SUMMARY
The end of the III and the beginning of the II millennium BC is
troubled times of “great migration of peoples” of North Eurasia,
changing of socio-economic and cultural stereotypes, the emergence
of the revolutionary technology of metallurgy and metalworking, the
emergence of many new ethnic and cultural populations. In the south
of the forest Volga-Kama climatic features of xerothermic phase of
subboreal (SB-II, 4100-3200 years ago), characterized by the
formation of forest-steppe landscapes, led to contacts of aboriginal
hunting and fishing cultures of garinskiy crop-circle with outsiders
cattle breeding pastoral tribes, tend to occupy ecological niches
suitable for conducting productive economy.
The earliest group of migrants is represented by native cultural
traditions of the vast Indo-European community of battle axes.
Atlikasinsk culture. Atlikasinsk peculiar complexes, long
considered a product of evolution of Balanovo antiquities are
highlighted in particular archaeological culture by P. M. Kozhin. The
author upheld the validity of this concept. In this region of cultural
expression tend to Nizhneye Prisurye and elevated areas of Vetluga-
Vyatka interfluves. Cemeteries are represented by small mounds with
cremation and inhumation in shallow pits and buried soil: Atlikasy,
Raskildino, Kumakkasy, Sintsovo, Verkhniye Achaki, Sarui, Krasnyi
October I; settlements and location: Kubashevo, Vasilsursk II, the
lower layer, Novosyolovo, Polyanki II. Morgaushi II and others.
Ceramic is characterized by small flattened spherical tanks and squat
round-pots with a relatively high inclined or vertical neck, pointed bent
rim. The original zone-geometric pattern includes primed wide
zigzags, large diamonds, squares, rectangles, isosceles and equilateral
triangles, var iably inclined gr oup of segments, straight lines, and short
vertical and oblique segments; located in the lower part of the body a
variety of cross-shaped belt. Flint stone products have triangular-
petiolate “Seima” arrowheads, leaf knives, flat wedge and drilling
axes with sharp and short butts, spherical mace.
262
Forest-steppe origin of Atlikasy populations are likely to penetrate
into the forest zone of the Middle Volga region from the south or
southwest, confirm burial funeral rites and finds miniature models of
solid wheels with hub. P. M. Kozhin rightly excluded this ancient
from the circle of Eastern Europe amphora and cord cultures of battle
axes generality. S. V. Bolshov expected culturological genetic
intimacy with catacomb tribes; despite the fact that D. A. Krainov
convincingly substantiated illegality point of view of the origins of the
catacomb culture of battle axes. V. V. Staviskiy’s hypothesis about the
formation of Atlikasy population in the Middle Oka and areas located
to the west and north-west of it, does not eliminate the problem of the
origin and requires an explanation of absence in these areas of
cemeteries and lasting settlement of atlikasinskiy type.
Stratigraphy indicates an earlier age in relation to oshpandinsk-
hulasyuchsk complexes of balanovo culture. There are two radiocarbon
dates of burials with atlikasinsk manifestations: Novosyurbeyevskiy -
3985+40 BP, 2570-2465, 2620-2340 BC; Volosovo-Danilovskiy -
3650+80 BP, 2140-1920, 2300-1750 BC.
Balanovo culture. The validity of balanovo culture were explered by
O. N. Bader who remains a matter of debate. Some researchers deny its
independence, considering within the “Middle Volga option of
fatyanovo culture”, “fatyanovo historical-cultural community” or “single-
cultural community of fatyanovo-balanovo tribes” noted a genetic link
with the pit-catacomb tribes; southern Russian steppes are considered as a
starting point of migrations, the Western Black Sea region, Precarpathians,
Upper Volga (O. N. Bader, P. N. Tretyakov, etc.). P. M. Kozhin believes
that proper balanovo culture originated in the Middle Volga region in the
interaction of the ancient protofatyanovo substrate and carrier of specific
atlikasinsk culture. He connects the origins of “protofatyanovo” complex
with the area of “amphora” community includes Ukrainian steppe region
borders the Tripoli culture.
Periodization developed by O. N. Bader and A. H. Khalikov, include
Balanovo — XIX—XV centuries BC, Atlikasy - XV—XIV centuries BC,
Oshpandino - XIV-XII centuries BC, Hulasyuch - XI-IX centuries
BC stages a long time looks anachronistic. Modem radiocarbon
calibrated dating of balanovo-fatyanovo complexes include XXVI-
XVIII centuries BC. P. F. Kuznetsov carries balanovo-fatyanovo
263
common to the late phase of the Middle Bronze Age — XXV—XXII
centuries BC.
According to the author, Balanovo culture that existed in the last
quarter of the III - the first quarter of the II millennium BC, was
formed in the Middle Volga region in the interaction of the two most
eastern groups of battle axes common. Large amphora vessels, ground
burials (Kozlowskiy, Pavlushatskiy.), the first group of burials
Balanovo, extensive deep crypts, differentiated by gender writhed
burial, no use of fire in the funeral rites characterize the first
substrate, close to Upper Volga Fatyanovo. Originality of the
Atlikasy groups was mentioned before. The syncretic complexes of
Kurgan (Churachikskiy, Ablyazovskiy) and groundwater (Balanovo,
Novosyurbeyevskiy I, Tautovsky I) cemeteries illustrate intensive
integration processes between them. Formation of balanovo culture
completed
the advent of numerous monuments of oshpandino-hulasyuch type.
The mixed features manifested in ceramics combining “early
balanovo” and atlikasy signs clearly. Burial funeral ceremony
demonstrates the dominance of atlikasy cultural traditions.
Another group of migrants is media of Middle Volga abashevo
culture, part of the vast steppe mainly cultural and historical
community, represented by a large number of burial mounds,
settlements is
unknown. The area includes two separate areas: High Predvolzhye and
south-western spurs of Vyatka ridge with surrounding watershed
plains. Despite the lack of elaboration of chronology, most of modem
researchers attribute! Middle Volga abashevo antiquity to the final
phase of the Middle Bronze Age, corresponding to the end before
seima to the top of seima chronological horizons. It is difficult to use
single radiocarbon date of Pepkinsk mound for absolutely rigorous
conclusions: 3 850±95 BP, 2470-2190, 2600-2000 BC.
Reliable data on participation of Abashevo representative in
culturological genetic processes that took place in the south of the
forest Volga region are absent:. A. H. Khalikov analyzing materials of
Pepkinsk mound concluded hostile relations with Balanovo and
Chirkovskiy population. S. V. Bolshov and P. F. Kuznetsov consider
fraternal military grave of Pepkinsk mound as result of a collision of
Abashevo and Seima-Turbinskiy communities. According to the
264
Seima-turbinskiy phenomenon. Seima-turbinskiy monuments of the
region are represented by random finds of copper and bronze ware,
shareware (Bazyakovo III, Murziha I, Beryozovka-Omary, Krasniy
Yar, Sokolovka) and reliable (Ust-Vetluga) graves.
For a long time the original seima-turbinskiy antiquity has been
considered in the framework of indigenous theories based on bindings
that have altai-siberian roots of seima-turbinskiy metal products to the
flint implements and pottery of local tribes. E. N. Chernykh and
S. V. Kuzminykh moved s way from the traditional culturogical model.
They have created a fundamentally new concept of Seima-Turbinskiy
transcultural phenomenon based on the idea of rapid western migra-
tion of mixed populations, the substrate which is based on metallurgi-
cal-breeders of mountain and foothills Altai, hunters and fishers of the
taiga zone of the Baikal region, Angara Region, Eastern Sayan, and
Middle Yenisei. Their movement included REM movement and stable
habitats. It is assumed that near the Ural Mountains single array split.
We are interested in the southern (Nizhnekamsk) group, which took
place on the west along the Volga and the Oka. Most likely, this
branch has reached the north-west of European Russia, the Eastern
Baltic and Southern Finland.
Unjustifiably broad traditional Seima-Turbinskiy chronology -
XVII-VIII centuries BC concretize calibrated radiocarbon dates Elun-
ino 1 Satygi XVI, Ust-Vetluga (XXII-XVIII centuries BC), generally
corresponding to absolute dating (XVII-XXI centuries BC) of south-
ern taiga, forest-steppe, steppe Eurasian culture in the late middle -
early late region Bronze Age). E. N. Chernykh and S. V. Kuzminykh
believe that “the whole history of seima-turbinskiy peoples hardly ac-
count for more than two centuries”.
Syncretic appearance of seima-turbinskiy groups is obvious, and it
includs representatives of various Eurasian communities. Middle Kama
Seima-Turbinskiy groups interacted with representatives of the South
Ural, Volga-Oka - Middle Volga options of Abashevo cultural-
historical community, Nizhnekamsk - with Early log framework
(Pokrov) population. The author considers the Eurasian substrate of
Ust-Vetluga cares pokrov cultural traditions. Most likely, it is associ-
ated with the appearance of cast lugs with rounded-rhombic rod pen
in the south of the forest Volga; socketed axes with massive heads;
flat adzes; knives with a crosshair-interception, direct and rounded
265
heel. Without denying the seima-abashevo interaction, we note that
the question of pure abashevo, especially Middle Volga component
remains open. There is evidence of contacts with representatives of the
community of battle-axes and fatyanovo-chirkovskiy communities.
The role of the seima-turbin tribes marked the Late Bronze Age of the
forest belt in the culturological genetic processes in the region, re-
quires a special study.
A clear manifestation of foreign medium-late Bronze Age of south
of the forest zone of the Middle Volga is Chirkovskiy syncretic cul-
ture, formed on Balanovo-volosovo basis with the participation of the
western Siberian population. A. H. Khalikov singled Chirkovskiy
(chirkovsk-seiima) culture, considered it as a major ethno-cultural edu-
cation, which included along with numerous settlements in European
cemeteries of Seima-Turbinskiy type. Periodization of Balanovo
culture was taken for a basis of chronology (four stage researched:
galankinogorskiy — XVI-XV centuries BC, seima-kubaschevskiy -
XV-XIV centuries BC, yurinskiy - XIII—XII centuries BC, chirkovskiy -
XI—IX centuries BC).
The author added and specified A. H. Khalikov’s concept signifi-
cantly expanded the source base for exploring chirkovskiy antiquities.
Their habitat is limited to the south of the forest zone of the Middle
Volga, noted the absence of a direct connection with the settlement of
Chirkovskiy Seima-Turbinskiy graves. A new periodization was pro-
posed, including symbiotic, syncretic, later stage (first half of the
II millennium BC). Currently most real dating is the end of III -
the first third of the II millennium BC.
Almost all researchers take chirkovskiy culture as a real cultural and
historical subject, only S. V. Bolshov considered it as a research tool.
In my opinion, a hybrid ceramic of late stage suggests the addition of
organically unified culture.
In the study of primitive history of the Volga-Kama culturological
genesis problems were solved in two ways. The most striking example
of autochthonous theory is A. H. Khalikov’s idea about dominance
of local great Finnish ethnic groups of the early metal. Among
the supporters of immigration views, first of all, V. P. Tretyakov
should be noted, who believed that the invasion of the more developed
pastoral tribes on the Oka and Volga in the middle of the II millenni-
um BC suspended the development of ancient Finno-Ugric peoples.

peoples. According to V. V. Nikitin, promotion of steppe groups
caused the loss of etlmic elements of forestry Aeneolithic substrate in
genetically related entities of the Bronze Age. S. V. Bolshov
categorically denies the existence of culturological genetic processes
on the territory of the forest zone of the Middle Volga in the Middle
Bronze Age.
Ethno-cultural situ ation in the south of the forest zone of the Middle
Volga in the late middle and the beginning of the Late Bronze Age
was as followins. Two lines of culturological genesis are traced.
The first one reflects the formation of Balanovo culture through
interaction of kindred tribes of Indo-European community of battle-
axes, the second — the emergence of syncretic chirkovskiy culture that
has developed with the participation of local (great Finnish ethnically)
late volosovo, Balanovo-Atlikasy and transural Yelunino-Krotovo
substrate associated with native of seima-turbinskiycultural traditions.
Participate of Indo-Iranian Abashevo groups in ethno-cultural proces-
ses looks controversial, as most researchers tend to think of a hostile
nature of their relationship with the Atlikasy, Balanovo, Chirkovskiy
cultures of Seima-Turbinskiy phenomenon, which included forest-
steppe, mainly Pokrov population.
