Zusammenfassung: | This book focuses on British efforts to suppress the traffic in female slaves destined for Egyptian harems during the late-nineteenth century. It considers this campaign in relation to gender debates in England, and examines the ways in which the assumptions and dominant imperialist discourses of these abolitionists were challenged by the newly-established Muslim communities in England, as well as by English people who converted to or were sympathetic with Islam. While previous scholars have treated antislavery activity in Egypt first and foremost as an extension of earlier efforts to abolish plantation slavery in the New World, this book considers it in terms of encounters with Islam during a period which it argues marked a new departure in Anglo-Muslim relations. This approach illuminates the role of Islam in the creation of English national identities within the global cultural system of the British Empire. This book would appeal to those with an interest in British imperial history; Islam; gender, feminism, and women’s studies; slavery and race; the formation of national identities; global processes; Orientalism; and Middle Eastern studies 'Lucid and innovative ...highly original ...well-researched, well-written and well-argued, proving a great addition to our knowledge of the effects of empire on metropolitan society. Robinson-Dunn ...brings to life some rich historical episodes and actors.' -- Benjamin Hopkins, Professor of History and International Affairs at the George Washington University 'Timely and relevant ...a striking addition to an interactive imperial historiography ...a very important work.' -- John MacKenzie, eminent historian, founder of the Studies in Imperialism series and Professor Emeritus at Lancaster University |

Conclusion -- List of Abbreviations -- Select Bibliography This book focuses on British efforts to suppress the traffic in female slaves destined for Egyptian harems during the late-nineteenth century. Robinson-Dunn ...brings to life some rich historical episodes and actors.' -- Benjamin Hopkins, Professor of History and International Affairs at the George Washington University 'Timely and relevant ...a striking addition to an interactive imperial historiography ...a very important work.' -- John MacKenzie, eminent historian, founder of the Studies in Imperialism series and Professor Emeritus at Lancaster University Geschichte 1800-1900 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte 1850-1900 gnd rswk-swf Colonialism & Imperialism / bicssc HISTORY / Europe / Great Britain / bisach Colonialism & imperialism / European history / United Kingdom, Great Britain / thema Prostitution / Egypt / History / 19th century Prostitution / Great Britain / History / 19th century Antislavery movements / Egypt Islam / Relations / Christianity Christianity and other religions / Islam Abschaffung (DE-588)4200586-3 gnd rswk-swf Harem (DE-588)4159110-0 gnd rswk-swf Sklavin (DE-588)4204353-0 gnd rswk-swf Nationalbewusstsein (DE-588)4041282-9 gnd rswk-swf Sklavenhandel (DE-588)4198287-3 gnd rswk-swf Einwanderer (DE-588)4151434-8 gnd rswk-swf Muslim (DE-588)4040921-1 gnd rswk-swf Egypt / Foreign public opinion, British Great Britain / Foreign relations / Egypt Egypt / Foreign relations / Great Britain Großbritannien (DE-588)4022153-2 gnd rswk-swf Ägypten (DE-588)4000556-2 gnd rswk-swf Großbritannien (DE-588)4022153-2 g Sklavin (DE-588)4204353-0 s Harem (DE-588)4159110-0 s Ägypten (DE-588)4000556-2 g Sklavenhandel (DE-588)4198287-3 s Abschaffung (DE-588)4200586-3 s Geschichte 1850-1900 z DE-604 Nationalbewusstsein (DE-588)4041282-9 s Muslim (DE-588)4040921-1 s Einwanderer (DE-588)4151434-8 s Geschichte 1800-1900 z Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe, Hardcover Robinson-Dunn, Diane The harem, slavery and British imperial culture Manchester : Manchester University Press, 2006 978-0-7190-7328-1 (DE-604)BV021320266 Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe, Paperback Robinson-Dunn, Diane The harem, slavery and British imperial culture Manchester : Manchester University Press, 2014 978-0-7190-7329-8 https://doi.org/10.7765/9781526118639 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext |
