Summary
Bosnia and Herzegovina
Land of mountains
Bosnia and Herzegovina lies between latitudes 42° 26 and 45° 15 N and
longitudes 15° 45 and 19° 41 E. It consists of two entities and Brcko District,
with area of 51,129 km2. Out of total area 5% are plains, 24% hills, 42%
mountains, and 29% karst.
Centuries of coexistence and wide spectre of interactivity between biologi-
cal and geological diversity, with anthropogenic influence added, are best
seen in the exceptional ecological diversity throughout Bosnia and Her-
zegovina. Specific orography, geologic structure, hydrology and climate
contribute to this, and, in particular, forest areas recognized in Europe by
their beauty.
As the mountainous area is large, it was not possible to present all moun-
tains in this monograph. We decided on those where researches were con-
ducted, so were repeatedly visited. The monograph gives a professional
author s view of 45 mountains (Bitovnja, Bjelasnica, Bjelasnica, Busovacka
Planina, Cincar i Krug, Crvanj, Cabulja, Cvrsnica, Dinara, Grmec, Igman, Ja-
dovnik, Jahorina, Javor, Kamesnica, Klekovaca, Konjuh, Kozara, Lebrsnik,
Maglic, Mahnjaca, Majevica, Orijen, Osjecenica, Ozren, Pljesivica, Prenj, Ra-
dusa, Romanija, Sjemec, Sokolina, Srnetica, Sator, Tajan, Trebevic, Treskavica,
Velez, Visocica, Vitorog, Vlasic, Volujak, Vran, Vranica, Zelengora, Zvijezda).
The texts in the monograph resulted from visits to the mountains, talks with
local population, but also from the scarce literature on mountains. Numer-
ous data came from talks with local rangers and forestry experts, who intro-
duced me with all secrets of a forest. Hunters were unavoidable, too, who
know the mountain game, hunting and non-hunting, giving me valuable
information, and who, together with rangers, were my constant company
in mountain tours. Valuable data may also be found in topographic maps,
and in some expert and scientific publications which do not specifically
treat mountains.
The monograph also contains data published for the first time, resulting
from the author s work and systematic observations in the field.
This monograph gives basic data on a mountain, its morphology, position
and ecology, as well as practical and basic scientific knowledge of the flora
and fauna, and especially of forests as a constant object of research. Howev-
er, the book is essentially adjusted to those who want to expand their knowl-
edge of their country. Mountains in Bosnia and Herzegovina occupy more
than two fifths of its territory, namely its largest part, but over the recent de-
cades they have been threatened by unplanned urbanization, and unsolved
infrastructural issues in ever growing number of tourist settlements, which
can result in ecological catastrophe. A great threat also is disappearance of
forests due to climatic changes, but mostly due to unplanned cutting. An-
other threat comes from systematic destruction through building of small
power plants, where Mt Vranica massif is especially endangered. However,
not only forests are endangered but also the rich fauna, so some species
have already disappeared from some mountains. Mts Prenj and Cvrsnica
are examples, where chamois have been almost exterminated. Medicinal
plants are also threatened due to overexploitation in recent decades, while
unprofessional planning and activities in some protected areas endanger
the existence of numerous endemic species.
