SUMMARY
During my scientific activity, stretching over
50-years, mainly in magazines and especially in
19 volume publications, i have been treating
cultural, traditional and contemporary themes of the
Albanians outside the administrative borders. Such
were the Albanians in Macedonia, the Presheva
Valley (Serbia), in Bursa (Turkey), the Arvanites
(Greece), Arbëresh (Italy), Mandricë settlements
(Bulgaria) and Zara of Croatia.
Regarding this field, I even wrote about Albanians in
Montenegro, even though, not through special articles.
The data I used has been obtained through the
participation of their groups and folk ensembles in the
National Folk Festival of Gjirokastra, and other
typological festivals organized in different cities of
Albania, as well as in source festivals in Kosova and
Macedonia. I participated in those activities as a
researcher, member jury or chairman of the respective
juries. More specifically, I attended such a phenomenon
folkloric-art live in Kosova, Macedonia, Italy and

elsewhere but, I never did in Montenegro.
Driven by the opportunity of publicizing a new
volume titled, Ethnographic Horizons..., it became
a priority the inclusion of a special article on cultural
popular tradition of one of regions inhabited by
Albanians in Montenegro. It could be not only about
folk but, also can be in the atmosphere of other types
of popular culture. That’s why I travelled to
Montenegro in search of popular manifestations of
Albanians there. This exercise could be pre phrased
as:” Getting to know expedition” or “Cultural,
popular-artistic contemporary expedition”.
Albanians there are autochthonous on their own soil
and are settled on South - East of Montenegro (see
photo 1). There are about fifty thousand inhabitants
mounting to more than five percent of country’s
population. Cultural wise, obviously that the Albanians
in Montenegro are connected with Albania, Kosova
Macedonia and Presheva Valley (Serbia) simply
because they share the same language, national
flag, history, national anthem in another words part
of the same genetic tree.
They are the biggest non - sllav minority in
Montenegro. Serbo-Croatian is the official
language but, Albanian language is also officially
recognized. They speak North Albanian Geg
dialect. At the Podgorica University there is a

Pedagogy Branch in Albanian Language.
Based on historical documents, Plave-Guci region
was anexed by Montenegro at the Congress of Berlin
in 1878.
Through Albanian Prizren League of 1878,
Albanians opposed this decision in Hot and Grude
region as well. London Conference of Ambassadors
later on in 1913, gave Montenegro some other parts
of Albanian land such as: Gruda, half of Hoti, half of
Anamali on the shores of Lake of Shkodra. This made
Albanians the main ethnic group within Montenegro.
As time went by they were discriminated and
assimilated disguising their origin.
Albanians of Montenegro are the roots of Mother
land settled there in around one hundred villages
and towns. These places are named like: Plave,
Guci, Tuzi, Hoti (Highland), Rozhaja (see photo 2),
Kraja, Shestan, Anamal, Ulcin, Tivar (Bar).
My research journey lasted four intensive days.
I‘m conscious that time was in short supply but, i
happened to be surrounded by well wishers making
my job easy.
Day one I travelled by car via Tirana -
Monday Podgorica and then Podgorica -
August 8th, 2016 Plava. I left in a hurry and went
to Gucia (see photo 3) were I was
told that a traditional activity is taking place at the
village of Vuthaj titled: “Welcome to Albanian Alps”
(see photo 4). After my search I spend the night in Plava.

Tuesday
August 9th, 2016
I began the day talking to
different people like: Gani
Kuka, Tahir Gjonbalaj.
Fadil Ferri.R o s h o
Rexhepovig ect. I did learn a lot from them about
popular manifestations in Plava and Gucia region.
In Plava ( see photo 5), impressive was the visit paid
to “Tower Museum of RexhepAgaf’ (see photo From
there, I traveled to town of Tuzi ( photo 7) and i start
working with Shtjefen Ivezaj and Albert Camaj.
Day three At town of Tuzi, I meet
Wednesday with Director of Palace of
August 10th, 2016 Culture Axhovig Hajredin.
“Ethnographic Museum of Shtjefen (see photo 8).
Then i head towards Ostros the centre of Kraja (see
photo 9). I team up with Dr. Ismail Doda, an old friend of
mine. We visited villages of Kraja and Shestan (see photo
10). Including the village of “Za photo 11).
An interesting activity was going on in Ljarje of Shestan,
with the well-known Marie Nikaj ( photo 12).
I spend the night at Ismail Doda’s house in the village
named Dodaj where family’s hospitality and long
conversations paid off.
Shortly afterwards i visit

August 11th, 2016
I spent hours at Ismail
Doda’s library and scientific
conversations with him.
Finally, after four days of
endless research I get back to Tirana.
Post Festival
I paid special attention at three main activities
happening there: Popular manifestation titled
“Shestani dance” (see photo Popular festival titled
“Chesnutt’s feast” (see photo 14); Traditional image
titled “Days of Albanian Diaspora” (see photo 15).
I have transcribe the topics researched for the
Albanians in Montenegro mostly in my home studio,
in the presence of my niece Elisabeth (see photos
16 and 17).
