The councillors marveled that Dudley 'or any other having experience of the warres' could think that the French could lay siege to the town 'at this tyme of the year especially in a cuntrey so devasted and voyd of all victualls and forrage'. The English also adopted these tactics in Scotland in the 1540s, with Henry VIII's ambassadors informing Charles V in April 1545 that the French could not invade England through Scotland because 'the cuntrey to be so wasted, spoyled, and heryed, and to be in such miserable penurye, that it wer not likely they woold or could do eny thing that waye' and that likewise the French king 'could do no good this yere for to asseege Boulloyn ... for lack of victailes and fourraige and other thinges necessary'. The English achieved a high level of destruction in the Boulonnais, which they maintained throughout 1545"... |
