SUMMARY In March 1828, the most widely read daily newspaper in the Kingdom of Poland published detailed information on wine production in Poland. It appeared at a time when censorship of the press was growing and political restrictions were being imposed on the Poles by Russian officials. These repressions led to the outbreak of the November Uprising (November 1830—September 1831). The wine from the government’s vineyard in the Bo tanical Garden was produced by Louis Leraud (1789after 1846), a French garden designer. Although limited quantities of wine had been made in Poland since the adoption of Christianity, it had never been official govern ment policy. The Minister of Internal Affairs and Police, Count Tadeusz Mostowski (1766-1842), an intellectual and politician, was responsible for popularizing vine growing and winemaking. He himself owned several vineyards near Warsaw. Vine-growing was part of a pro gramme to modernize Polish agriculture which had been monopolized by the cultivation of grain. Mostowski based his reforms on Jean-Baptiste Says economic theories, which required consumer needs to be factored into the 110
SUMMARY economic equation, an aspect which had been previously overlooked. In Poland, this meant the need to appeal to the significance of wine in Polish culture. The two leading yet contradictory ideas in Polish culture in the early nineteenth century—Classicism and Romanticism—did not include wine as a key subject. From the end of the eighteenth century, wine was gener ally associated with foreign invaders and the drunkenness of the szlachta, which—as was firmly believed—had led to the partitions of Poland. The Romantics (Adam Mickiewicz) more willing!y referred to mead as being the national drink. The Classicists (Kajetan Koźmian) associated wine with antiquity, and the refined tastes of the aristocracy. Wine-related subjects in literature and journalism, however, did not actually address the actual process of cultivating the vines, which is what Mostowski was most concerned about. Vineyards which appeared sporadically in the grounds of aristocratic parks did not fulfil his expectations. In addition, the vineyard in the Botanical Garden drew in the crowds thanks to the added attrac tion of a sundial (compass) installed on the edge of it on 3 May 1828 (on the 37th anniversary of the adoption of the Pohsh constitution—the first in Europe). Natural time, marked out by the sun, corrected’ the fatefiil events of contemporary history which were not favourable to the Poles and provided a glimmer of hope of a better future. Wojciech Jastrzębowski (1799-1882), the creator of the ‘Jastrzębowski compass’, a botanist who worked at the 111
WINO NARODOWE Botanical Garden, as a soldier in the November Uprising had already published yet again—on 3 May—the first ‘constitution of a united Europe’. The sundial and nearby observatory attracted crowds of Varsovians, and also gave Lerauds vineyard political significance. It was visited by the nouveaux riches’ and the ‘intellectual class’ of the rapidly growing city. Within thirty years Warsaw had doubled the number of its in habitants. The ‘new class’, of officials and entrepreneurs, men of letters and students who went for walks in the gardens, was no longer influenced by the disputes be tween the Classicists and Romantics. For them, refined taste was less important than a real flavour—varied, and democratic, not far-removed from wine-tasting. Their beliefs were presented in the literary and satirical weekly ‘Motyl’ (Butterfly) published by Prince Włodzimierz Drucki-Lubecki (1808-1889), nephew of the then Min ister of the Treasury. In the pages of the weekly we can find the names of the most important authorities on the new French art of gastronomy such as Joseph Berchoux, Alexandre-Balthazar-Laurent Grimod de La Reynière, Joseph Alexander de Segur and Anthelem Brillat-Savarin. ‘Motyl’ drew attention to the social idiosyncrasies of wine-tasting, which changed the image of Polish wine in the minds of the Poles. ‘Experience’ and ‘everyday reality’, categories which can be associated with the ‘new class’, deprived wine of the artistic and literary associations it had had up until then. They could make it an intermedi ary between opposing sides, be they literary or

SUMMARY ones, resulting from the November Uprising. The author believes that the most appropriate term for this new medi atory role and place of wine in Polish culture, and also in the dramatic events of the insurrection, would be the ancient concept of aisthesis. It connected the sensual with the rational, Romanticism with Classicism and gained a prominent place in the aesthetics of the mid-eighteenth century. It also corresponded to Mostowskis political intentions, because it overruled the dichotomous nature of the emerging Polish modern consciousness which was shaped out of the dispute between these two trends (Romanticism and Classicism).
