Zusammenfassung: | "The practice of slavery has been common across a variety of cultures around the globe and throughout history. Despite the multiplicity of slavery's manifestations, many scholars have used a simple binary to categorize slave-holding groups as either 'genuine slave societies' or 'societies with slaves'. This dichotomy, as originally proposed by ancient historian Moses Finley, assumes that there were just five 'genuine slave societies' in all of human history: ancient Greece and Rome, and the colonial Caribbean, Brazil, and the American South. This book interrogates this bedrock of comparative slave studies and tests its worth. Assembling contributions from top specialists, it demonstrates that the catalogue of five must be expanded and that the model may need to be replaced with a more flexible system that emphasizes the notion of intensification. The issue is approached as a question, allowing for debate between the seventeen contributors about how best to conceptualize the comparative study of human bondage." -- Publisher's description |

Brooks "The practice of slavery has been common across a variety of cultures around the globe and throughout history. The issue is approached as a question, allowing for debate between the seventeen contributors about how best to conceptualize the comparative study of human bondage." -- Publisher's description Geschichte gnd rswk-swf Soziologie (DE-588)4077624-4 gnd rswk-swf Gesellschaft (DE-588)4020588-5 gnd rswk-swf Sklaverei (DE-588)4055260-3 gnd rswk-swf Slavery / History Slavery / Social aspects Slavery History (DE-588)4143413-4 Aufsatzsammlung gnd-content Römische Sozialgeschichte (DE-2581)TH000006934 gbd Sklaverei, römisch (DE-2581)TH000007228 gbd Griechische Sozialgeschichte (DE-2581)TH000006930 gbd Sklaverei (DE-2581)TH000007224 gbd Sklaverei, byzantinisch (DE-2581)TH000007229 gbd Sklaverei, griechisch (DE-2581)TH000007227 gbd Gesellschaft (DE-588)4020588-5 s Sklaverei (DE-588)4055260-3 s Soziologie (DE-588)4077624-4 s Geschichte z DE-604 Lenski, Noel Emmanuel 1965- (DE-588)135761204 edt Cameron, Catherine M. 1948- (DE-588)105641832X edt ebook version 9781108633208 http://www.sehepunkte.de/2020/01/34004.html rezensiert in: sehepunkte 20 (2020), Nr. 1 Rezension Digitalisierung BSB München - ADAM Catalogue Enrichment application/pdf http://bvbr.bib-bvb.de:8991/F?func=service&doc_library=BVB01&local_base=BVB01&doc_number=030897092&sequence=000001&line_number=0001&func_code=DB_RECORDS&service_type=MEDIA Inhaltsverzeichnis |
