Glossary
Elladûis (m.)/Elladüissa (f.)IE¡ladites (pi.) Greek(s) of Greece.
éthnos Usually translated as ‘nation’, though might also be translated as ‘peo-
ple’ (Just 1989:72-73). It is important to note that the éthnos is conceptually
distinct from the krâtos (state).
expatriates/expatriated Greeks of Turkey Orthodox Christians from Istanbul
and Imbros, exempted from the 1923 population exchange between Greece
and Turkey, who left Turkey and resettled primarily in Greece.
expellees Greek citizens expelled from Turkey in 1964.
Greek refugees Orthodox Christian forcibly removed from Turkey and relo-
cated to Greece as a result of the Convention Concerning the Exchange of
Greek and Turkish Populations agreed upon by Greece and Turkey in 1923.
Hellene (m.)/Hellene (f.)/Hellenes (p!.)/Hellenism (noun)/He!lenic (adj.)
Translations of the Greek words Ellinas (m.)!Ellinida (i.)!Ellines (pi^/ellinismos
(noun)/ell in i kos (adj.). Sometimes used by the Greeks of Turkey to refer
collectively to all Greeks, and sometimes used specifically to designate the
Greeks of Greece, or those in possession of Greek citizenship.
Imvriétis (m.yimvriétissa (L)lfmvriétes (pl.)/Imvrian (adj.) Greek(s) of Imbros.
omogéneia (noun )! onto gen eis (adj.) Literally ‘homogeneity’ or ‘homogenous’,
these terms are typically used to refer to individuals of Greek descent bom or
living outside Greece.
native Greeks Translation of the Greek dôpioi Ellines, commonly used to dis-
tinguish Greeks bom in the Greek state from the omogéneia, i.e. those of
Greek descent bom outside Greece (and their descendants). Amongst my
interviewees, the term is sometimes used to differentiate Greeks with roots
in Greece from those with roots outside Greece (including the Greek refu-
gees and their descendants), and sometimes more generally to refer to all of
the Greeks of Greece whom the expatriates encountered when they relocated
from Turkey.
Politis (m.)/Polftissa (t)IPolites (pl.)/Constantinopolitan (adj.) Greek(s) of
Istanbul.
Romiôs (m,)/Romia (f.)/Ronrioi (pL)/rontiosyni (noun)/Romaic (adj.) Sometimes
used to refer to all modem Greeks, and sometimes used specifically to desig-
nate the Greeks of the Ottoman Empire and/or the Greeks of Turkey.
