ABSTRACT
The volume of interviews conducted by professor of sociology
Zoltán Rostas and the psychologist Nicole Salamon aims to study
the level of integration of Romanian migrants in Greece, Using the
method of oral history, the authors have covered the majority of the
categories of Romanian migrants in the peninsula. It is noteworthy
that the interviews have been conducted last year, thus after the major
wave of migrants leaving Greece had taken place. Therefore, we can
safely say that those participating in the interviews are well integrated
migrants.
The first chapter is dedicated to the study of those who arrived
in Greece illegally. Through their stories we get to know details about
their adventurous arrival in the '90s, crossing, mostly at night, coun-
tries and borders by foot. This category of migrants has been also the
most motivated to integrate in the Greek society.
The second chapter sheds light on the people who married Greek
students, who studied in great numbers in Romania. Their adaptation
to the Greek life-style has been greatly facilitated by the new family
they became a part of.
The third chapter includes the stories of Romanians who had the
opportunity and freedom to study in Greece after 1989.
The fourth chapter comprises the testimonies of those who, in the
context of the difficult Romanian economic transition, have decided
to make ”a better life” for themselves by migrating to Greece.
The fifth chapter is dedicated to a less known category, that of the
civil war Greek political migrants who have taken refuge in Romania.
In the wake of their repatriation, a great number of the members be-
longing to the old Greek community of Romania have decided to join
them.
The sixth chapter records the stories of the most disadvantaged

category of Romanian migrants: the women who have been victims
of abuse. Their experience gives a glimpse on the masculine aggressive-
ness between traditional and pathological patterns. These interviews
have been conducted at the shelter for abused women of the non-go-
vernmental organization for womens rights Hope Spot in Thessaloni-
ki. The psychological counseling of these domestic violence victims,
during their temporary staying at the shelter, offers a rich variety of
materials for case studies.
Lastly, the seventh chapter covers the interview with the Consul
General of Romania in Thessaloniki, Martin Ladislau Salamon, taken
by the journalist and historian Apostólos Patelakis. At the end of his
term, the Romanian diplomat gives an account of the activity the in-
stitution he had presided has been involved in. He talks about the Ro-
manian Consulate and its mission to tighten the relationship between
Romania and Greece, while offering assistance to the Romanian com-
munities residing in the North region of Greece.
The book is a sum of life stories recounted in the context of the
difficult, and often dramatic, process of integration. The Romanian re-
sidents declare themselves as loyal to the Romanian national identity,
although they rarely (and often unconvincingly), declare to have any
desire to return to their country. These interviews can represent valua-
ble documents for the anthropologists who are interested in studying
”The Other”
