Miasmata, Symptoms, and Evidence,
Smells in Russian Culture, 1850-1900s:
Between Medicine and Morals
EUSP Press, 2018. — 392 pp. ISBN 978-5-94380-267-6
The book contributes to anthropology of the senses, medical
anthropology and social history of medicine in modern societies. It
examines the bourgeois transformation of sensibility and olfactory
perception in late Imperial Russia. At the time, the sense of smell was
“advanced” to the forefront of the social scene and widely debated in the
public sphere.
Historical and anthropological studies of the senses are recently
established subfields — or, one might say, approaches to the historical data;
they can even be considered tools to rediscover phenomena and tendencies
that had previously been overlooked. These studies expose and analyse
the social dimension of the senses and related sensibilities. Since 1980s,
a surge of interest in the sensorium of society and the social influence on
senses has produced a number of remarkable works1. Addressing the
already delineated problems, the actual monograph focuses on the medical
and moral reputations of olfaction in the late imperial Russian society.
Besides, it investigates the social factors and strategies that helped to

Summary
disseminate the new olfactory norms and mythologies within the educated
strata. The research design was shaped by the notions of médicalisation
(i.e. the construction and interpretation of routine processes and
phenomena in medical terms) and of public health which entered the
agenda due to the social changes and challenges the Russian Empire was
experiencing in the 1850-1870s.
In the 18th century, a new, more cautious and reflexive approach to
smells (and a re-configuration of sensibility) was transferred to Russia
along with the Western etiquette and Western medical knowledge. On the
one hand, the imported behaviour models and communication rules
brought about a new way of self-awareness. On the other hand, Western
medical theories (particularly, the miasmatic theory) promoted
a revaluation of bodily emanations and everyday smells. New ideas
connected smells to epidemics, treatment and morals, and stirred an
olfactory vigilance in the upper strata. This transformation quickened in
the second half of the 19th century when the Great Reforms and urban
growth challenged the social structure of the time. Both the new bourgeoisie
and the Russian society in general needed shared standards of behaviour,
communication and bodily presence; as a result, mass advice literature
grew prolific. It was then that the conventions and norms of the gentry
were modified to conform to the hygienic standards proposed by medical
experts. Soon, experts were raising their voice to reform the habits and the
habitus of various social groups.
There were several important drivers and media through which the
reshaped hygienic and olfactory norms permeated downwards. Firstly, the
concept of “good manners” (French du bon ton) urged the aspiring middle
strata to imitate the more prestigious norms. Secondly, epidemics alerted
laypeople and prompted them to internalise the medical gaze on themselves
and their living conditions. Thirdly, public leaders and physicians used
every opportunity to discuss public health and the public good in print
ever popularizing current medical knowledge, theories and
recommendations. Invoking public health, they spoke about “Europeanized”
hygienic standards, new boundaries of the bodies, and a new type of
privacy — these were the only means to secure the whole society.
As Russian physicians and hygienists prioritised European (most
notably, German and British) public hygiene systems, they introduced
a specific rhetoric in their popular writings. They equalled sanitation to
European progress, and backwardness to Asiatic filth. In order to be
progressive and European, their readers had to follow their hygienic
recommendations. When contrasted with sanitation problems in Russian
provincial towns and villages, such a rhetoric questioned the social order
and the efficiency of the Russian bureaucracy. Through sanitary reports

and comic feuilletons, it was easily adopted by more or less educated
readers who imitated the sanitary discourse in their private complaints
and public petitions against foul odours and bad sanitation.
The social dimension of epidemics and dangerous diseases was clearly
articulated in the printed media. The national importance of the problem
gave physicians reasons and pretexts to expand the medical gaze and the
medical “nose”. Thus, the notion of smell as a medical symptom or legal
evidence was infiltrating non-medical writings, such as popular books on
housekeeping and advice literature. Their readers (mostly educated people
of mixed background, merchants, petty bureaucrats, military officers, petty
bourgeois) mastered the basics of chemistry, medicine and hygiene. They
learned the language and essentials of organoleptic analysis, and adjusted
their sensory experience to scientific terms through re-training their
attention according to the books’ guidelines. Hygienic exhibitions, both
national and international, were another tool of inculcating new olfactory
and hygienic standards.
As the olfactory and hygienic norms were undergoing changes,
everyday smells and aromas were being revaluated and olfactory tolerance
decreased. This process implied not only the eradication of miasma and
the separation of mixed smells into components according to their
functional spheres but also the disapproval of “loud” smells in the private
sphere. Private aromas were regulated in terms of quantity and quality.
Bodily emanations were criticised as utterly unhealthy; strong perfumes
were treated as immoral; several smells lost their former prestige and
signalled low social status and poor manners. An excessive odour signified
either a lack of hygiene (in peasants or migrant workers), or a lack of
education and manners (in nouveaux riches or social climbers), or a lack
of modesty (in courtesans and fancy women). The shortening of the
distance smell could be perceived at can in itself be interpreted as the
olfactory separation of the public and the private.
Some social theories described this modernisation as the triumph of
sight and the demise of the other senses in the social domain, but they
could be too simplistic. An alternative model stresses the importance of
olfaction, though it does not seem more convincing. In fact, modernisation
influenced the whole sensorium and encouraged its transformation in
several aspects. During the long 19th century’, smell created specific
alliances with taste, touch and sight: what was intolerable for the nose had
to be thoroughly inspected with the naked eye and the microscope, and
tested with the tongue and chemical reactions. While social barriers were
dismantled and recreated through sensory means, olfactory medical
symptoms were reinterpreted as social symptoms which signalled flaws in
the social order or re-affirmed social hierarchies.
