Archbishop Makarios HI (1913-1977), dominated the politics of Cyprus and
exercised enormous influence on Greek politics. He assumed the leadership of
the Enosis movement from the late 1940s onward. The documentation of his
ecclesiastical, but especially his political legacy, can be found in his pronounce-
ment at different fora and to a variety of audiences. Following his death in 1977,
the Archbishop Makarios III Foundation collected, categorized, and published
the sermons, encyclicals, speeches, interviews, petitions, and memoranda in the

voluminous work entitled: Anavra Apxismokótiov Kvnpov Fy (Apanta Archi-
episkopou Kyprou Makariou III) Collective Works of Archbishop of Cyprus
Makarios HI, vols. 1—18 (Nicosia: Archbishop Makarios in Foundation, Janu-
ary 1991—2007). For the purposes of this book, the period covered and as far as
Makarios is concerned, starts in June 1948 and concludes in December 1954.
All of his pronouncements and written statements for that period have been pub-
lished in vol. 1 of Anavra ApxismoKÓTCov Kvnpov r, 1948—1954 (Apanta Archi-
episkopou Makariou IU, 1948—1954 henceforth referred to as Apanta;). As such,
the Makarios’ Apanta constitute an indispensable primary source with regard to
the Enosis movement. Makarios’ pronouncements and written statements which
had been utilized for the purposes of this book appear in chronological order
