It consists of two parts: Hirt's private correspondence and his official writings. Both parts complement each other and are connected by the indexes. The edition serves to make the sources accessible as well as to provide basic research in art history, cultural history and the history of science, and is intended as a contribution to the re-evaluation of an influential art expert and cultural politician, a pioneer of architectural history and archaeology, and the initiator and organiser of the first Prussian art museum in Berlin. The private letter corpus consists of more than 230 surviving private letters as well as approximately 370 indexed letters from the years 1787 to 1837, which are being edited in their overall context for the first time. The collection of letters is scattered in over 40 archives and libraries. There is as yet no indication of the whereabouts of Hirt's estate. The corpus of official writings consists of more than 470 individual documents from the period 1796 to 1837, which can be assigned to the respective official areas of the Royal Academy of Sciences, the Royal Academy of Arts, the Royal Building Academy and the Museum Commission. Most of them have been preserved in the Academy Archives and the Secret State Archives of Prussian Cultural Heritage.
