Russian Federation within the scope of implementation of the complex project “Cultural Heritage - Island Town of Sviyazhsk and Ancient Bolgar” initiated by Mintimer Sharipovich Shaimiev. The work constituted a part of research activities on complex research of the archaeological and historical
materials of Bolgar settlement. Documents discovered in archives played a significant role in the compilation of
supplementary materials for the inclusion of Bolgar Historical and Architectural Complex in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. After the events of 1917 our country ’s social life experienced a period of significant uplift: the young Soviet state encouraged the performance of research works aimed at the investigation of the cultures of peoples populating the former Russian Empire. In the 1920s special scientific expeditions were organized not only by central organizations in Moscow and Petrograd, but also initiated by local and municipal authorities. These included expeditions by F. V. Ballod aimed at the research of Golden Horde towns, scientific works performed in Central Asia by V. V. Bartold, and many others. Of special significance are the scientific works of an expedition aimed at the research of Tatar culture in Crimea and Tatarstan conducted under the supervision of I. N. Borozdin, A. S. Bashkirov and U. A. Bodaninsky. A high estimation of research results by the contemporaries and scientists who used individual materials of the performed works in their publications emphasized the ongoing relevancy of the obtained results. Their academic relevance and the necessity of publication are repeatedly emphasized at the present development stage of scientific research. The publication of these unique sources in the form of a collective monograph has only become possible because of the support granted by the President of the Tatarstan Republic Rustam Nurgaliyevich Minnikhanov who highly appreciates the significance of the collected materials for the history of the Tatar
people. Archival research has demonstrated that the scientific “Expedition aimed at the research of Tatar culture in the Tatar Republic and Crimea” conducted in the 1920s revealed a significant amount of materials on the archaeology of Bolgar and other cultural heritage sites of the Tatarstan Republic. Due to a series of objective reasons, the materials of this expedition were deposited in several Russian archival collections - Archive of the Institute for the History of Material Culture of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Saint Petersburg), State Archive of the Russian Federation (Moscow), Archival Collection of the Schusev State Museum of Architecture (Moscow), Written Sources Department of the State Historical Museum (Moscow), Archive of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Moscow), State Archive of Moscow, Manuscript

The expedition conducted in the 1920s for the purpose of research of the Tatar culture in
Tatarstan and Crimea was supervised by the following renowned Russian archaeologists: Deputy Chairman of the USSR Association of Orientalists (subsequently the Institute of Oriental Studies ofthe USSRAcademy of Sciences) I. N. Borozdin, archaeologist and Professor of Moscow State University A. S.
Bashkirov, and Director of the Bakhchisaray Palace Museum U. A. Bodaninsky. Several years after the completion of works in Tatarstan the expedition leaders were repressed, and the materials collected by the expedition did not receive adequate publication and were effectively forgotten for the
following several decades. It was not by chance that the expedition was entitled “Research of the Tatar culture”,
and there is no coincidence in that the origins of this culture were sought and studied by our predecessors in Tatarstan and Crimea where the greatest number of Tatar cultural heritage monuments have preserved, dating back to the periods of Volga Bolgaria (10th-13 th cc.), the Golden Horde (13th-15th cc.) and the early Tatar states (16th17th cc.). Considering the special significance of graphic materials obtained by the expedition conducted with the participation of numerous renowned scientists of the time for the cultural heritage of Bolgar town and all Russian peoples, the results of Tatarstan and Crimean expeditions of the 1920s require a complete collective publication. Archival funds contain an extensive collection of unique materials documenting the long perished material sources on medieval architecture (survey diagrams, interior and exterior photographs of buildings), epigraphy (embedded, dedicative and memorial stones), as well as decorative stone carving and plastics, ancient ceramics and coining. The present publication of archival documents and research papers represents the onset of a new series of scientific literature aimed at the publication of the complete collection of unique materials and works dedicated to the research of Tatar culture, jointly entitled “Miras-Heritage”. This major goal is planned to be achieved with the compilation of the second part of this publication, which is going to contain an annotated album with all the photographs and graphical materials collected by the “Expedition aimed at the research of Tatar culture in the Tatar Republic
and Crimea” conducted in the 1920s. The structure of this work includes a scientific organizational analysis of the expedition, information about its major members and results, as well as the assessment of its contribution to the development of Russian Tatarology, and an annotated album with a complete set of graphical materials. The uniqueness of this subject is confirmed by the participation of renowned leading specialists in the field of archaeology and Oriental studies in the ongoing work. In order to familiarize with the idea of the scale of conducted research and the contribution of every individual member, one should visualize the description of works performed by researchers to explore the boundaries of this immense scientific challenge. Leading scientists of that period I. N. Borozdin and A. S. Bashkirov, as well as Moscow (B. N. Zasypkin), Tatarstan (N. F. Kalinin) and Crimean (U. A. Bodaninsky, O. N.-A. Akchokrakly, R I. Gollandsky, N. P. Ernst) researchers undoubtedly made an indispensable contribution to the research of the Tatar culture in our country. Great amount of work which they performed in the 1920s, closely related to the political events of that period, deserves an adequate description and

Russian Federation within the scope of implementation of the complex project “Cultural Heritage - Island Town of Sviyazhsk and Ancient Bolgar” initiated by Mintimer Sharipovich Shaimiev. The work constituted a part of research activities on complex research of the archaeological and historical
materials of Bolgar settlement. Documents discovered in archives played a significant role in the compilation of
supplementary materials for the inclusion of Bolgar Historical and Architectural Complex in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. After the events of 1917 our country’s social life experienced a period of significant uplift: the young Soviet state encouraged the performance of research works aimed at the investigation of the cultures of peoples populating the former Russian Empire. In the 1920s special scientific expeditions were organized not only by central organizations in Moscow and Petrograd, but also initiated by local and municipal authorities. These included expeditions by F. V. Ballod aimed at the research of Golden Horde towns, scientific works performed in Central Asia by V. V. Bartold, and many others. Of special significance are the scientific works of an expedition aimed at the research of Tatar culture in Crimea and Tatarstan conducted under the supervision off N. Borozdin, A. S. Bashkirov and U. A. Bodaninsky. A high estimation of research results by the contemporaries and scientists who used individual materials of the performed works in their publications emphasized the ongoing relevancy of the obtained results. Their academic relevance and the necessity of publication are repeatedly emphasized at the present development stage of scientific research. The publication of these unique sources in the form of a collective monograph has only become possible because of the support granted by the President of the Tatarstan Republic Rustam Nurgaliyevich Minnikhanov who highly appreciates the significance of the collected materials for the history of the Tatar
people. Archival research has demonstrated that the scientific “Expedition aimed at the research of Tatar culture in the Tatar Republic and Crimea” conducted in the 1920s revealed a significant amount of materials on the archaeology of Bolgar and other cultural heritage sites of the Tatarstan Republic. the Tatar culture in Tatarstan and Crimea was supervised by the following renowned Russian archaeologists: Deputy Chairman of the USSR Association of Orientalists (subsequently the Institute of Oriental Studies of the USSR Academy of Sciences) I. N. Borozdin, archaeologist and Professor of Moscow
State University A. S. Bashkirov, and Director of the Bakhchisaray Palace Museum U. A. Bodaninsky. Several years after the completion of works in Tatarstan the expedition leaders were repressed, and the materials collected by the expedition did not receive adequate publication and were effectively
forgotten for the following several decades. It was not by chance that the expedition was entitled “Research of the
Tatar culture”, and there is no coincidence in that the origins of this culture were sought and studied by our predecessors in Tatarstan and Crimea where the greatest number of Tatar cultural heritage monuments have preserved, dating back to the periods of Volga Bolgaria (10th-13th cc.), the Golden Horde (13th-15th cc.) and the early Tatar states (16th17th cc.). Considering the special significance of graphic materials obtained by the expedition conducted with the participation of numerous renowned scientists of the time for the cultural heritage of Bolgar town and all Russian peoples, the results of Tatarstan and Crimean expeditions of the 1920s require a complete collective publication. Archival funds contain an extensive collection of unique materials documenting the long perished material sources on medieval architecture (survey diagrams, interior and exterior photographs of buildings), epigraphy (embedded, dedicative and memorial stones), as well as decorative stone carving and plastics, ancient ceramics and coining. The present publication of archival documents and research papers represents the onset of a new series of scientific literature aimed at the publication of the complete collection of unique materials and works dedicated to the research of Tatar culture, jointly entitled “Miras-Heritage”. This major goal is planned to be achieved with the compilation of the second part of this publication, which is going to contain an annotated album with all the photographs and graphical materials collected by the “Expedition aimed at the research of Tatar culture in the
Tatar Republic and Crimea” conducted in the 1920s. The structure of this work includes a scientific organizational analysis of the expedition, information about its major members and results, as well as the assessment of its contribution to the development of Russian Tatarology, and an annotated album with a complete set of graphical materials. The uniqueness of this subject is confirmed by the participation of renowned leading specialists in the field of archaeology and Oriental studies in the ongoing work. In order to familiarize with the idea of the scale of conducted research and the contribution of every individual member, one should visualize the description of works performed by researchers to explore the boundaries of this immense scientific challenge. Leading scientists of that period I. N. Borozdin and A. S. Bashkirov, as well as Moscow (B. N. Zasypkin), Tatarstan (N. F. Kalinin) and Crimean (U. A. Bodaninsky, O. N.-A. Akchokrakly, R I. A special role in the publication belongs to archive materials, which are provided in a separate volume. The unique material has been prepared for publication with the support of Moscow, Saint Petersburg, Kazan, Bakhchisaray and Simferopol Archives.
