SUMMARY 1. The pursuit of the testimony of Albanian literary art, disclosing its universalities, must be a cautious adventure when it is attempted in the sphere of lyric poetry: firstly, because this has been the dominant form of Albanian literary art, spanning five centuries of existence in written form, and secondly, because this literary form has developed throughout these centuries in communication with other European literatures. With its internal currents and foreign influences, Albani an lyric poetry has produced its own original nodes: eruptions of emotion in De Rada, Naim Frashëri; invocations of identity in Mjedja, Fishta; and metaphysical meditations in Bogdani, Naim Frashë ri, and Lasgush Poradeci. The scholar explores the relations of these nodes, as forms ąnd norms, pressing his adventure further into metaphysical poetry, which has been less often written and whose reading is more difficult. 2. The Albanian cultural legacy as distilled in written literature expo ses elements of difference: three religious confessions: Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, Muslim; two dialects: Geg and Tosk; and a permanent state of cultural communication between the West and the East. These upheavals have been manifested more significantly in the art of poetry, in lyric poetry but naturally enough also in other literary forms which, beyond their emotional experience of the world, reflect texts involving the recognition and confrontation of contrasting worlds. The written literary culture of the Albanians is strongly connected to the integrity of the Latin world: first and fore-
370 Sābri Hamiti most, through the Latin alphabet, and also through Marin Barleti’s Scanderbeg, a written masterpiece in Latin. 3. The Albanian literature of identity is created through the historicalnational hero, Gjergj Kastrioti (a figure beyond legend and folk-tale) with the pro-historic literature of Barleti (which also employs myth and fancy). Scanderbeg is a literary hero of Humanism. And from beginning to end the Albanian language is the basic stuff of identity and the spiritual substance of literature. Reflections or retrospective fantasies of the pre-Albanian Antiquity, generally populated with imaginary figures, give way to the historical perception of national identity that is disclosed in the era of Gjergj Kastrioti - Scanderbeg. Consequently, the Albanian literature of identity has for the past five centuries been bound up with the pattern of Gjergj Kastrioti, repre sented in literary forms stretching from lyric to epic poetry, from drama to the novel. 4. The heroic deeds of Gjergj Kastrioti, as a sublime standard of resist ance, have produced the tragic challenge of a confrontation between the ideal and the reality of survival within the Albanian cultural and civic world: with freedom as a precondition of identity. Hence, we have the migration of the substance of the nation, the migration of knowledge, a country that is reduced while its diaspora is enlarged. The diaspora becomes a resource of knowledge, a source of survival. This cultural condition resulted in the civic drama of identity and assimilation. The Albanian identity and its literature require
conti nual regeneration 5. The consequences have been a reversion to genuine sources to estab lish an original literature based on the oral literature of the ethnos, resulting in the rise of written literature dwelling on formal and expre ssive refractions of authentic Albanian, drawing also on patterns of oral communication: Fishta, Çabej. On the other hand, this has also led to the rise of an Albanian literature in foreign languages, emplo ying universal forms comparable to other literatures and cultures: Barleti, Bogdani, De Rada, Naim Frashëri, Sami Frashëri, and Konica. This is why there is a lively discussion, sometimes emotional and sometimes conceptual, about the need for communication between these waves of Albanian culture and literature, in modem times too.
Testamenti 371 It is not heretical to assert that an alternative history of Albanian literature composed in other languages may be contemplated. On the contrary, it is a sign of a maturing awareness that appreciates the values of this body of literature and culture, because literature and art have been for the Albanians a way of conserving moral, civic and philosophical teachings to this day. Finally yet importantly, this pur suit puts into inter-relation Genesis, Structure, Meaning, which in this scholarly and creative adventure have characterized the moder nity of Albanian literature as a sublimation of spirituality. 6. This phenomenon was crowned in the 20th century Albanian litera ture with the intertwining of figurative and conceptual language, with the power of meditation, with the production of more complex forms: from the classical poetry of Mjedja to the modem poetry of Lasgush Poradeci; from the classical drama of Fishta’s Juda Makabé [Judas Maccabeus] to the anti-drama: of Pashku’s Gof; from the sentimental novel such as Stërmilli s Sikur ťisha djalë [Ifi Were a Boy] to the modem novel, such as Kadare’s Kronike në gur [Chro nicle in Stone], The awareness of literary interpretation is subject to the tests of typological systematizations and philosophy of literature, a literary world which conceives and articulates from within a crow ning theory of art. Ultimately, a carefbl and mature adventure by the scholar may continue through a novel that draws on the language of poetry: Pashku’s Oh; or documentary prose which rivals it with the utopia of auto-reflection:
Pllumi’s Rrno vetëm për me tregue [Live to Tell the Tale], The issue is not about generations but about pheno mena evident in Albanian literature, in parallel communication with other contemporary literatures. 7. Literature, as both art and knowledge, is taught across the schools, from elementary schools to the university, not only as an emanation of beauty and tmth about a nation, but also as an endless field unfol ding man’s creative spirit, as a field of freedom. Recognized as a value, literature is taught institutionally, with an understanding that this knowledge gradually and patiently lays down the moral and cultural models of a country, of a world. Therefore, it represents everywhere the fundamentals of identity of a culture in progress. This complex mission is accomplished by inventing new methods of
372 Sābri Hamiti recognizing values and their manifestation for the sensibilities of diverse generations, so that one is not drowned in clichés, so that one is not bound by duty. 8. One can rescue oneself from resorting to schemata by constantly reading and engaging with literary creators, engaging in a multitude of individual readings. This calls to our mind the intimate reading of Lasgush Poradeci’s poetry by Mitrush Kuteli; the productive reading of Pjetër Bogdani’s oeuvre by Ibrahim Rugova; the conceptualist reading of Jeronim de Rada by Arshi Papa, and other readings too. 9. I embarked upon and persisted in the adventure of reading and engaging with Albanian literature during the last three decades of the 20th century, disclosing forms and absorbing meanings of Albanian literature. I published these individual readings and their traces in these books: Variante [Variants, 1974], Teksti і dramatizuar [Dra matized Text, 1978], Arti і leximit [The Art of Reading, 1983], Vetëdija letrare [Literary Awareness, 1989], Letra shqipe [Albanian Letters, 1996], under the joint title of Sprovapër një Poetike [Essays on a Poetics], as essays, with a title in the indefinite form of Albani an. In the first two decades of the 21st century, exploring general literary phenomena of Albanian literature in the form of theoretical laws aimed at a general system, I produced the following books: Bioletra [Bio-Letters, 2000], Tematologjia ([Thematology, 2005], Albanizma [Albanianisms, 2009], Literary Utopia [Utopia, 2013] and Testa menti [Testament, 2018], now in the definite Albanian form.
This last title completes a series of five books with the overall title Poeti ka shqipe [Albanian Poetics]. Or else, perhaps a Philosophy of Literature. Who knows? P.S. 10. On a final note, where does one acquire the license to be selfreferential? From the dowry of written readings of the knots tied by the author and untied by the reader: a) of elementary and complex forms, of works and masterpieces, of styles and literary formations; b) of authors, from Marin Barleti and Gjon Buzuku to contemporary
