SUMMARY
With the start of Nicholas I’s reign
(1825), Russia, previously dominated by
a single artistic style, which was classi-
cism, followed Europe’s lead in develop-
ing a romantic passion for the arts of dif-
ferent countries and peoples of the past.
In pursuit of a new grand style, archi-
tects, artists and designers embarked
on studies into the heritage of bygone
eras to draw inspiration from. As a result
a multitude of various styles came into
being, conventionally called ‘Neo-Grec’,
‘Renaissance Revival’, ‘Rococo’, ‘Gothic
Revival’, 'Moorish Revival’, ‘Neo-Pom-
peian’ etc. Russian style, which was
taking shape separately, was embedded
in a national policy enshrined in the fa-
mous motto: ‘Orthodoxy, Autocracy and
Nationality’.
Against a backdrop of a rapid
growth of urban population with its social
division and industrial expansion, Russia
followed Europe’s example (from 1829)
and started holding regular artistic and
industrial exhibitions featuring the best
enterprises not just in St Petersburg and
Moscow, but also in other Russian cities.
Fierce competition helped to cultivate
taste and creative skills, fostering the
development of a rich variety of ‘arts and
crafts’. In this sense the period dubbed
‘historicism’ (1820s - 1890s) marked
the pinnacle of professionalism in art.
Gaining an insight into the legacy of the
past, artists not only relied on precise
measurements to copy the artwork of
their remote ancestors, but also tried to
surpass them by inventing new technolo-
gies and materials to meet the needs of
the nineteenth century.
This dynamic and exciting process
acquired its most unique identity with-
in Russian culture, which historically
lacked the Gothic or Renaissance styles
that lay at the foundation of Europe’s
first ‘neostyles’. It is hardly surprising
that many works were interpreted by
their Russian makers in a much more
romantic way than their Western pro-
totypes. A passion for the past, whose
living embodiment were ‘historical’ mas-
querades organised for the upper-class
society, reverberated through all the as-
pects of cultural life in Russia, in applied
art most of all.
Here the role of furniture as the core
element of physical space is of utter im-
portance. The diversity of constructions
and decorative techniques created in the
age of historicism cannot be described in
simple words. The names of some items
have long been outdated or applied to en-
tirely different objects. When reading the
works of famous writers of those times,
we can hardly guess that by mentioning
‘a bergère’ or a ‘Gambs armchair’ they
were immediately indicating the wealth,
taste and income of their characters.
Today a lot from the everyday life in
the nineteenth century seems to be cov-
ered by a veil of oblivion. The exhibition
aims to lift this veil in order to narrate and,
more importantly, showcase the setting
in which dramatic events described by
Leo Tolstoy, Fyodor Dostoevsky, Ivan Gon-
charov and Ivan Turgenev were unfolding.
The name of the exhibition, ‘Furniture for
a Body’s Every Whim’, is a quote from the
story Masquerade by Nikolay Pavlov, who
was well known to his contemporaries.
Words such as ‘whimsical’, ’quaint’ and
‘elegant’ that were in fashion during the
time of historicism were all applied to very
different concepts, which were unfailingly
special and sophisticated in nature.
In the case of interior decora-
tion ‘elegant’ instinctively meant close

to French novelties, which served as
a beacon for the whole of Europe. It is
for this reason that the State Hermitage
Museum takes most pride in its prints
showing various pieces of furniture,
which once came out regularly in Paris.
They derive from the salons of St Peters-
burg shops and furniture and wallpaper
workshops which bought them in order
to show them to their clients. By com-
paring these depictions with real pieces
from the museum’s holdings, it is pos-
sible not only to correctly identify their
names, as used in those times, but also
to appreciate the high quality of domes-
tic products that could rival imported
ones.
Of special value are the examples
of the original interiors of the Winter
Palace - these silent witnesses to the
life of the royal family throughout sever-
al decades. It is a known fact that the
interiors of the Imperial residence, de-
signed by leading masters, were seen
by contemporaries as a trendsetter and
the embodiment of the latest trends in
design and arts.
Furniture from the Winter Palace,
largely depicted in watercolours, is the
keynote of the exhibition’s every section
that deals with a specific style present in
the 1820s - 1890s.
There is no other museum that
would boast such a unique capacity to
showcase historicism as a major over-
arching stage in the life of Russian
furniture making. Apart from the items
produced for Imperial residences, after
the 1917 revolution the State Hermitage
Museum saw the arrival of pieces from
nationalised palaces, flats and man-
sions of St Petersburg residents, once
used by people of different walks of life.
All of the objects included in the exhibi-
tion illustrate the most typical features
of their time from both the artistic and
household perspective. Almost one third
is introduced to the academic communi-
ty for the first time ever.
The exhibition catalogue compris-
es two big conceptual articles giving
an account of the social and cultur-
al context in Russia, various forms of
furniture making and a wide range of
products. They are followed by themat-
ic sections organised in the following
way: an article concerned with a spe-
cific stylistic movement in the age of
historicism along with descriptions of
related prints and items. The author be-
lieves that the art of Russian furniture
making in the 1820s - 1890s is most
vividly represented by romantic con-
cepts eternalised in Neo-Grec, Nicholas
Empire, Neo-Pompeian, Neo-Etruscan,
Neo-Gothic, Neo-Renaissance, Second
and Third Rococo, Louis XVI, Russian
and Oriental Revival styles. |
