Crondall (Hampshire, Great Britain); In the Numismatic Chronicle, 1844, is a circumstantial account by C.E. Lefroy of his discovery in 1828 of the largest hoard of Merovingian and Anglo-Saxon gold tremisses or "shillings" to have been recorded from the British Isles. Twenty-five coins are certainly of Continental origin. The earliest is a Lombard copy in the name of the Byzantine emperor Phocas (602 - 610):
