Mažosios Lietuvos etnografiniai kaimai 351 Ethnographic Villages in Lithuania Minor Summary The southeast shore of the Baltic Sea has long been home for a variety of old Baltic tribes. The stretch from the Neman to the lower reaches of the Vistula was settled down by the tribes of the Old Prussians, the Curonians, the Skalvians etc. In 1230, the Teutonic Order began to attack this region, conquering and colonizing the territory. Until the final victory at the Battle of Grunwald in 1410 (also known as the Battle of Tannenberg), this invasion was successfully slowed down by the military resistance of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. In 1525, the war-torn Teutonic Order was dissolved, and in its former terri tory the secular Duchy of Prussian with the State Lutheran Church was established. The northern part of this territory had relatively a small number of colonists from the West, therefore from the year 1422 the indigenous Balts and newcomers from the Grand Duchy of Lithuania began to settle there. Thus, at the lower reaches of the Neman and the Pregola Lithuania Minor (or Prussian Lithuania) was formed, which saved the Lithuanian language and Baltic traditions for several centuries. There, in 1547, the first Lithuanian book was printed; the Lithuanian language was used in churches and schools. The region developed a unique version of Lithuanian culture, which was significantly touched by the cultural influences of the North-West Europe. The ethnic Baltic lands separated into two state entities, namely, Lithuania Minor and Lithuania Major, the further cultural development of
which can be referred to as automatic. After the unification of Germany in 1871, the German Empire launched germanisation of ethnic minorities and in the margins of the state. This process also affected the northern part of East Prussia East, known as Lithuania Minor. After World War I, the northern margin of East Prussia, the so-called Memel Area, was separated from Germany. During the period of 1923-1939, the Memel Area was under the subordination of the Republic of Lithuania. In March 1939, it was occupied by Nazi Germany. In 1944, when the Soviet army was marching throughout Lithuania, indigenes of the Memel Area (mostly Balts) were evacuated to the West. Those who stayed in the Area and those who returned to it became a part of the Soviet occupational zone and suffered repressions of the totalitarian regime. This ethnic cleansing was the measure used to implement the annexation of the Area and to destroy the heritage of the traditional culture. Indigenes of the Area were killed, expelled to Siberia and forced to leave their homeland. After Stalin s death, according to the treaties between the Soviets and Germans signed in 1957, indigenes of the Area were permitted of their leave (mostly to East Germany). The former Lithuania Minor lost almost all its indigenes along with unique cultural traditions. One of the results of the dissolution of East Prussia was the separation of the former Lithuania Minor. The northern part of the Memel Area went to soviet Lithuania, while the largest part - the Königsberg Area - went to Russia and the southern part to Poland. Since 1945 the
extermination of traditional villages were begun ֊ the old buildings were demoüshed, cemeteries devastated, ancient monuments destroy ed during the above mentioned process. In the Soviet Union, Lithuania Minor and its tragic fate was a taboo; the remained heritage was ignored and forbidden. Lithuania Minor was recalled during Lithuanian National Awaking and in 1990 when Lithuania regained its independence. Lithuania Minor is the homeland for Martynas Purvinas, Ph. D., the author of this book. He exami ned the remains of destroyed Lithuania Minor without the consent of the authorities of the day during the years of the Soviet regime. At the earliest opportunity he published about 2.000 articles and several books on ethnographic villages in Lithuania Minor and on its unique architecture. There are 39 articles on history and lifestyle of the villages in Lithuania Minor published in this book. The data for them was collected in German archives and during the empirical examination of the remains of villages. The villages described were iocated in different climatic conditions, therefore the lifestyle of tribes also were different. The so-called grasslanders lived at the bottoms of the major rivers; their main oc cupations were haymaking and shepherding. Fishermen who were occupied in traditional fishing with sailing-boats lived by the rivers, by the Baltic Sea and in the Curonian Spit. In the 19th century, when wetlands were drained, wetlanders settled there and cultivated potatoes and vegetables. The rest part of the area in question was settled by farmers who were engaged
in agriculture. Because of the specific historical development, unique settlements were founded there, which were more influenced by Baltic traditions and less by administrative regulations. Wooden buildings predo minated in the area for a long period of time; wooden décor was also widespread. There were fictile buildings as well. In the end of the 19th century brick buildings began to spread. In the past houses were roofed in reeds and straws, later in ceramic tiles. The nature of villages and their buildings also depended on their location, population activities etc. The book describes 39 unique villages which retained more traditional features and which covered the sketch from the original border of the area in the east to the Baltic Sea in the west. These villages are considered as future tourism spots for those who want to acknowledge the unique heritage of the Lithuania Minor and the northern part of East Prussia, i.e. villages of various sizes, manor houses. This is the first time in Lithuania when the detailed descriptions of the historic development of these villages and their particularity are published.

Pirmą kartą Lietuvoje išsamiai aprašoma šio specifinio etnokultūrinio regiono gausių kai mų raida, remiantis įvairiais istoriniais šaltiniais bei ilgamečiais dr. Martyno Purvino tyrimais.
