Summary ’ve been thinking about writing and publishing these memories for a long time. The professional experience of my work in journalism I intended to summarize in a book, in this autobiographical book, which will serve the public for many early and late events, important to Kosovo. I started journalistic activities for more than four decades. It always was a sacrifice, a courage, an effort. It was a kind of war. The fight for the truth, the freedom and independence of my country; for democracy, emancipation and development of Kosovo. The book you have in your hands represents the efforts, the survival and the constant sacrifice of my people. Therefore its title is natural “The Book of War”. In the book, in some stages, I wrote about my own challenges and challenges of my people. The first phase begins in 1974 and continues until 1999. Within this phase, I presented my journalistic experience after the second half of the 1980s, during this period when I as a journalist, along with my colleague Muhamet Mjeku and others, we managed to break the clichés of totalitarian censorship Pristina Television. The reader of this book will have the opportunity to read how we managed to broadcast through a special show, nationalist and chauvinistic speeches at the gathering of Serb communists ід Fushë Kosově (in April 1987), the full address of the former leader of the Communist Party of Serbia, Slobodan Milosevic, to publicly denounce Serbian politics over Kosovo. The book wih also explain in detail how in the hve TV show “Aktualitet” (Actuality), on the TVP screen, with the then
Kosovo political leaders, at the time when the queshons of viewers were censored, I did it through my imaginary constructed queshons, on behalf of imaginary viewers to present the public’s interest in the then political developments. By the end of the eighties I didn’t allow my report on political assessment of Provincial Committee Alliance of Communists of Kosovo to be censored for all-inclusive demonstration in Pristina in November in 1988 against Serbia’s policy in Kosovo. SUMMARY My journalistic experience in this book was also presented through the public denunciation of the censorship of the Serbian editor-in-chief of Pristina Television, Boško Drobnjak, regarding his arbitrary efforts to ignore information coming from Albanian gatherings throughout Kosovo to surpress the then autonomy of Kosovo. “The Book of War” also introduces other details from the well-known hunger strike of Trepča miners in February 1989 against the suppression of Kosovo’s autonomy. Authentic stories are also presented that the Serbian chairman of the Kosovo Assembly in 1990 did not allow at the Assembly meeting to present the request of Albanian delegates to advance the constitutional position of Kosovo, whereby Serbian police cut off the power in the hall, while the TVP team, part of which I was, did not come out of the hall, but turned on the generators of television and thus enabled the direct broadcasting of the Assembly meeting. In this context, I would also point out my reporting from the meeting of the head of the League of Communists of Kosovo, Rrahman Morina, with citizens of Keqekollë. Despite his presence at the director’s office of Pristina Television, I did not allow him to censor the report from that gathering, where Morina used some vulgar and compromising. Despite the punishments and suspensions from Kosovo’s then political leadership and TV Pristina for my brave journalistic work I never gave up, but I continued to inform the public about events in Kosovo. On 2 July, 1990, when the Albanian delegates of the Kosovo Assembly, in the presence of
Serbian Police forces, adopted the Constitutional Declaration for Kosovo as equal unit at the then Federation, I was part of the TYP team of journalists. Despite the violent termination by Serbian police of broadcasting conversations with delegates and citizens in the center of Pristina, I was not afraid and I reported on this important event. On the day Serbia applied violent measures in the media and TVP in my office I was confronted with the commanders from Belgrade and refused to work on their dictates and, together with other colleagues we resisted with disobedience and this has resulted in the closure of the Albanian TVP program. The book introduces the continuity of my engagement in journalism even after the closure of the TV Pristina. My work continues by publishing articles in the newspaper “Dielli” in Zagreb, in periodical press in Pristina, and in 1990 in the founding and publishing the newspaper “Demokracia” 756
SUMMARY in Switzerland, which was the basis for the publication of the newspaper “Rilindja” in Switzerland, after being banned in Pristina, and then to my engagement in radio broadcast for Kosovo, the five-minute edition of Albanian language of Radio Croatia in Zagreb. It was very difficult to report at that time when the war in Slovenia and Croatia broke out in 1991 and all telephone and other connections with Zagreb were interrupted. However, thanks to my dedication, through the support of my friends, in Pristina my colleague and friend Muharrem Ramabaja (director of “Zeri” magazine) and in Arau (Switzerland), Sylejman Beqa (owner of “Dukagjini AG” company), I broadcasted the news for Radio Croatia regarding the developments in Kosovo and they were broadcasted every evening. In November I went to Zagreb and there I edited and read Albanian news on Radio Croatia. Here, in war circumstances, when Serbian military planes bombed Zagreb and Croatian presidency, I gained a precious experience, in order to broadcast the news from the studio in the basement of Radio Croatia. This was an important experience for me, which served me to carry out journalistic responsibility during the war in Kosovo. Another phase of my professional activity was that of conducting the first TV shows for Albanian Television regarding the functioning of legitimate Albanian institutions in Kosovo, especially for the functioning of schools, University of Pristina, Central Financing Council, municipal councils and programs for our diaspora in Europe, as well as some documentaries about Albanian exodus in
Europe and the world. All this work with many sacrifices and many responsibilities was made without obtaining official permission from the Serbian occupation authorities. One of the main phases of my activity presented in this book is the era of the student resistance movement and the armed struggle of KLA (Kosovo Liberation Army), the era of 1997-1999. Although I was not officially part of the Kosovo team in the satellite TV program of Albania, which was the only television window of information of Kosovo Albanians, as well as all obstacles that came not only from a part of Kosovo’s leadership in Pristina, together with my colleague and friend Qani Mehmedi, we managed to achieve to have a special awareness raising program aimed at open public call for mass participation in student and general public demonstations scheduled for 1 October 1997. Regardless of the political leadership of the main political subject of Kosovo Albanian who hesitated to support the demonstration of the student movement, our show succeeded in sensitizing the public for massive outbreaks in these demonstrations and this broke the 757
SUMMARY cliches that prevailed in the satellite program of Albanian Television on active resistance to freedom and independence. Thanks to my dedication and the commitment of my fellow Abaz Zeka and the support of Migjen Kelmendi, even my co-workers from the Central Financing Council and the Emergency Council, who provided me with transportation from Pristina through rural roads of the villages to avoid the Serbian police and army controls, with my TV crew I have also penetrated into the war zones controlled by Kosovo Liberation Army. Having the clear intention and being determined to contribute to the process of liberation of Kosovo, I have to realize that, despite the divergences and deep divisions between a part of the political scene in Pristina, the Kosovo Government in exile, on the one hand, on the other side of the General Headquarter of the Kosovo Liberation Army, to secure the support for my TV crew in war zones and to present on television an authentic view of Kosovo Liberation Army, its war, on the satellite program of Albanian Television and the world media. Through sincere and sacrifical work, for the purpose of fair informing the public about the war of KLA, I managed to get the support of Minister of Information of the Government in Exile, the Central Financing Council and the General Staff of the KLA. The first public appearance of the KLA spokesman, Jakup Krasniqi, whose filming and broadcasting was entrusted to me and my team by the KLA General Staff, other shooting for the KLA war throughout Kosovo, the survival of the civilian population in the war
zones, was carried out by my team, from cameraman Abaz Zeka, with a small digital camera, which was given to me by Xhafer Shatri, Minister of Information of the Government of Kosovo, led by Prime Minister Bujar Bukoshi. And thanks to my communication and my professional approach, with my colleague Asilan Bajrami and with Minister Xhafer Shatri and with the support of the leaders of the KLA HQ and during communication with Prime Minister Bujar Bukoshi, despite the disagreements between the KLA HQ and Kosovo Government in exile, we managed to broadcast for the first time the first TV show in Albania’s satellite TV program in Tirana, the first TV show devoted to Kosovo Liberation Army, as well as a TV reportage on the free territories of Kosovo. Thus, with my team I continued to inform the public with ah military and political development in Kosovo, especially about the drama of the civilian population in the war zones, with the mass expulsion of Kosovo Albanians after the start of NATO air bombardment over Serbian military targets, the arrival of volunteers from European countries and United States of America, the ultimate battles for the liberation of Kosovo, etc. 758
SUMMARY It should also be emphasized here the support and sacrifice of Dobërçani brothers, Ergyn and Ekran, who have endangered the family and have installed all the chronicles of the war zones in their house, so that we could professionally finish our fieldwork. Another phase of my work presented in the book is that of informing the public on political development and other issues in the free Kosovo since 10 June 1999, for the return of refugees to Kosovo after Serbia’s capitulation and entry of NATO’s ground forces in Kosovo, for the functioning of the Interim Government of Kosovo, for visits of world leaders in new Kosovo, for the start of the functioning of educational, health and other institutios in Kosovo, for the reconstruction and development of Kosovo. The other phase of my professional activity was the engagement on the basis of public competition for journalists at the Radio and Television of Kosovo. Even here, because of my experience of reporting in war circumstances, I reported from the war in the Preshevo Valley after the UÇPMB appearance and the war in Macedonia after the appearance of the National Liberation Army. Here I’d like to highlight the chronicles and reportages from Dobrosin, Konçul and Lluçan, as well as reporting on the drama of the civilian population in Sllupçan, Kumanovo. All this work was with great dangers, but it was important that I managed to accomplish my national mission successfully. Even later, when indictments were allegedly filed for war crimes by the Kosovo Liberation Army commanders in the International Criminal Tribunal in the
Hague, I was obliged to report on the court proceedings in the case of Limaj and Haradinaj. Even here, I had a difficult task, despite the serious war crimes charges, I managed professionally to present the truth about liberation war and Kosovo. A special chapter of my work after the war, which is presented in the book, is my experience of realizing more than 100 documentary films, mainly about the key figures of the Glorious War of the Kosovo Liberation Army, UÇPMB, the National Liberation Army, but also about other figures who worked and sacrificed much for freedom, independence and national unity. Among the films I made, the one that I did with the most devotion was “Symbol of Freedom” (“Simboli і lirise”), dedicated to the life and patriotic work of the colossus, symbol of our national movement for national liberation, Adem Demaçi, then the documentary “There Are the Roots of Freedom” (“Aty і ka rrënjët liria”), dedicated to the heroic deeds of KLA in Prekaz on 5th, 6th and 7th March 1998, the documentary “The Fortress of Resistance” dedicated to the heroic deeds of KLA in Dukagjin on 24th 759
SUMMARY March 1998 and the heroic Haradinaj family, the documentary dedicated to the national heroes Agim Çelaj, Tahir Sinani, Ismet Jasharit“Kumanova”, Bekim Berishës — Abeja and Bedri Shala, Zahir Pajaziti, Edmond Hoxha and Hakif Zejnullahu, Luan Haradinaj, Rexhep Maia and Nuhi Berisha, documentary series “Years of Great Tum” (“Vitet e kthesës së madhe”), a fílm about demonstrations of 1968, the documentary film “The Decisive Journey for Independence” (“Rrugëtimi vendimiar për pavarēsi”), a documentary film dedicated to the drama of civilian population during the Kosovo war, titled “Survival” (“Mbijetesa”) and many other television projects. “The Book of War” concludes with reporting from long-awaited event, from the one for which I had worked and sacrificed throughout my professional career - the proclamation of the independent and sovereign state of Kosovo on 17 February 2008. For me, it was very emotional to report from the same building of the Assembly of Kosovo, where I had reported on July 2,1990, on the occassion of the proclamation of the Constitutional Declaration for the advancement of the constitutional position of Kosovo. Cooperation with Jakup Krasniqi, who was the chairmain of Assembly, and my insistence on reporting, made me the only journalist who directly reports from the extraordinary meeting of the Kosovo Assembly Presidency on the day of the declaration of independence of the Republic of Kosovo. Talks with some of those who worked and endangered their lives for this historic day, among them with former Commander “Çeliku” (Fatmir Limaj), with former
well-known political prisoner Bajram Košumi and other deputies, were exciting to me, because with personalities I cooperated a lot in the war period for the freedom of Kosovo. At the end of this introduction I would like to thank the publisher Berat Dakaj, book editors, Haqif Mulliqi and Muhamet Mavraj, reviewer Bajramm Košumi for suggestions and professional advice for the enhancement of book content.
