SUMMARY The Image of Byzantine Emperors in Evagrius Scholasticus’s Ecclesiastical History The basic aim of this dissertation is to reconstruct the image of Byzantine emperors found in Evagrius Scholastic’s Ecclesiastical History, written at the end of the sixth century in Antioch, that is, to delineate his understanding of the emperors governing in the period from the Ephesus Council up to 5 90: Theodose II, Marcián, Leo I, Zeno, Anastasius, Justin I, Justinian, Tiberius and Maurice. Those rulers may be differentiated in many respects, for instance, their character, importance, and the availability of the sources about them. With this dissertation, I analyze this image in a broad historical and literary context, pointing out the similarities and differences between Evagrius’ book and the descriptions of emperors found in earlier works belonging to the literary genre of ecclesiastica! history, as well as in other historiographic works of late antiquity. I compare Evagrius’ account to the sources, found thanks to the use of the digitized resource of Greek texts contained in Thesaurus Linguae Grecae (version E). I thereby identify the sources of Evagrius’ Ecclesiastical History that were previously unknown, and also to detect literary and ideological models that he uses. The method ofwork used here was much different from traditional approaches, of course - given the possibility for much greater speed and breadth of the analyses. If wording appeared in the text o íEcclesiastical History, whether it differed in my opinion from the typical style of Evagrius or whether it looked
322 The Image of Byzantine Emperors in Evagrius Scholasticus’s Ecclesiastical History like gnomic or idiomatic formulations, I checked whether the other authors had used these or similar expressions before. Thanks to developments in information technology this can be done over all ages from Homer to the fifteenth century. փփփ The first part of the dissertation is devoted to reconstruct the life of Evagrius Scholasticus and the theological, cultural and social context of the work our Author ֊ especially those elements that had an impact on his evaluation of emperors, the intellectual climate in which he wrote, as well as his worldview. Evagrius Scholasticus, was born probably around 536 or 537, during the reign of Justinian, in the city of Epiphany in Syria Secunda, in the decurions family. The region he came from was certainly Chalcedonian. At the age of about twenty, Evagrius began his law studies, probably in Constantinople. It allowed him to acquire knowledge of the capital. After 3 69/ 5 70 he became a counselor of Gregory, the Patriarch of Antioch. He was awarded for his historical and literary works with the Tiberian honorary title of the quaestor and the title of the prefect by Maurice. He died not before the year 593/594. When it comes to his worldview, Evagrius was a neochalcedonian, with an irenist attitude towards monophysites. He was notably attached to the Roman tradition; was an ardent Roman patriot hostile to the barbarians; and felt bound to the Greek Antioch. And he shared very few traces of connections with the Syrian language and culture. It is worth
adding that he presented the attitudes characteristic of the decadent class of decurions to which he belonged. His way of thinking reflected the cultural code of the Hellenic tradition. To present the literary context, I analyzed the documents used by Evagrius, who had access to official archives - above all the archive of the Antioch Patriarchate, and then the Greek Ecclesiastical Histories, classicist works (among the most important, Priscus of Pannium and Procopius are worth mentioning), Chronicles (especially Chronicle of John Malalas), hagiographie works, and finally panegyrics and lampoons. At the end of the first part, I presented a reflection on the more important authors who influenced the ideas of Evagrius on the ideal ruler, from Plato, Philostratus (especially in his Vita Apolloni), Eusebius of Caesarea (not only the Ecclesiastical History but also Life of Constantine and The Praise of Constatine) and other authors of greek Ecclesiastical Histories, and finally Synesius of Cyrene.
The Image ofByzantine Emperors in Evagrius Scholasticus’s Fxclesiastical History 32.3 *** In the second, fundamental part of the study, I analyzed the image of all emperors depicted in Evagrius’ Ecclesiastical History in chronological order. That part of the dissertation is organized in such a way that each chapter of it is devoted to the image of one of the emperors. Conducting an analysis of the image of individual emperors described in the work ofEvagrius, I used a list of typical features ofemperors appearing in the The First Christian Histories of G.F. Chesnut, extended with certain features specific to the analyzed book. So I begun the analysis with the description of the manner in which a given emperor was presented before coming to power and what prodigies were to precede his choice. The next section is devoted to the character (virtues and vices) of the emperor. Next, I described his actions and their consequences: relations with family members, wars, financial issues, erected buildings, attitude of the emperor towards the dissenters (heathen, and in some cases Jews), to orthodoxy and heresy, the treatment of councils, the tendency to use force against the representatives of the Church, relation with saints, clergy and bishops and, finally, to the elementary defeats that occurred during his reign. In individual cases, we also consider issues specific to only one ruler, if they significantly affect his image, such as the problem of the legitimacy of Marcians rule or the sense of the adoption of the name of Constantine - by Tiberius. Theodosius II appears in the
description of Evagrius as a pious ruler, though not ideal. Evagrius’ focus is on the religious policy of the monarch (especially the problems of the Council of Ephesus), and he devotes little space to secular issues. Though he is a lawyer, Evagrius does not even mention the Theodosian code. Mardan - the monarch in the time of the Council of Chalcedon - is the ideal ruler, who possesses almost all the qualities of a good sovereign. Evagrius praises Mardan by quoting prodigia, which are typical for classical historiography. He defends the emperor’s unsavory policy against the Vandals robbing Rome. When building a panegyric description of the emperor, he also uses the patterns drawn from Synezius, but also from pagan Flavius Filostratos’ Vita Apollonit. The manner ofpresenting Mardan puts Evagrius among the definitely Chalcedonian authors. The image of the next monarch, Leon, is not very clear. Apart from the positively depicted image of the sovereign in matters concerning Church problems, the Author does not say much about him. The reason for this arose from the fact that although Leon was a Chalcedonian like Evagrius, many aspects of his politics (like elevation of the Isaurians to power, defeat in the war against the Vandals) had to meet Evagrius’ disapproval.
324 The Image of Byzantine Emperors in Evagrius Scholasticus s Ecclesiastical History The description of Zeno constructed by Evagrius is of ambivalent character. As a continuator of the classical tradition, Evagrius assesses him very critically as a barbarian, as well as, above all, a bad ruler with a tyrannical character. Evagrius’ point of view in matters of Zenos secular politics is similar to that of the secular classicizing authors like Malchos or John Lydos. In religious matters, on the other hand, these evaluations are positive or neutral. Even Henotikon appears successful - one more proof of Evagrius’ irenist approach to monophysitism. Evagrius’ position on Anastasius is generally positive. However, while we can see a certain proportion in economic matters, as the enthusiasm for abolishing chrysargyron is counterbalanced by the reluctance to introduce chrysoteleia, in religious matters in the case of this monophysite emperor, we can see not so much the balance as the lack of internal logic of the emperor s image. Evagrius tries to present the emperor as a peaceful ruler seeking a compromise on the issues of the monophysite controversy, quite contrary to the actual state that Evagrius himself describes. The reason for this is probably the fact that Anastasius won the barbarians of the Isaurians and the economic development of Antioch in his time, or the victory over Vitahan, which was evoked by Evagrius not as a defender of faith but as a barbarian. Thus, affairs of the state supersede religious affairs. Regardingjustin I, Evagrius demonstrates indifference.
Evagrius’ attitude to the ruler who is a symbol of Chaicedonism is a good example of the fact that the religious motif was only one of the factors in the overall assessment of the ruler for Evagrius. Justinian is the worst ruler rated by Evagrius (he is the only one sent to hell after death). Evagrius is aware of the contradictions in the character and politics of the monarch resulting from the descriptions he quoted. He is aware of the good sides of the rule of the great emperor, expressing this in his assessment of imperial investments, which are wonderful, but they are not decent, because they are built from the means of wicked acquisition. In conclusion, the source of an overall negative assessment ofJustinian’s policy was also the fall of Antioch in Justinian times, as well as the imperial decree on Aphthartodocetism against which the Antiochian Patriarch Anastasius appeared. Among the sovereigns discussed by Evagrius, Justin II occupies a position similar to that of Zenon and Justinian, that which distinguishes Justin II from Zenon andjustinian is that he expressed remorse at the end ofhis life and repented for his fault - and that he appointed Tiberius - one of the rulers most perceived by Evagrius, on his successor. The character ofJustin II is painted by Evagrius in a similar range of colors, which is the character of Zeno - it is almost a classic Platonic type of a tyrannical character. It is worth noting that the generally negative assessment of the emperor does not change the positive assessment of
The Image of Byzantine Emperors in Evagrius Scholasticus’s Ecclesiastical History 121 his religious policy. The reason for Evagrius’ reluctance with respect to Justin II could also be his frugal fiscal policy and the conflict between the emperor and the Antiochian patriarch Anastasius. Perhaps an additional reason was the desire to display by contrast the achievements of Tiberius and Maurice. In characterizing the rule of Tiberius, Evagrius is silent about his religious policy - accepted by monophysites, while emphasizing the personal qualities of the emperor, as well as military successes. The whole description of the monarch’s reign seems to serve first of all to proclaim the glory of his successor - Maurice. Tiberius himself in this relation to the next emperor plays a role like that of Constantius Chlorus to Constantine the Great in Ecclesiastical History of Eusebius - the times of his rule are the golden age’s herald. In the last part of Evagrius’ Ecclesiastical History dealing with the description of the deeds of Maurice, the church problems disappear. Instead, our Author shows the figure of the ideal ruler and his politics, especially wars ending in successes. It is worth noting that there is a parallelism between the final part of the Evagrius’ and Eusebius’ Ecclesiastical Histories. After describing the great persecutions, Eusebius presents the victory of Constantine and bringing order to the state. Evagrius, on the other hand, shows the fall of the state for Justinian and Justin II in order to emphasize the importance of the rule of Maurice. The description of the
fight on the Persian front is not only a description of struggles with an opponent, but a description of the struggle in defense of Christianity. So Maurice is a new Constantine. փփփ The scheme used by Evagrius to describe the rulers in their basic features can be found in Plato’s “Republic”. Probably, however, Evagrius did not directly use the work of the Athenian philosopher, but followed works of both Christian and non-Christian authors, who in the clear majority were under the influence of Platonic thought, such as Eusebius, Synesius, and Filostratos. The figures of the emperors oscillate, as in the “Republic”, between two extreme patterns: the ideal monarch and his opponent - the tyrant. Evagrius uses the Platonic analogy widely used in late antiquity between the system of the state and the order prevailing in the human soul. The ideal master, panaristos, is the one in whose soul the royal regime prevails. He can control others because he controls himself. Such a disposition allows him to become for his subjects
З 2 6 The Image of Byzantine Emperors in Evagrius Scholasticus s Ecclesiastical History agalma ton areton - the model of virtues: Evagrius clearly refers here to the Platonic agalmata that are the patterns of behavior for ordinary mortals. On the other hand, in the soul of a tyrant - also outlined very much like the tyrant of Plato’s “State”, there is an ochlocracy of passions, that enslave the wicked ruler. Because of this slavery, he falls into states of spirit unworthy of the ruler: excessive fearfulness (like Zeno), loss of senses (like Justin II), or even descent to the level of animal behavior (like Justinian). The ideal emperors certainly include Marcian, Tiberius and Maurice. To them all, Evagrius devotes special parts of the work maintained in a panegyric tone. Then, in order, one should list the rulers who have certain disadvantages, but are described positively: that is Theodosius II and Anastasius. To them, Evagrius has various reservations, be it religious or political in nature, but ultimately evaluates them favorably, which he expresses as deserving of going to heaven. Another group of rulers are emperors in relation to whom Evagrius is indifferent and it is difficult to say whether he judges them as good or bad: it is Leo I and Justin I. The author writes rather little about them. Finally, we have tyrants whose posthumous fate is not evolved by Evagrius: Zeno and Justin II (in the case of the latter he even writes about his conversion). And at the end - it is necessary to name a tyrant who dies in sin and is condemned - that is Justinian. Elowever, the
motives for evaluating particular rulers are extremely complex and are the result of many factors. They depend on the sources that the author used, on personal sympathies and antipathies connected with the fact that the author belonged to the class of decurions, on Antiochean and Roman patriotism, on family experiences, and on the author’s close cooperation with the emperor Mauritius, whom he presents almost as a New Constantine. Evagrius was also influenced by the fact that he belonged to the Chalcedon camp, which was opposed to monophysitism. This factor, however, proves to be less important in Evagrius’ evaluation of emperors than many scholars have thought.
