Bell’s second book on ritual, already a classic in the field, Ritual: Perspectives and Dimensions, offers a practical introduction to ritual and its study, A significant contribution to our understanding of this ubiquitous human phenomenon, this book considerably advances Bell’s earlier and influential Ritual Theory, Ritual Practice. Instead of approaching ritual as a clear-cut and timeless object of scrutiny, Bell focuses on how a variety of definitions and understandings of ritual have emerged and changed over time. Bell develops the position that ritual activity appears to us today as a complex social medium, a cultural construction of tradition, exigency and self-expressions that is capable of playing a wide variety of roles and communicating a rich density of meanings. Now with a new foreword by Reza Azlan, Bell’s work is a must-read for understanding the key debates that have shaped our interest in ritual.
