Zusammenfassung: | Popular culture is invariably a vehicle for the dominant ideas of its age. Never was this more true than in the late-19th and early 20th centuries, when it reflected the nationalist and imperialist ideologies current throughout Europe. This text examines the various media through which nationalist ideas were conveyed in late-Victorian and Edwardian times - in the theatre, "ethnic" shows, juvenile literature, education and the iconography of popular art. Several chapters look beyond World War I, when the most popular media, cinema and broadcasting, continued to convey an essentially late-19th-century world view, while government agencies like the Empire Marketing Board sought to convince the public of the economic value of empire. Youth organizations, which had propagated imperialist and militarist attitudes before the war, struggled to adapt to the new internationalist climate |

Youth organizations, which had propagated imperialist and militarist attitudes before the war, struggled to adapt to the new internationalist climate Geschichte 1850-1950 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte 1870-1953 gnd rswk-swf Colonialism & Imperialism / bicssc HISTORY / Europe / Great Britain / bisach Colonialism & imperialism / European history / United Kingdom, Great Britain / thema Imperialism / Public opinion Public opinion / Great Britain Volkskultur (DE-588)4063849-2 gnd rswk-swf Imperialismus (DE-588)4026651-5 gnd rswk-swf Unterhaltung (DE-588)4186996-5 gnd rswk-swf Great Britain / Popular culture / History / 19th century Great Britain / Popular culture / History / 20th century Great Britain / Colonies / History Großbritannien (DE-588)4022153-2 gnd rswk-swf (DE-588)4143413-4 Aufsatzsammlung gnd-content Großbritannien (DE-588)4022153-2 g Imperialismus (DE-588)4026651-5 s Unterhaltung (DE-588)4186996-5 s Geschichte 1870-1953 z DE-604 Volkskultur (DE-588)4063849-2 s Geschichte 1850-1950 z MacKenzie, John M. 1943- (DE-588)130555096 edt Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe, Hardcover Imperialism and popular culture Manchester : Manchester University Press, 1986 Falsche ISBN: 0-7190-1770-4 0-7190-1770-X (DE-604)BV027262397 Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe, Paperback Imperialism and popular culture First digital, on-demand edition Manchester : Manchester University Press, 2006 0-7190-1868-4 (DE-604)BV042771865 https://doi.org/10.7765/9781526119568 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext |
