Zusammenfassung: | For nearly three hundred years, the East India Company dominated British trade and relations with Asia. It made handsome profits for shareholders but also provided collectors in Europe with natural specimens and man-made rarities that were prized for their scientific, aesthetic or cultural value. An array of administrators, soldiers, surveyors spent much of their lives attempting to inventory and to comprehend India's vast country, its teeming populations and its myriad rituals and wildlife: nearly forty species of mammals and over 120 species of birds were discovered in the Katmandu valley alone; astonishing wall paintings from the fifth-century were unearthed in caves at Ajanta; and spectacular fossil fauna arrived from the Siwalik Hills. Company Curiosities: Nature, Culture and the East India Company, 1600-1874 offers the first-ever overview of the remarkable role of the East India Company and its servants in collecting and showcasing a treasure-house of natural specimens and man-made objects - craft materials, paintings and sculptures, weapons, costumes, jewels and ornaments - that established the look and the feel of India for those who had never ventured abroad. Arthur MacGregor tells the stories behind the remarkable discoveries and collections, and those responsible for them, and their impact on natural science, commerce and industry, and personal taste |

Arthur MacGregor tells the stories behind the remarkable discoveries and collections, and those responsible for them, and their impact on natural science, commerce and industry, and personal taste East India Company London (DE-588)2052078-5 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte 1600-1874 gnd rswk-swf Kunst (DE-588)4114333-4 gnd rswk-swf Kolonialismus (DE-588)4073624-6 gnd rswk-swf Natur (DE-588)4041358-5 gnd rswk-swf Museum (DE-588)4040795-0 gnd rswk-swf Sammlung (DE-588)4128844-0 gnd rswk-swf Rezeption (DE-588)4049716-1 gnd rswk-swf Sammeln (DE-588)4051494-8 gnd rswk-swf Kunsthandwerk (DE-588)4073883-8 gnd rswk-swf Rarität (DE-588)4176962-4 gnd rswk-swf Kultur (DE-588)4125698-0 gnd rswk-swf Indien (DE-588)4026722-2 gnd rswk-swf England (DE-588)4014770-8 gnd rswk-swf Großbritannien (DE-588)4022153-2 gnd rswk-swf East India Company London (DE-588)2052078-5 b Indien (DE-588)4026722-2 g Kunst (DE-588)4114333-4 s Kultur (DE-588)4125698-0 s Geschichte 1600-1874 z DE-604 Natur (DE-588)4041358-5 s Rezeption (DE-588)4049716-1 s England (DE-588)4014770-8 g Kunsthandwerk (DE-588)4073883-8 s Rarität (DE-588)4176962-4 s Sammeln (DE-588)4051494-8 s Großbritannien (DE-588)4022153-2 g Kolonialismus (DE-588)4073624-6 s Museum (DE-588)4040795-0 s Sammlung (DE-588)4128844-0 s Digitalisierung BSB München - ADAM Catalogue Enrichment application/pdf http://bvbr.bib-bvb.de:8991/F?func=service&doc_library=BVB01&local_base=BVB01&doc_number=030760947&sequence=000001&line_number=0001&func_code=DB_RECORDS&service_type=MEDIA Inhaltsverzeichnis |
