OF MUNICIPAL SYMBOLS OF THE RUSSIAN FEDERATION
The article raises issues related to the establishment of official municipal heraldry in the Russian
Federation. The role of the Union of Russian Heraldists is especially emphasised which works
in close contact with the Heraldic Council under the President of the Russian Federation to elabo-
rate the existing system of municipal symbols. In addition, the author pays special attention to the
enlightening role of the Union of Russian Heraldry in the dissemination of heraldic knowledge
at the municipal level.

of heraldry and their one hundred rallies held in different years in the cities of Russia, Ukraine and
Belarus.

ON THE ORIGIN OF THE TRIDENT OF SAINT VLADIMIR
In 2015 a silver heraldic pendant was published which had been found near the settlement
of Malaya Kireevka of Vinnytsa Oblast in the Ukraine. On the side CA’ of the pendant there
is a picture of a trident, the central tooth of which is the image of a bird of prey with a cross on
its head. The side ‘W is smooth.
Analogues to the bird on the pendant are images of a bird’s head on imitations of dirhams.
Currently, researchers agree that these coins were minted by Princess Olga in the late 940s — early
950s. The same bird is known in graffiti on the Samanid dirham of 952—960 and on the heraldic
pendant of the middle — third quarter of the tenth century from excavations in Pskov.
The trident depicted on the pendant is the result of combining two different symbols in one
image — the family bident of the Rurik dynasty and the T ird with the cross’. Obviously, the owner
of the trident was heir to both the owner of the bident and the owner of the ‘bird’. The most likely
owner of the trident was Vladimir — the bastard of Sviatoslav Igorevich. Inclusion into Vladimir’s
coat of arms of the family symbol of Olga became, most likely, a public demonstration of the trans-
fer of the rights to the paternal possessions of the grandmother to the young prince.

HOW THE EMBLEM OF THE SIBERIAN KINGDOM WAS FORMED
IN THE SIXTEENTH - SEVENTEENTH CENTURIES
The article deals with the formation of the heraldic emblem of the Siberian kingdom reflected
in the Hitulyarnik’ (Book of Titles) in 1672 and used in the years that followed. The complex
structure of the Siberian coat of arms makes us assume its composite character. For the first time
the Siberian emblem is known on the seal of Ivan the Terrible in the late 1570s, it features an im-
age of an arrow. Later, in the first half of the seventeenth century, the Siberian ‘seal’ included
images of two sables standing at the cedar tree. I believe that there is no genetic continuity be-
tween this emblem and the earlier one. In the second half of the seventeenth century two variants
of the Siberian arms are known. One of them (two sables and an arrow between them) is similar
to the image on the Tobolsk seal and is almost identical to the variant of the coat of arms with
a cedar tree. The second, more complex, represents the further development of the Siberian he-
raldic theme; it was compiled from the emblems of the seals of the three cities that headed the
Siberian administrative territories of that time - Tobolsk, Tomsk and Yeniseisk. Thus, the result-
ing Siberian coat of arms was created by the purely heraldic principle of impaling coats of arms,
the time of its appearance should be attributed to 1672.

The article concerns a source stored in the Manuscript Department of the Library of the
Academy of Sciences, a notebook by Robert Areskin, Peter Fs doctor. One of the pages contains
three wax seals, two of which have a heraldic image.
The author of the article defines the owner of the heraldic seals as Patrick Murray, the second
Baronet Murray from Ochtertire. The article attempts to answer the question about the purpose
of placing these seals in the notebook.

HERALDIC ARTEFACTS IN THE ARCHAEOLOGICAL MATERIAL
OF EARLY ST PETERSBURG
The article presents an archaeological research of the St Petersburg Fund carried out in the
State Hermitage collection from the point of view of heraldic marks one can find on the exhibits.
They include replicated coats of arms on stamps — depiction of state arms on bricks produced
at government-owned factories; individual, city and state arms on Dutch pipes and individual find-
ings of the early arms of the Petersburg nobility.

cophagus of Anastasia Lanskaya, located to the right of the Smaller Cathedral, on the non-church
part of the necropolis of the Donskoy Monastery. Also the evolution of the design of the heraldry
of the Lanskoy family in the last quarter of the eighteenth century and the role of the coat of arms
on the sarcophagus by Anastasia Lanskaya are traced.

TO THE 200TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE NOBILITY COAT
OF ARMS OF THE GOLOVNIN FAMILY
In 2016 200 years have passed since the date of the Highest approval of the coat of arms
of the Golovnin noble family, the descendants of Ignatius. The article presents archival informa-
tion on the history of the coat of arms, the biographical data of petitioners to the Department
of Heraldry titular counsellor Fyodor Golovnin (the descendants of Bogdan) and midshipman
Dmitry Golovnin (the descendants of Ignatius), the importance of the contribution of Prince
Pyotr Dolgorukov, Vice Admiral Vasily Golovnin and his son Alexander Golovnin in the genealogy

of the Golovnin family, the Genealogical Table from 1370 to the nineteenth century and its exten-
sion to the present time made by Pyotr Golovnin, based on archival materials, a total of nineteen
generations with more than 500 names in the family tree.

SEALS WITH THE COATS OF ARMS OF COUNTS BOBRINSKY
AND SAMOILOV FROM THE COLLECTION OF THE NUMISMATICS
DEPARTMENT OF THE STATE HERMITAGE MUSEUM
The article is devoted to the seals held in the Numismatics Department that belonged
to the members of two families of counts: the Bobrinsky and Samoilov. They were received by the
Hermitage in 1938 within the collection of the former Armorial Museum and in 1941 within
the collection of Alexander Voitov (1893—1966).
One of the Bobrinsky seals belonged to Alexey Grigoryevich Bobrinsky (1762—1813) — the son
of Catherine II and Count Grigory Grigoryevich Orlov. The matrices of the other two seals be-
longing to representatives of the same family depict an approved version of the coat of arms
of Counts Bobrinsky.
A group of sphragistic artefacts (two seals, a wax seal and a wafer stamp) belonged to Countess
Sofia Bobrinskaya (1799—1866), born Countess Samoilova. The Department possesses five seals
and two wafer stamps owned by her father — Count Alexander Samoilov and her brothers — Grigory
and Nikolay Samoilov.
In addition to the seals, the collection of the Numismatics Department contains orders and
breastplates insignia belonging to the members of the Bobrinsky family, as well as three tokens
owned by the Minister of Railways, Lieutenant-General Vladimir Bobrinsky (1824—1898).

PURPLE GRASS
The article analyses the heraldic hatching in the practice of Russian heraldic artwork and histo-
riography of the eighteenth to early twentieth centuries.
Its origin, formation, influence of foreign systems on domestic one is discussed. The author
pays special attention to the designation of green and purple colours on black and white images.
The author clearly shows that in one of the basic questions of heraldry there is no unanimity, and
up to the twentieth century several conflicting systems could be used.

DATING OF A COAT OF ARMS AS A SOURCE PROBLEM
The article analyses the source studies of dating of coats of arms associated with their specific
existence in the form of an image and / or its description. The features vital for establishing a date
for different types of arms are discussed. The originality of the chronological dialogue between
the coat of arms and its bearer has been studied. It is concluded that the emblem exists in four
temporary systems: immatriculation, approval, use and existence as a concept.

ARMORLAL AS A DOCUMENT: A BIBLIOGRAPHICAL ASPECT
The article considers problems of defining and classifying armorials as one of the important
categories of heraldic sources. Until now, despite centuries of academic interest, there have not yet
been established generally accepted, non-contradictory approaches to the classification of armori-
als, the definition of an ‘armorial’ have not been confined. The analysis is carried out and contra-
dictions of existing classifications from the point of view of bibliology are revealed. For the first
time, it is proposed to apply a documentary approach to the development of the classification of
armorials, to consider an armorial from the point of view of a document. Such an approach will
make it possible to create a fundamentally new classification of armorials.

THE FIFTEENTH CENTURY IN THE HISTORY
OF EUROPEAN ARMORIALS
By the fifteenth century, armorials have become a stable tradition of genre. The sum of armori-
als in this century numbered more than 200. Many of them existed in several versions. In Europe
there were two main zones of making armorials: the armorials of the Burgundian school and the

armorials of the zone of the Holy Roman Empire and the adjoining countries. In the eyes of mod-
em historians many important events of the fifteenth century and what seemed important to their
contemporaries were not reflected in the armorials. In this period the number of arbitrary armori-
als also increased. Armorials of the Orders dominated among institutional armorials. In the fif-
teenth century a new type of armorials appeared — so-called educational armorials. Well-educated
heralds created short manuals — treaties about blazons. Armorials came to be full of the ideological
programs. The authorship of the armorials became more distinct, and the role of clergy decreased.
Because of the unique character of armorials, the invention of printing did not influence their
hand-written tradition in the fifteenth century.

behavior which was confrontational to the traditional society.

HERALDIC SYMBOLS OF THE CORONATION OF ELIZABETH TUDOR
The article is intended to demonstrate the adaptation of heraldic symbols in the context
of the coronation ceremony of Elizabeth Tudor. First of all* the continuity of heraldic royal
signs is traced, which were employed in the solemn ritual that created the coronation image of the
queen. The plot is examined on the example of three main stages of Elizabeth’s actions: the cer-
emonial action on the Thames, the dedication of candidates for the Order of the Bath, the festive
procession in London. Separately, the heraldic elements of the liturgy are noted on the example
of Elizabeth’s anointment. In conclusion, we discuss the use of the heraldic play alongside the
liturgy of the church space, reinforcing secular elements of the coronation of Elizabeth Tudor.

IN ST PETERSBURG (FATE OF CHARLES XU’S FINNISH DETACHMENTS)
This article tells about the ambiguous fate of some trophy banners from the times of the
Northern War, namely of the Finnish church parishes. Having begun their existence in St Petersburg
in the SS Peter and Paul Cathedral under Peter I, these insignia changed their location several times
until they found themselves in the State Hermitage Museum, transferred from the Antikvariat
company.

ON THE QUESTION OF THE 1883 REFORM OF BANNERS
The paper is devoted to one of the latest banner reforms in the Russian Empire — the reform
of 1883. Despite the fact that this reform is one of the most documented, it is currendy insuf-
ficiendy studied and there remain a number of issues requiring further research. One of the most
important issues which have not received due consideration is the place of the 1883 reform in
the political, social and cultural life of the country. The reform of 1883 dramatically changed the
appearance of the banners of the Russian imperial army: the banners of the so-called ^Prussian
model’ were replaced by new ones with pronounced traditional Russian motifs.

BREAST BADGES OF HIS HIGHNESS GRAND DUKE MIKHAIL PAVLOVICH’S
FIRST BATTERY OF THE LIFE GUARDS FIRST ARTILLERY BRIGADE
The First Battery of the Life Guards First Artillery Brigade led its history from the Bombardier
Company of the Preobrazhensky Regiment, therefore it was in a special position among the six
batteries of the brigade. Only the First Battery officers wore neck badges such as in the oldest
Preobrazhensky and Semenovsky guards regiments. The battery’s servicemen wore battery badges,
besides a brigade badge. Exemplary neck and breast badges and their watercolour drawings with
inscriptions about the Highest approval from the former Main Quartermaster Office’s storage are
of particular value in the museum collection.

ON THE PROJECTS OF THE BADGE AND TOKEN
OF THE LIFE GUARDS SAPPER BATTALION
The article deals with unpublished projects of the anniversary badge of the Life Guards Sapper
Battalion established in 1912. The author of the drawings is Georgy Solomonovich Gabaev (1877—
1956), a well-known military historian and archivist, a compiler of the history and creator of the
Museum of the Life Guards Sapper Battalion. In the archive of the museum some documents have
been revealed showing an attempt to establish, besides the badge, a token for officers leaving the
battalion: a draft of rules for obtaining and wearing a battalion token, protocols of general meetings
of officers, description of a golden token made by the company Ae. Kortman on order of Gabaev.

HERALDIC SYMBOLS OF REGIONS AND MUNICIPALITIES
OF THE ARCTIC ZONE OF THE RUSSIAN FEDERATION
The article is devoted to the modem heraldry of the regions that make up the Arctic zone of
the Russian Federation in accordance with Presidential Decree No. 296 of 2 May 2014. The sub-
ject of research is the symbolic means that the designers of the coats of arms use to express the
natural and climatic and historical features of these territories (representatives of the polar fauna,

ornaments from the culture of the indigenous peoples of the Far North, the motif of the Aurora
Borealis, etc.). The analysis of the material shows that the heraldry of the national regions of the
Arctic zone can be allocated to a separate group, which is characterised by symbols reflecting the
occupation of indigenous minorities of the North (reindeer husbandry, handicrafts), as well as
comprehension of selected symbols through a local folklore tradition.

ON THE QUESTION OF HERALDRY
IN THE RUSSIAN ORTHODOX CHURCH
Heraldry does exist in the Russian Church, but so far — in the form of scattered, rare prec-
edents, and by no means as a formally adopted system or as a stable tradition. It is fruitful where
the purely private demand of clerics and communities for means of visual identity meets with a
thoughtful attitude to the extra-heraldic church traditions. The article is intended to show why this
‘not well-groomed’ situation is at present more a blessing for heraldry in the Russian Church than
