Zusammenfassung: | What does it mean to display war? Examining a range of different exhibitions in Britain, Canada and Australia, Jennifer Wellington reveals complex imperial dynamics in the ways these countries developed diverging understandings of the First World War, despite their cultural, political and institutional similarities. While in Britain a popular narrative developed of the conflict as a tragic rupture with the past, Australia and Canada came to see it as engendering national birth through violence. Narratives of the war's meaning were deliberately constructed by individuals and groups pursuing specific agendas: to win the war and immortalise it at the same time. Drawing on a range of documentary and visual material, this book analyses how narratives of mass violence changed over time. Emphasising the contingent development of national and imperial war museums, it illuminates the way they acted as spaces in which official, academic and popular representations of this violent past intersect |

Emphasising the contingent development of national and imperial war museums, it illuminates the way they acted as spaces in which official, academic and popular representations of this violent past intersect Geschichte 1914-2017 gnd rswk-swf World War, 1914-1918 / Exhibitions / Great Britain World War, 1914-1918 / Exhibitions / Canada World War, 1914-1918 / Exhibitions / Australia World War, 1914-1918 / Museums / Great Britain World War, 1914-1918 / Museums / Canada World War, 1914-1918 / Museums / Australia Collective memory / Great Britain Collective memory / Canada Collective memory / Australia War memorials / Great Britain War memorials / Canada War memorials / Australia Museum (DE-588)4040795-0 gnd rswk-swf Kollektives Gedächtnis (DE-588)4200793-8 gnd rswk-swf Ausstellung (DE-588)4129601-1 gnd rswk-swf Erster Weltkrieg Motiv (DE-588)4189594-0 gnd rswk-swf Kanada (DE-588)4029456-0 gnd rswk-swf Großbritannien (DE-588)4022153-2 gnd rswk-swf Australien (DE-588)4003900-6 gnd rswk-swf 1\p (DE-588)4113937-9 Hochschulschrift gnd-content Großbritannien (DE-588)4022153-2 g Kanada (DE-588)4029456-0 g Australien (DE-588)4003900-6 g Erster Weltkrieg Motiv (DE-588)4189594-0 s Ausstellung (DE-588)4129601-1 s Museum (DE-588)4040795-0 s Kollektives Gedächtnis (DE-588)4200793-8 s Geschichte 1914-2017 z 2\p DE-604 Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe 978-1-10-713507-9 https://doi.org/10.1017/9781316471388 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
