Warsaw Jews to the death camp in Treblinka, which started on 22 July 1942. The brochure was to present a compassionate attitude of Poles to the extermination of Jewish population, but it is rife with antisemitk stereotypes. In my text, I analyze the prejudice and attempt to anchor it in a broader context. The way in which Szymanowski depicted the situation of the Jewish population is compared to the photo reports of the Propaganda Kompanien der Wehrmacht and to amateur photographs taken
illegally by German soldiers in the ghetto, to the photos of Mieczysław Bil-Bilażewski, who collaborated with the occupant, or to pre-war reportages from “the Northern District”, written by Wanda Melcer. Anna Zawadzka NOT TO LIE AND NOT TO TELL THE TRUTH On the universalization of Shoah in the Polish literature and school textbooks from the ‘40s. In this text I try to show that, contrary to what the Polish anti-communist common sense may indicate, the genesis of contemporary Polish discourse about the Shoah can be traced back to the late ‘40s. This text is a proposal to critically revisit the classic Polish literature on the Shoah, which enjoys the status of a testimony, as well as history and sociology school textbooks of the period. At the same time, this text is a proposal to treat antisemitism as 292 SUMMARY
a historically shaped component ofthe Polish culture, present also in its highest registers and not, as now commonly held in Poland, as a conscious yet rarely shared view of individuals. Such an approach makes it possible to approach antisemitism as a cultural pattern subject to social reproductions, whose continuity and momentum are often stronger than political transformations. Maria Kann’s 1943 brochure entitled Before the Eyes of the World is a docu ment of the Polish underground state. Her text, representative of the Polish narrative dominant during WWíl, has not lost its sociocultural validity to this day. Kann’s work is a reaction to the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. The brochure explains to its readers what happened there. The analysis therein presented reconstructs its constitutive topoi and argumentative patterns, revealing its structure and mechanisms. They include, among others: the orientalization of Jews, the myth of Judeocommune; constructing the disjointedness of Polish and German antisemitism; removing Christianity as a doctrine and institution from the field of vision, constructing Jews as irrevocably doomed to death. Before the Eyes of the World is a confrontation of antisemitism with its con sequences. This confrontation consists in levelling the cognitive dissonance at the cost of reality and in favour of imaginations about reality. By way of discursive manoeuvres employed by Maria
Kann, the dominant narrative, shaken in its foundations, returns to balance. The analysis reveals the double stakes of the discursive operation. On the one hand, it aims to save the face of Poland and of Poles, and on the other-to uphold antisemitism as the load-bearing construction ofthe identity symbolic system of the dominant group. Katarzyna Chmielewska LIFE AS IF OR A SERIOUS DIAGNOSIS. The Polish witness to the Shoah. This text stresses the ongoing validity of Kazimierz Wyka’s diagnosis and analysis, the hidden meanings and content of Life as If Wyka’s approach still holds not only owing to the condition of Polish debate on guilt, but primarily because his voice brings a lot of new perspectives into the discussion on the figure of the Polish witness to the Shoah and on the Polish experience of the Shoah and of times after the occupation. The author juxtaposes Wyka’s SUMMARY 293
classic text with two seminal contemporary works: Marcin Zarembas The Great Fear. Poland 1944-1947. Popular Reaction to the Crisis (Krakow 2012) and Andrzej Leders An Over-Dreamed Revolution. Exercises in Historical Logic (Krakow 2014). This juxtaposition lays bare the determinants of the contemporary interpretations of the discussed period and proves the ori ginality, accuracy and vision of Wyka’s diagnosis. The author emphasizes the special status of Wyka’s story. In Life as If the narrative is spun around the “us” of the Polish community. Chmielewska refers to it as a polono-centric narrative, as Poland and the Polish society take centre stage in this work. The Shoah almost never comes up as a subject of separate reflection, but within the context of fundamental social, moral and cultural changes that occurred in the Polish society, which led to the emergence of a new type of speculative bourgeoisie. Wyka, however, underscored that the Shoah was a condition for these tectonic events that took place in the Polish society, and more precisely, taking over the property and the social role of Jews; replacing them. The Shoah is a key to understanding the genesis and the structure of the society after the war. Taking over the property and the place of Jews in society was of a structural nature; it was an en masse process and it was universally seen as a God sent, historical justice welcome by the broad masses. Thus, in Wyka’s approach, the Polish witness to the Shoah is its beneficiary. Helena Datner EVERYTHING WAS WRITTEN JUST AFTER THE WAR. Radical publicists and writers on
antisemitism The most complete portrayal of the situation of Jews, as well as of wartime and post-war antisemitism rooted in antisemític cultural patterns, in line with the findings of social sciences of the time, was presented by radical leftist publicists and writers in texts produced immediately after the war, in the years 1944-1946. This portrayal should not be identified with the discourse of the communist authorities, although they have some similar elements. Leftist publicists characterized antisemitism of the Second Polish Republic as a force that prepared the Polish society for the Shoah; they recognized the intelligentsia, that is the social elite, as the initiator of the antisemític discourse and actions, they described the attitude of the dominant majority toward the extermination of Jews during the war (hardly indifferent), post-war antisemitism and ways in which it was rationalized, the passivity of the elites in the face of the Holocaust and the absence of educational and pedagogical efforts, which boded ill for the future. This discourse, transgressive in respect of the dominant discourse about Polish help, which emerged during the war, deprived of state support, seems to have faded already around 1947.
