Zusammenfassung: | Introduction. Creating: thinking with vampires -- Part I: Circulating: The seventeenth and eighteenth centuries -- Part II: Coagulating: the nineteenth century to the present -- Conclusion. Crawling and creeping: living with vampires Published to mark the bicentenary of John Polidori's publication of The Vampyre, Nick Groom's detailed new account illuminates the complex history of the iconic creature. The vampire first came to public prominence in the early eighteenth century, when Enlightenment science collided with Eastern European folklore and apparently verified outbreaks of vampirism, capturing the attention of medical researchers, political commentators, social theorists, theologians, and philosophers. Groom accordingly traces the vampire from its role as a monster embodying humankind's fears, to that of an unlikely hero for the marginalized and excluded in the twenty-first century. Drawing on literary and artistic representations, as well as medical, forensic, empirical, and sociopolitical perspectives, this rich and eerie history presents the vampire as a strikingly complex being that has been used to express the traumas and contradictions of the human condition. |

A timely and auth.orita.tive new history
— three centuries after an outbreak of
vampires terrified central Europe, two
centuries after TZie V burst onto
the literary scene
bsb
when Enlightenment reason confronted
Eastern European folklore, and when a series
of deadly, supernatural events captured the
attention of doctors, scientists and theologians
from all over the continent.
The forensic investigations that followed
were a topic of popular fascination long
before poets and writers also became prey to
vampiromania . The original vampire novel,
John Polidori s The Vanipyre, was published
in April 1819. The author s incendiary
relationship with Lord Byron helped
ensure this work had a profound impact on
contemporary sensibilities. But the literary
craze for vampires would reach its high point
with Bram Stoker s Dracula in 1897 — a novel
whose monumental creative influence still
endures in literature, TV and film.
Published to mark the bicentenary of
Polidori s classic text, Nick Groom skilfully
unearths the complex history of what has
become an iconic creature: from early medical
and forensic evidence, to the science and
superstition of blood and the body, and the
factual sources for Dracula. Above all. Groom
shows how the vampire always challenges
conventional attitudes, and why today
it has become the unlikely hero of those
marginalized and excluded.
