Drasici Village Community after
the Second World War

Presenting the functioning of the Dra-
sici village community in the region of Bela
Krajina, the article focuses on the decades
after the Second World War. This was the
period when significant political, social,
and economic changes started to radically
transform the way of life not only in urban
centers but also in rural areas.
Soon after the war, the centuries-old
and well-established modus operandi of
the village community began to change
due to new employment possibilities in the
town of Metlika and elsewhere. The insti-
tution of the village community as a form
of village self-governance, which was based
on common economic interest of all hou-
seholders and their wish to manage issues
relevant to the whole village community,
died away in most places in Bela Krajina;
its social role has been taken over by local
communities and various societies. The
only one that has continuously operated
and has been preserved to the present is the
village community of Drasici. Its most dis-
tinctive characteristic is the close connecti-
on between inhabitants from the villages of
Drasici, Krmacina, and 2elezniki with the
communal wine cellar and the succursal
church of St. Peter in Drasici. Members of
the Drasici village community are house-
holders from the three villages who donate
a part of their wine to the communal wine
cellar. This wine represents the principal
capital of the village community, and the
funds from its sale cover various expenses
of the community, for example the mainte-
nance of the communal wine cellar and of
the village church.
In recent years, the activity of the
Drasici village community has been in full
swing. In order to cover a number of costs
of the operation of the community villagers
organize various events and activities, for
example wine tastings and evaluation of wi-
nes; art workshops and exhibits; sightseeing
tours of the communal wine cellar; and the
annual visit to the wine cellars owned by
members of the Drasici village community
in the three villages. These additional acti-
vities, which were first introduced in the
1990 s, have enabled the village community
to open to the outside world but still preser-
ve its traditional forms of village self- gover-
nance. With the help of the media it success-
fully promotes its activities and significantly
contributes to the recognizability of Drasici
and the entire village community.
