Stravinsky in the Americas explores the “pre-
Craft period of Igor Stravinsky s life, from
when he first landed on American shores
in 1925 to the end of World War II in
1945- Through a rich archival trove of
ephemera, correspondence, pho-
tographs, and other documents,
eminent musicologist H. Colin
SI im examines the twenty-year
period that began with Stravin-
sky as a radical European art-
music composer and ended
with him as a popular figure in
American culture. This collec-
tion traces Stravinsky s rise to
fame—catapulted in large part
by h is collaborations with Hol-
lywood and Disney and marked
by his extra-marital affairs, his
grappling with feelings of anti-
Semitism, and his encounters with
contemporary musicians as the mu-
sic industry was emerging and tak-
ing shape in midcentury America.
Slim s lively narrative records the com-
poser s larger-than-life persona through
a close look at his transatlantic tours and
domestic excursions, where Stravinsky s
personal and professional life collided in
often-dramatic ways.
H. COLIN SLIM is Professor Emeritus of
Music at the University of California, Irvine,
where he served as the first Chair of the De-
partment of Music. He is a former President of
the American Musicological Society (1989-1990)
and a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts
and Sciences. His two-volume A Gift of Mad-
rigals and Motets was awarded the Otto Kin-
keldey Award. He met Igor Stravinsky in 1952
and again in 1966, events that inspired a lifelong
interest in the composer s persona! and profes-
sional life. His collection of Stravinsky ephem-
era, manuscripts, and documents was donated
to the University of British Columbia, which
published an annotated catalog of the collec-
tion in 2002.

This collection traces Stravinsky's rise to fame...catapulted in large part by his collaborations with Hollywood and Disney and marked by his extra-marital affairs, his grappling with feelings of anti-Semitism, and his encounters with contemporary musicians as the music industry was emerging and taking shape in midcentury America. Slim's lively narrative records the composer's larger-than-life persona through a close look at his transatlantic tours and domestic excursions, where Stravinsky's personal and professional life collided in often dramatic ways"...Provided by publisher</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="600" ind1="1" ind2="4"><subfield code="a">Stravinsky, Igor</subfield><subfield code="d">1882-1971</subfield><subfield code="x">Travel</subfield><subfield code="z">United States</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="600" ind1="1" ind2="4"><subfield code="a">Stravinsky, Igor</subfield><subfield code="d">1882-1971</subfield><subfield code="x">Criticism and interpretation</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="600" ind1="1" ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Stravinsky, Igor</subfield><subfield code="d">1882-1971</subfield><subfield code="0">(DE-588)118642545</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield><subfield code="9">rswk-swf</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="648" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Geschichte 1925-1945</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield><subfield code="9">rswk-swf</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="4"><subfield code="a">Music</subfield><subfield code="z">United States</subfield><subfield code="y">20th century</subfield><subfield code="x">History and criticism</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">USA</subfield><subfield code="0">(DE-588)4078704-7</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield><subfield code="9">rswk-swf</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="655" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="0">(DE-588)4006804-3</subfield><subfield code="a">Biografie</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd-content</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="689" ind1="0" ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Stravinsky, Igor</subfield><subfield code="d">1882-1971</subfield><subfield code="0">(DE-588)118642545</subfield><subfield code="D">p</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="689" ind1="0" ind2="1"><subfield code="a">USA</subfield><subfield code="0">(DE-588)4078704-7</subfield><subfield code="D">g</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="689" ind1="0" ind2="2"><subfield code="a">Geschichte 1925-1945</subfield><subfield code="A">z</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="689" ind1="0" ind2=" "><subfield code="5">DE-604</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="700" ind1="1" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Taruskin, Richard</subfield><subfield code="d">1945-2022</subfield><subfield code="0">(DE-588)10379753X</subfield><subfield code="4">wpr</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="776" ind1="0" ind2="8"><subfield code="i">Erscheint auch als</subfield><subfield code="n">Online-Ausgabe, ebk.</subfield><subfield code="a">Slim, H. Through a rich archival trove of ephemera, correspondence, photographs, and other documents, eminent musicologist H. Colin Slim examines the twenty-year period which began with Stravinsky as a radical European art-music composer and ended with him as a popular figure in American culture.
