Summary Iuliu Maniu seen by American Romanians Iuliu Maniu (1873-1953) was one of the most distinguished Romanian politicians in the twentieth century. His political activity began in the former Austro-Hungarian Empire, being one of the leading leaders of the national movement of emancipation and self-determination of Romanians in Transylvania, as well as one of the organizers of the Great National Assembly in Alba Iulia (1 December 1918) which triggered the unification of Transylvania with Romania. Leader of the Romanian National Party and National Peasant Party during the inter-war period, he also held the dignity of the Prime Minister of the Romanian Government (1928-1930, 1932-1933) and a member of the Romanian Parliament. He contributed decisively to the removal of the country from the war led by the Axis Powers and devoted his efforts to the democratic reconstruction of Romanian society in the first postwar years. He was removed from political life by the regime established by the Soviets through a judicial trial simulation (1947), and was detained in communist prisons, where he died. Iuliu Maniu is a model of dedication for the political action directed towards the development of public goods, authentic democracy and the orientation of Romania on the path of the values of Western Europe.
3l6 · Vasile Puşcaş The first groups of Romanians who headed for America and settled there, at the end of the nineteenth century - the beginning of the 20th century, came from Transylvania and the other territories inhabited by the Romanians in the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The phenomenon coincided with the entry of Iuliu Maniu into politics. Maniu was sensitive to the socio-economic and political causes and the consequences of the immigration of the Transylvanian Romanians into the New World. He cherished the support of the Romanian national struggle in Transylvania by the American Romanians at the beginning of the 20th century. In turn, they noticed that Iuliu Maniu was a new leader in the struggle of the Romanians in the bicephal empire for emancipation, and at the end of the First World War they saw in him not only the Transylvanian Romanian leader for the union with the Old Kingdom but also the leader of a New Romania, to be part of the development process and democratic meanings that the American Romanians have experienced in the United States of America. The unification of Bessarabia, Bukovina and Transylvania with Romania in 1918 and the completion of the process of creating the nation-state Romania after the First World War were elements that contributed to the finalization of the options of the American Romanians to form themselves in a united community, taking the elements of Romanian national identity for the integrative insertion into the American society. Iuliu Maniu, as well as other political, religious and intellectual leaders in Romania, continued the
interactions with the American Romanians throughout the interwar period. A special moment of this interaction was the celebration of a decade since the Great Union, when Maniu

At his invitation, a group of several hundred American Romanians attended the celebrations of the Great Unification in 1929, and they were abo frequently in direct contact with Iuliu Maniu. The American Romanians were even encouraged by his governance to support the development of trade and economic relations between the United States of America and Romania. And in the late 1930s, they were in solidarity with Maniu s efforts to raise awareness among Romanian, European political leaders and American leaders of the danger that threatened not only the political developments in Romania but also the territorial integrity of the country. The study of Iuliu Maniu s leadership and the American Romanians history reveals that the Romanian leader conceived the resistance against Nazism and its allies through a permanent relationship with the Anglo-Americans, in which he found both elements for the support of democracy and the hope of a moral-political and military support for the exit of Romania from the Axis side. He continued the same proAnglo-American orientation, abo through the resistance to the tendencies of sovietization promoted by the Soviets after 1944. Iuliu Maniu lived the tragedy of Romania s entry into communist rule, realizing that the Anglo-Americans gave the Romanian space to the interest of the USSR. In those circumstances, he urged hb collaborators and political supporters to reposition themselves in the West, especially in America, to organize a national resbtance
movement there that would be able to return to the country when the Great Powers geostrategic and geopolitical games would favor a democratic reconstruction of Romania. The post-war Romanian exile in the United States justified its political
3l8 · Vasile Puşcaş action on a mandate that it would also have received from Iuliu Maniu. In this way, he became a true symbol of anti communist resistance for American Romanians, further strengthening their community sense of the values promoted by the US politics. This volume hereby includes a study of how Iuliu Maniu was seen by American Romanians throughout the 20th century, based on archival documents, media accounts and memoirs. To illustrate the perceptions of American Romanians about Iuliu Maniu, the book also contains a set of documents, most of them being media or memorial views, covering almost the entire century. Many of these texts were included in the America s Calendar, edited by Peter Lucaci, in Cleveland, on the occasion of the commemoration of a decade after the death of Iuliu Maniu. Other documents come from the „Iuliu Maniu Foundation (New York), being hosted by Mr. Justin Liuba, its president, and Father Remus Grama from Cleveland. And some texts were extracted from the media of that time or from the memoirs published by some collaborators or supporters of luhu Maniu from the United States of America, such as C. Vişoianu and A. Cretzianu. The portrait of the politician and statesman luhu Maniu, based on the perceptions of the American Romanians, shows the characteristics of the politician that the Romanians wanted as a leader, and the Europeans and the Americans as a partner. And it certainly presents a model for the ideal politician that most Romanians want in the 21st century. Contemporary historiography can find new themes of research and
interpretation in investigating the personality of luhu Maniu in the circumstances of the twentieth-century history.
