В. Асафьева. Summaries Bobrikov А. The Case of Herbert Read and his «А Concise History of Modern Painting» The article concentrates on the analysis of «А Concise History of Modem Painting» by Herbert Read in the context of the specific values of the English «gentlemanly» tradition. Radical ideas of
art during the twentieth century, according to Read, looked moderate, compromised and almost traditional. The change in the general picture of modernist evolution is the result of manipulations of various types: interpretations, proportional ratios, or mere omissions. Keywords: modernism, painting,

603). The selected letters of Asafjev (1932-1949) to A. N. Dmitriev, his talented student and
successor, are written into the 276
research text devoted to him and show the dinàmics of the brilliant musicians’ relationship. A. V. Ossovsky’s letters to A. N. Dmitriev, written in 1946-1948, the most complicated period in the history of the national musicology, marked by the Party’s documents on ideological work, - are being published with comments in the conclusion to the article. The Politicization of the Language and of the Criteria in West German Music Criticism after 1968 On the basis of selected record reviews published in West German magazines between 1969 and 1976, it is shown to which degree sociological terms were more or less arbitrarily used for compositions of classical-romantic canonic repertoire. By looking at German reviews of recordings by Herbert von Karajan, the author shows how a newleft criticism, often alien to music, influenced a change in performance aesthetics. The German criticism of the 1968 years was opposed to the alleged late-romantic sound as exemplified by Herbert von Karajan, who stood for a morally mean man, in contrast to whom the historically oriented performance practice was praised. Englin S. Regarding B. V. Asafiev’s Views of Antique Music Studies: a Note about the Translation of Aristoxenus «Rhythmics» In the article,
the document of B. V. Asafiev’s archive is considered in which the musicologist has mentioned Russian translation of «rhythmical fragments» by Aristoxenus. Soviet scientist notes some relationship between Aristoxenian Theory and Folk Music of nations of the USSR. The content of the document is analyzed in a context of B. V. Asafiev’s point of view he expressed on a research of the Music of Ancient Greece and Rome. 277

New Documents to the Ballet Studies The article examines the notes of Peter Gusev, artistic Director of the Kirov state academic Opera and ballet theatre. These notes, relating to the autumn of 1949, were missed by the researchers of Soviet ballet. The document was found in The Russian state archive of literature and art. Notes are Gusev’s remarks addressed to ballet dancers and made immediately after the performance. They are marked by a creative triumphs and failures, uneven enforcement, and successful entries, they do show how varied the performances were inserted or deleted a new choreography. These notes give additional touches to the work of the famous masters of the Leningrad ballet scene: Nonna Yastrebova, Boris Bregvadze, Vsevolod Ukhov, Yuri Grigorovich, etc. Keywords: ballet, Kirov ballet, Gusev Piotr, Bregvadze Boris, Grigorovich Yuiy. Gertsman E. Modus Volume as a Category of Musical Thought The article is dedicated to an analysis of one of the most important and constantly evolving categories of musical thought - modus volume. Unfortunately, musicology has never examined this category, on which depends many interpretations of the structure of musical material. In the present article the peculiarities of modem European modus volume are analysed and compared with its particularity in ancient and medieval musical civilisations. Documents to the History of European-American Dialogues of Post-War Musicology. Leo Schrade, Jacques Handschin and Armen Carapetyan The article presents some new (recently discovered) documents from the correspondence of Russian Swiss Jacques Handschin with his colleagues, Western musico- 278
logists. The study introduces the circle of Handschin’s American contacts and explores his collaboration with the American Institute of Musicology in Rome. Ernst Robert Curtius, Jacques Handschin and their Books of 1948 In 1948 Ernst Robert Curtius and Jacques Handschin (both born 1886) published the books that we today consider the impressive summae of their respective research. For them, however, working on these books meant the continuation and defense of their intellectual lives during the Nazi period. In five steps, the author reconstructs the lines of thought that informed these works. Also included are the author’s outline of the true nature of the relationship between Jacques Handschin and Heinrich Besseler. number of dissertations. This article deals with the works associated primarily with S. V. Rakhmaninov; these are the works of K. A. Kuznetsov and M. V. Brazhnikov. Rakhmaninov provided material and spiritual support to Russia during 1942-1943. This article presents previous unseen material,

Danko Larisa is Professor, Doctor of Arts, N. A. RimskyKorsakov Saint Petersburg State Conservatory Rectorate’s Academic Counsellor, an Honoured Arts’ Scientist, a member of Saint-Petersburg Composers’ Union, a member of the Russian Federation Theatre Union. Elste Martin was Research Curator at the Staatliches In stitut für Musikforschung, Berlin. He studied musicology and mass communication in Cologne, London, and Berlin (West) and wrote his doctoral thesis, supervised by Carl Dahlhaus, about the recordings of Bach’s Art of Fugue. His concern is the relationship of music and media, namely in the areas of discology and discography, organology, and performance practice. Elste has published some 230 scho larly articles and more than 500 record reviews. In addition, he published and edited various monographs the latest of which is devoted to the work of Curt Sachs: «Vom Sam meln, Klassifizieren und Interpretieren. Die zerstörte Viel falt des Curt Sachs» (2017). His book on Wanda Landowska titled «Die Dame mit dem Cembalo» (2010) has been enthu siastically received by critics. Among his monographs is his widely acclaimed «Meilensteine der Bach-Interpretation 1750-2000» (2000), which won the «ARSC Award for Excel lence». He was Editorial Advisor for the 2nd edition of «Die Musik in Geschichte und Gegenwart» and acted from 2000 to 2008 as President of the German Record Critics’ Award. Olga is ballet critic and ballet historian, PhD in art histoiy, senior researcher at the Russian Institute for History of the Arts. Gertsman Evgenij is doctor of musicology, a leading researcher at the Russian Institute for the History of the Arts in St. Petersburg. His field of research is the musical study of antiquity, themusicalstudy of the Byzantine period. Kniazeva Jeanna is a leading researcher at the Russian Institute for the History of the Arts. the history of academic musicology, the history of musical life at the beginning of the twentieth century, organ music in the concert life of St. Petersburg in the 1910s. Mayer Franz Michael is Professor of Musicology at the Free University Berlin. His primary areas of research relate to the theory of the musical elements, the history of melody, music in the nineteenth century, and the relation between music and literature. Works in progress are articles on the relation between Marcel Proust and George Enescu, and on Hermann Lotze’s aesthetics of music. Mikhailov Andrei holds a doctorate in history and is cur rently a researcher at the Research Institute (for military history) at the Military Academy of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces. He is the author of several books on First World War history. Seregina Nataly is a leading researcher at the Russian Insti tute for the History of the Arts.
