This book illuminates the answers to various major questions on African development related to international trade and finance. It explores the economic interaction between Africa and the now-developed countries (the West) in the past and China today, as well as the legacy of these interactions for Africa’s growth and poverty reduction effort today. In addition, it discusses the implication of this legacy for Africa’s future development, and considers whether lessons can be drawn from this experience in terms of the continent’s future development? By providing in-depth historical and economic analysis conducted in non-technical terms, the book represents a valuable resource for policy makers, researchers, and students, as well as international organizations that focus on African development. Alemayehu Geda is currently Professor of Macroeconomics and International Economics at the Department of Economics of Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia. He is also a Research Professor at the SOAS, University of London, where he served as Senior Lecture between 2003 und 2005. His areas of research interest include international trade, development finance, macroeconomics, poverty, and the political economy of conflict in an African context. He is the author of over 40 research journal articles and book chapters and five books on African economies. He has also worked for a number of international organizations and African governments, including those of Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda, Zambia, Sudan and South Africa. In addition, he has served as a macroeconomic expert for the African Union high-
level panel on the economic negotiations between North and South Sudan. 9781527526303 978-1-5275-2630-3 www.cambridgescholars.com Cover image courtesy of Pixabay, 2017 Cambridge Scholars Publishing
