Through Death to Freedom. Walking through East Bohemia in search for the World War memorials and the architecture of the First Czechoslovak Republic. A hundred years have passed since the end of World War I and the founding of the Czechoslovak Republic, which lasted only twenty years. Nevertheless, in the urbanized as well as rural landscape of East Bohemia, a number of monuments have been preserved, representing the material memory of the region of that time, a part of the nation’s cultural memory, which must be preserved for the next generations and popularized while extending the historical awareness thereof for the years to come. In the genre of toponymie guide, the book offers a cultural-historical introduction to the memory culture associated with the memorials of the fallen soldiers of World War I in the territoiy of East Bohemia and the iconographie interpretation of their symbolism. It also informs about the literary reflection of the war theme and the partici pation of the Czech soldiers - legionaries in building the state” in belles-lettres. Apart from small-sized memorials and monuments (with some of them, such as the works of sculptor-legionnaire František Bílek from Podhorni Újezd, attention is focused also on the memorial’s rela tion to the artist s personal history and the experience at the front line), the first part of the publication also commemorates the circumstances of the creation and 269
construction of large monuments, such as the Masaryk Tower of Independence, built between 1926 and 1938 on a hill above Hořice. The second part of the publication is devoted to commemorating the selected public and other buildings erected during the First Czechoslovak Republic in the East Bohemian region and contributing to the formation of the high building culture of the region of the inter-war era. In addition to information about the historical circumstances of the artifact’s creation and its iconographie and authorial contexts, each of the more than a hundred of the represented entries contains the GPS location. In the territory of East Bohemia, there are almost one thousand war-themed memorial and monumental reali zations. The criterion for the final selection of memorials and monuments represented in the publication was re markable sculptural work, architectural design and overall artistic quality. The results of field research were used to form two major areas, the memorial realizations of which the book deals with. The first one is the eastern part of the Pardubice Region, a strip of territory stretching from the Ústeckoorlicko area towards Pardubice, the other area covers Jičínsko and Hořicko. The former districts of Náchod and Svitavy, inhabited between the world wars by a large German ethnic group, are noticeably poorer in memorials commemorating the fallen from the front lines of the First World War. This fact is undoubtedly related to the historical events associated with the Second World War, that is the escape of the Czechs from Inner Sudeten land in 1938
and the later post-war displacement of the Germans, which did not create favorable conditions for 270
the preservation of local memorials. Artistically and compositionally remarkable monuments can be found in the territories of Jičínsko and Podkrkonoší, where there are many sculptors associated with the professional sculpture-stonemasonry school in Hořice founded in 1884. The symbolic dimension of the represented memorials and monuments is usually made up of several layers. The first layer is the easiest-to-read content that generally depicts war suffering or its consequences. Most often, through a wounded soldier, a dying naked male or female figure (often with children) vainly waiting for her husband to return from the war. Less often, sculptural rhetoric is more specific when a soldier of a particular fighting party can be distinguished in the sculpted figure. The most frequently represented soldier is a Czechoslovak soldier - a legionnaire symbolizing the determined struggle for the freedom of the nation and its independence. In many cases, the ethos of war suffering is directly linked to the reference to T. G. Masaryk, President-Liberator, who is portrayed or embossed in the composition of the monu ment. The authors of war memorials often used symbolic animal renditions or their heraldic stylization. The Czech state is traditionally represented by the figure of a lion (following the Baroque symbolism of a crowned lion as an attribute of Bohemia); the Slavic element of the Czech statehood is embodied by a falcon. Both animal symbolic figures are used mainly in confrontation with the motif of the Austrian two-headed eagle, which is usually depic ted as subjugated,
beaten to death or dead. Particular memorials thus directly reference to the break-up of Austria-Hungary, the freedom won and the very process 271
of emancipation of the Czech nation that culminated in the formation of the Czechoslovak state in October 1918. In the building the state era between the world wars, wishing to give new contours to the centuries-old con ventional image of the East Bohemian towns, due to the massive construction activity, the appearance of the East Bohemian countryside and the local centers of Hradec Králové and Pardubice changed dramatically. The favor able conditions for the invasion of modern architecture in the region was ensured by enlightened investors and progressive mayors, among whom was the longstanding Mayor of Hradec Králové JUDr. František Ulrich, a remark able personality with an unusual range of cultural know ledge and visionary enthusiasm. Centered on public, administrative, school and cultural buildings, the selection of forty-two buildings highlights the quality of East Bo hemian architecture of the inter-war era. Over the course of two decades, we can find great examples of a number of artistic movements. Firstly, the so-called national style associated with the search for the official art style of the young republic after 1918, whose softly modeled facades combining the motifs of cylinder, circle, and its sectors flooded the capital and regions in the first half of the 1920s. Interesting examples of this particular style can be found not only in Červený Kostelec, Pardubice (the atmospheric building of the crematorium by architect Pavel Janák, reminiscent of a set piece of a gingerbread house in spite of its commemoration service function], Polička, Hradec Králové
(layout of Masaryk Square and surrounding rental houses], but also in the interiors of the chateau in Nové Město nad Metují. After the mid-19 2 Os, 272
the ethos of the national style was replaced by the tech nologically advanced stylistic tendencies of the interwar architectural avant-garde, which, using steel and rein forced concrete structures to lighten the structures with large windows, prodding the young generation of archi tects into radical transformation of architectural creation and the perception of its social role. In the 1920s, a number of related architectural styles were born in the European field: purism showing pure volumes and areas accentuated only by alternating sun light and changing shadows, austere constructivism with spectacular ramped staircases, and functionalism ap proaching buildings as white plaster thin-walled boxes pierced by uninterrupted strips of windows. Hradec Králové, the so-called Salon of the Republic , holds a pe culiar position among rural centers of interwar Czecho slovak architecture. For the city situated at the confluence of the rivers Elbe and Orlice, architect Josef Gočár devel oped a good regulation plan harmoniously connecting old buildings at the historic hill with a modern city built as a collective work of several dozen project architects on the right bank of the Elbe River, and supplemented the whole conception with dense stripes of greenery creating pleasant relaxation zones for city residents. These excellent buildings include the compound of pri mary schools and a gymnasium, inspired by the Dutch architecture of unplastered bricks and reform ideas of lessons taught in the open air and in richly illuminated classrooms, and the original compound of the Ambrose
Choir of the Czechoslovak Hussite Church, with its con finedness and austere aesthetics reminiscent of medieval 273
Cistercian monasteries. Two large squares in Hradec, Ulrich and Masaryk, became a celebration of democracy and the new times. Still, first-rate functionalist buildings in the region were created by a wide range of other ar chitects: members of the Rejchl family and Oldřich Liska in Hradec Králové, Karel Řepa and František Potůček in Pardubice, Čeněk Mužík in Choceň, Antonín Ausobský in Litomyšl and Bohuslav Šmíd in Polička. The varied palette of stylistic movements used in the local architecture in cluded modern classism and regionalism, too. The former tried to revive the ancient tradition and equip public and cultural buildings in the service of the republic with pathos and monumentality. Its successful examples in clude town theaters in Chrudim and Hronov designed by architect Jindřich Freiwald. The latter was inspired by the vernacular building culture. The book thus allows its readers to travel through the East Bohemian region to a very distant-in-time - yet still relevant - Czechoslovakia while inviting them to visit and personally become acquainted with places forever co nnected with its history, culture and modern national memory. If the publication happens to make the reader think about how many of our ancestors sacrificed their lives for the freedom of the nation and the ideals of de mocracy, and what these concepts involve and what is important to preserve and fulfill the meaning in the today’s ever-changing world, its ambition will be fulfilled. r.
