Dowry. The institution of d. (proix) has been a significant feature of marriage within the Hellenic world from antiquity until well into the 20th century as a material marker of both socio-economic status and interfamilial alliance; and, while the abolition of the dowry system was part of a relatively recent parcel of legal reforms relating to marriage and the family in Greece (Family Law Act 1983), there is evidence to suggest that the practice persists, in rural areas at least:
