KATI - A PATRIOT AND ALBANIAN THEATRE PRIMA DONNA
Kate Dulaj, or as she is known by her artistic name Katarina Josipi, our great Kati was bom
in the village of Zym in Has, Municipality of Prizren, on 9 November 1923. She was
christened in the church in Zym.
Kate Dulaj was a daughter of Gjin and Gjyste (Prekpalaj) Dulaj. Dulaj family had four
children - Mark, Lazer, Kate and Pal. Parents named Kate based on the Saint Catherine of
Alexandria day, patron saint of the church in Peja (celebrated on 25 November) and also the
family saint of Kati’s uncles - the Prekpalaj family. Otherwise, Kati and her brothers were the
10 generation of the Berisha family, who came from Tropoja (Albania) and settled in Zym.
More exactly, the name of the first family head of the Berisha neighborhood (in Zym), who
came from Tropoja was Pece and then we have his descendants: Pjeter [the son] of Pece,
Ndrcke of Pjeter, Mark of Ndreke, Gege of Mark, Ndue of Gege, Pjeter of Ndou, Joze of
Pjeter, Gjin of Joze and Kate Dulaj, alias Katarina Josipi.
Katarina Josipi started her primary school in Zym attending classes in Serbian language, after
the murder of father Shtjefen Gjeyovi, w hile she finished the school in Nis (now Serbia)
where she lived with her father, a baker. She also attended sewing night school. After the
bombardment of Nis in April 1941 Kati’s father, as well as many other bakers from Zym fled
Nis and Kati’s father, Gjin Joza, settled in Ferizaj.
As an amateur actor, Katarina Josipi acted on the podium of the Amateur Theatre in Ferizaj
alongside Shaban Gashi and Mateje Serreqi, both of them from Ferizaj. It was late 1947
when, for the first time, professional theatre was being established in Prishtina. Meanwhile,
in the spring of 1948 Katarina Josipi, Hyrije Hana and Meribane Shala joined this theatre, the
first three Albanian female actors in this theatre. First play, or as we say first premiere, in this
theatre was put on stage on 1 May 1949 and it was “The Suspect” of the Serbian author
Branislav Nusic, who in earlier times had served as a consul in Prishtina.
Katarina Josipi was a part of the Professional Theatre in Prishtina for 21 years
And, amazingly at the same place, on 29 April 1969 she passed away at the age of 46, and
oddly enough it was the day of the Saint Catherine of Sienna (celebrated on 29 April), and
placed in a grave at the place where she comes from - Shengjergj, close to Zym i Hasit te
Thate next to the priest and a patriot, father Luigj Palaj, massacred (on 7 March 1913) by the
Serbs and Montenegrins for not allowing Albanians to convert to Serb Orthodox Church, and
next to the great polyedric figure of Albanian cultural heritage - father Shtjefen Gjegovi,
killed by the Serbs on 14 November 1929. She was placed in a grave within the yard of the
saint Prene church in Shengjergj, and after 26 years she was joined by Kati’s compatriot,
most famous modem prose writer in Albanian literature - Anton Pashku, and now lately
famous mezzo soprano Hermina Lekaj (21 November 2007) was buried in this cemetery.

Kati - a shepherd and a minister
We saw Katarina Josipi - Kati at the stage of the professional theatre, we heard her voice on
the radio in several radio dramas, and we also saw her on TV and in cinemas. However, she
lived for the theatre stage, the place where she would start the magic life you see and feel, the
place where she revealed the human character of the roles she played. She was a doyen of the
Albanian drama. Kati’s life would begin with the stage lights. She gave all herself into it. She
is still alive on the stage, even 43 years after she passed away. She lives in the memories of
the artists, the audience and theatre supporters.
For twenty one years, the time she lived on the stage of the Prishtina Professional Theatre,
Kati was a champion, performer of the most demanding and complicated roles of our
theatres’ different repertoire. Kati’s internal beauty would erupt only when the lights in the
theatre would go off and the stage lights would come on. At this time, her artistic
temperament would fascinate and transfer the audience to another dimension.
Leading, support or periodic roles were of same importance to Kati. She interpreted all of
them with greatest passion and commitment, by uniting herself with the roles, experiencing
them and creating new faces and characters. Accordingly, for Kati it was the same if she was
interpreting roles in original dramas or interpreted, classic or contemporary.
With rare invention, Kati would interpret a shepherd or a minister. She had transformational
skills. She deeply impersonificated the roles she interpreted. She would identify herself with
the destiny and relieve their character. So, Katarina Josipi, with her talent of the first and
great artist, raised a gallery of roles which felt the life outside the boundaries, time and space.
Indeed, it is very hard for us now to go through the 70 or more roles she interpreted during
her relatively short life.
In 21 years she interpreted 80 roles
During the 21 years she worked in the Prishtina Professional Theatre she acted along
Nexhmije Pagarusha, Bekim Fehmiu, Muharrem Qena, Hyrie Hana, Istref Begolli, Xhevat
Qena, Shani Pallaska, Malo Garni, Ragip Loxha, Kriste Berisha, Matej Serreqi, Shaban
Gashi, Abdylrrahman Shala, Melihate Ajet, Leze Qena, Meribane Shala, Adelajde Sopi,
Belxhyzare Fejza, Qazim Dushku, Vera Balaj, Mikel Balaj, Adem Mikullovci, Dibran Tahiri,
Selman Lokaj, Safete Rogova and many many others.
Kati was able to mimic complex faces, even when those were unfinished by the author or the
director. The roles Kati played had, in a very natural and convincing manner, the mark of
time, surroundings and conditions where she herself was formed.
Katarina Josipi - Kati received many prizes and awards from the professional institutions of
the time for her contribution and results achieved. In particular, we will mention that she was
a laureate of the Kosovo Assembly December Prize in 1958, which was a synonym to the
Bujan decisions, the place where it was decided to have Kosovo unite with Albania after
World War II.

Kati - NDSH member
In fact, after Kati’s family returned from Nis to Ferizaj, her brother, Lazer, who was Gjon
Sereqi’s student in Prishtina Lyceum in 1945, and Kati joined the Albanian National
Democracy Organization (NDSH). Moreover, NDSH was looking to recruit female members
since they were needed to deliver letters; collect and distribute aid, especially to the families
of the executed people, prisoners, for the people in the woods, and for distribution of posters
and leaflets in different places.
Occupiers’ repercussive apparatus bodies have increased their activities in the second part of
1945. Even more, according to data from that time investigative bodies were successful in
killing 15 and wounding 12 important activists of the armed wing of NDSH, who resisted the
occupier. Almost daily, Serb occupiers’ police and military units arrested zealous members of
the NDSH. During 1945-1948 military and civilian tribunals in Prizren, Prishtina, Gjilan,
Peje, Tetove and Shkup transformed into lynch centers. The arrested were asked to cooperate
in unveiling their compatriots and when NDSH activists rejected to do so, fabricated and
lengthy proceedings would be initiated and adjudicating Albanian activists with severe
sentences of 20 or more years of imprisonment or even execution.
Based on the documented and memorized data it turns out that Serbian authorities, although
in possession of plenty of evidence on NDSH and Albanian Resistance Movement actions
never achieved finding and arresting all Albanian movement members, although their main
goal was to arrest the organizers and the leaders since if many people were arrested it would
not reflect well with the international community and the state would compromise itself.
The state brought to Kosovo an OZNA major, Dimitrije Kolkovic, who was well known as an
investigation expert for Albanians, since he had conducted investigations against Albanian
activists in Shkup. He came to Ferizaj to lead investigations against Albanians in Gjilan,
Ferizaj and Kapanik. Later, OZNA started arresting NDSH members in Gjilan. In OZNA
actions the following were arrested: Rexhep Sheme Dajkoci, Maliq Sahiti, Riza Osmani,
Ramadan Agushi, Destan Budrika, Jakup Salihu, Mumin Jakupi, Azem Sylejmani, Syle
Ademi, Ibrahim Karaqeva, Njazi Atallahu - Fehmiu, Arif Sylqini etc, whilst Saqip Sylejmani
managed to get away and to escape to Italy. According to an official letter dated 22 October
1946 all of them were arrested during the night and against whom, according to OZNA
Lieutenant V. Vojvodic, a procedure was initiated for offences against the state and the
people. In the eve of 22 October 1946 the.prisoners.were handcuffed in pairs and taken to
Ferizaj prison for investigations. Only Rexhep Dajkoci was separated from the group and was
given special treatment. Although all of the arrested agreed what to say during investigation,
Rexhep Shema was the most dignifying of all since he sacrificed himself to save others in
claiming that he did not have any accomplices among the arrested. This can be clearly
noticed in the minutes from Rexhep Dajkoci interrogations and from others’ interrogations.
On 15 August 1946 three more NDSH members were arrested in Ferizaj, Sefedin Shabani, Rrustem
Statovci and Lazer Josipi. This was followed by another wave of arrests on 21 October 1946 where 19
activists from Ferizaj and Kapanik were arrested.
Ill
In fact, Albanian activists that were part of the Gjilan proceedings and who were convicted are:
Hamdi Berisha, Maliq Sahiti, Ramadan Agushi, Jakup Malisheva, Rexhep Sheme Dajkoci, Arif
Salihu, Riza Osmani, Destan Budrika, Lazer Josipi, Rrustem Statovci, Sefedin Shabani, Hysen
Dalladaku, Ismail Mema, Njazi Qarkaxhiu, Hamdi Dalipi, Zija Shuku, Haki Zylfiqari, Salih Aliu, Ilaz
Ibrahimi, Murat Zherka, Fehmi Zherka, Hajredin Fazli Duraj, Syle Fejza, Abaz Behluli, Xhemajl
Maksuti, Hajrush Halimi, Fahri Halimi, Hilmi Ejupi, Shefki Metushi, Ibrahim Grainca, Asllan Buza
and Rifat Tasholli.
While after some torture and imprisonment the following were released without charges: Mumin
Jakupi, Shaban Bekteshi, Ismajl Sylejmani, Katarina Josipi (the only woman), Gani Xaja and Ali
Murseli.
Consequently, 32 persons were convicted in this process, one of them with the capital punishment,
while the other 31 were convicted for 316 years of strict imprisonment in total. Kati’s brother, Lazer,
was among the convicted, with 12 years of imprisonment.
Private life Calvary
Furthermore, Katarina Josipi - Hila’s judgment inter alia stated the following: “Katarina Josipi - Hila,
daughter of Gjin and Gjyste, age 23, Albanian, of Catholic religion, SFRY citizen, housewife,
married, no children, allegedly unpunished, with poor economical conditions, now in detention ...”
(Sabile Kegmezi-Basha “A devoted member of the NDSH”, Koha Ditore, Prishtine, 17 February
2007, page 44). However, all the released were considered as “enemies of the people”. This means
that the Serbian-Yugoslav authorities of the time never forgot about them. This is noticed by the fact
that after Katarina Josipi was released from prison UDBA undertook other actions against her.
On the other hand, there was a thought that Kati didn’t have a personal life. Indeed, she had many
obligations, but she also had a private life. She was married to Pjeter Hila, an emigrant of the time,
from Shkodra in Albania. She was mother twice. She gave birth to two children, which she lost to
heavy disease at the age of four and two. Later, she lost her husband as well, who was extradited from
Kosovo by the Serbian-Yugoslav authorities as persona non grata to Albania. Kali never remarried.
However, a year before she passed away (1968) she visited her former husband in Shkodra. Kati
visited his new family. She met the wife and two children of her former husband, who had same
names as Kati’s children.
Kati’s Ring
Finally, we have to stress that the Prishtina National Theatre Competition for the Original Drama in
1971 was named in Kati’s honor, which was administered by this theatre. Her name (Katarina Josipi)
was also given to the Artistic-Cultural Association of Zym in Has i Thate, which was founded at the
first anniversary of her death (4 May 1970). Her name is borne by a street in Prishtina, a foreign
languages school in Peja, and there is a prize for the best female actress in comedy (Presheve, Eastern
Kosovo), and in her home place Zym in Has, for several years now the prize of “Kati’s Ring” is being
awarded. Up to now this prize was given to Safete Rogova, Lajde Kajtazi-Kolgjeraj, Leze Qena,
Hermine Delhysa-Lekaj, Arta Dobroshi, Nexhmije Pagarusha, Atifete Jahjaga and Jozefina Topalli
(Albania), Nevila Nika (Albania), Melihate Qena, Arbana Xharra end Ermine Lekaj - Perlaskaj.
