I xc t. Onufrius Monastery is Lviv mon ument, that managed to preserve in itself the part of spiritual and cultural life of each “lived through” century. All in here is winded round with the mysteriousness and grace, that over whelms every guest of the monastery. It looks like as if some where here lives the ancient history, that no one discovered before, but which is majestic and mysterious. And the im movable walls of this sacred place maintain ancient wisdom of our past. S 1. St. Onufrius Monastery is one of the oldest monasteries in Lviv. Its history dates from the prince epoch. Lviv historian and chronicler Bartolomeo Zymorovych in his work “Leopolis tri plex” wrote about the appearance of the first monks in the time of the prince Lev Danylovych (though it is considered that the mo nastic life existed here since 4th century), who had handed over for their care the legend icon, that might have been painted by the very apostle Luke on the cypress panel. Now, it is known as Czestochowa Icon, or “Black Madonna”. The monks preserved the icon with great honor and privacy. Only in 1382 the Silesian prince Vladyslaw Opolskyi, who was the ruler of Galychyna for that time, brought the icon to Czestochowa, which is their till today. The legend says that Vergin Mary, who saved Belz from tatar invasion, told to do that. Now Czenstochowa Icon is the biggest sanctuary of Poland. 2. The first documentary memory about the monastery is dat ed in 1453. It was mentioned in the document that confirmed granting the large sum of money by Stepan Dropan for the re storing the wooden
walls of the monastery. Also the big amount of the privileges and charters the monastery received being under the protection of the Stavropegion brotherhood (since 1589). 3. In 1895 the public and religious figure Andrey Sheptytskyi became the Father Superior of the st. Onufrius monastery and in two years together with Platonid Filias founded on its terri tory the editorial office of the religious magazine “Missionary”, which became “the first living spiritual word” and had great pop ularity among Ukrainians. 4. Since the end of XVI century the school had worked at the monastery. The school was known as the one “for the poor
and needy” boys. Here the children from not rich families had opportunity to study, even to earn money by translating the let ters received from the patriarch. The younger pupils were taught reading and writing, and the older pupils learned Greek and Lat in. Also, there were hold the lessons of the quire singing and performances of the school theater. 5. The 40s of the XX century were the hardest period for the monastery. The persecution of the monks was increased by the Soviet and Hungarian power, so that they renounce their faith. Nevertheless, the cruel tortures and exiles could not break the spiritual fathers. On the contrary, some monks had enough cour age to express their protest to the government. For instance, there lived in Lviv one monk named Antoniy. When he was appointed as a bishop, the authority sent the monk the threatening letter, that they will “cut out his liver” if he does not refuse the new appointment. All were astonished by the father’s answer, that did not refuse the order, but even would be grateful to them, as he wanted to go to heaven for a long time already and the liver trou bles him the most. 6. On the territory of the monastery there is one of the oldest and the riches libraries of the city of Lviv. There were preserved the hundreds of the priceless books and scientific works more than 500 manuscripts, the rare publications, the chronicles, the historical documents collected during three centuries. Owing to this library there were preserved till nowadays the big amount of the manuscripts, anciently printed and documents, so the wis dom of
the previous centuries and the historical experience of our country. 7. In 1573 the Ukrainian printer famous in the whole world Ivan Fedorov founded in the cell of st. Onufrius the printing of fice. It was here, where saw the world his first book “Apostole”, the publication of which became the renewal of the decayed Ukrainian Publishing. 8. The special attention deserves the Church of st. Onu frius, which during the 500 years of its existence was rebuilt and improved. Its building had lasted for 4 centuries and finished 1902. At first, the church was wooden, but the often raids of Ta tars to the city left their traces on the walls of the church, which had to be practically newly rebuilt in 1672. During 1693-1698 the wall was built around the monastery, which is preserved till today. The present look the church and the monastery acquired in 1815-1820. The Church is famous also for its precious iconos tasis, made in 1901-1908 in the pseudo baroque style, the icons were painted by the famous artist Modest Sosenko.
9. Often the guests of the monastery were famous Ukrainian scientists and artists. For a visit to the monastery library came such famous people as: Oleksandr Colessa, Ivan Ohienko, Vasyl Shchrat, Ivan Franko, Ivan Krypyakevych, Yaroslav Hordynskyi, Kyrylo Stydynskyi, Stepan Tomashivskyi, Markian Shashkevych, Antoniy Petrushevych, Denys Zubrytskyi, Yakiv Holovatskyi and others. In particular, Yakiv Holovatskyi, as one of the cofounders of the association “Rus Trinity”, manifested great interest in studying the funds of the library. By examining the archive collections the writer discovered the valuable for the sci ence memories of the old Ukrainian law ֊ Govern or books of the XIII and XIV centuries and many act materials: charters, letters etc. The selected list of the memories he published in almanac “Dnister Mermaid” named as “Bibliographical list of the ancient Slavik manuscripts, present in the Onufria library in Lviv.” 10. The Bell Tower, which at the same time serves as the en trance to the monastery and the church, is made in the classical style and painted by Ukrainian painter Luka Dolynskyi. During many centuries it accomplished different functions. Now, at the first floor of the building is the ancient library, the second and the third is the place for meetings of the youth organizations and from the third floor opens the beautiful view of the monastery yard and suburb area of Lviv.
