SUMMARY Konovalov O. Ye. Sociocultural Aspects of Art House Movies։ Ukrainian Dimensions. Monograph The monograph deals with the study of art movies as a sociocultural phenomenon. The expediency of the selected theme is conditioned, on the one hand, by the need to overcome the crisis in the contemporary socio humanitarian discourse of movies research, which is due to the neglect of the possibility of analysing the art movies as a sociocultural phenomenon, which leads to the understanding of the movies exclusively as an artistic category, on the other - the existence of a demand to study the art movies simultaneously as a formation factor and an instrument of displaying the value-normative settings of the modem Ukrainian society, which is at the stage of development and transformation. The feasibility of a comprehensive empirical study aimed at determining the value- normative content of the main stream of arthouse films in the Ukrainian movies industry, as well as the movies audience that is the consumer of such a moviestographic product is pointed out in the given work. The concept-categorical apparatus of the sociological research of the art movies has been clarified. The absence of a systematic conceptual field in the Ukrainian scientific discourse, which could be used as an instrument of the theoretical research of the art movies in the perspective of sociological interest was determined, the necessity of carrying out the terminological analysis of the scientific literature of foreign authors for the purpose of comparing both the Ukrainian and foreign terminology as
well as its further refining is grounded. Two main conceptions which determine the theoretical boundaries of the concepts of sociological research of the movies: the internal and institutional censuses, which envisage the analysis, respectively, the artistic and structuralfunctional characteristics of the studied moviestic trends are pointed out. The isolation of these concepts made it possible to suggest the author’s version of the interpretation of the relation of foreign and domestic terminology and outline the semantic boundaries of such concepts as “authors intellectual European movies”, “art films”, “arthouse movies”, “independent movies”, etc. The socio-cultural approach is selected as a methodological basis for the dissertation research. The idea of structuring the art movies in the form of a “socio-cultural triad” (P. Sorokin) was taken as the basis and the methodological approach, which involves the interpretation of the socio cultural phenomenon in the categories of individual action, social structures and institutions, cultural meanings, norms and values (Yu. Soroka). The necessity of determining the widest spectrum of functions performed by the art movies in 3
relation to the cultural system and society as a whole is due to the choice in this study of the structural- functional approach as complementary in relation to the sociocultural one. The structural and functional features of the art and mainstream moviess as institutions are also compared. The movies was considered as a field of interaction between the two spheres: film production and film consumption, which made it possible to propose a refined structure of the moviestic process, which consists of 5 stages: 1) creation of film product; 2) distribution; 3) exposure; 4) creation of scientific and critical film discourse; 5) consumption of film product. The differences between the structural elements of the arthouse and the mainstream movies institutions are revealed: in the hierarchy of the social roles of the personnel, in distribution models, in a set of material attributes of the exponential networks and in the use of the possibilities of scientific and critical moviestic discourse. Internal (cognitive-heuristic and entertaining) and external (artistic- aesthetic and commercial) social functions of the art movies and the mainstream movies are, respectively, determined. The differences in the structure of the art movies and the mainstream production capacities are revealed, which in turn determine the nature of social interaction of the moviestic process production stage personnel. The differences between the art movies and the mainstream movies in the results of their activities, which are the creation and accumulation of artistic values and the creation of a commercial
product, are determined respectively. The art movies has been analysed in the categories of socio-cultural approach. The art movies is considered as a life-style, cultural-consumer and institutionalized social practice, and the main product of the art industry, the film, is considered as a means of existence and translation of the normative and value- added content. The result of the socio-cultural analysis of the art movies was the discovery of the main factors that influence the choice by an individual of a certain type of movies. Identifying and analyzing these factors on the example of both the art movies and the mainstream movies, as well as the study of a number of interdisciplinary approaches to studying the moviestic preferences of the audience, made it possible to propose a scheme explaining the demand for various moviestographic trends. This scheme includes individual, institutional and socio-cultural factors, the definitions of which can reveal the trends in the moviestic preferences of the studied community, and vice versa, information about the moviestic preferences of the group under study allows making assumptions about its indicators such as education, income, etc. The dynamics of representation of the arthouse films in the Ukrainian film distribution field for the period of 2012-2016 and the main tendencies of
the Ukrainian film market: the growth of representation (the share of arthouse films on the Ukrainian film market has increased from 7.8 % in 2012 to 12.9 % in 2016) as well as the attendance of arthouse films in the Ukrainian film theatres network (growth by 12.33 %) is studied. In the framework of the dissertation research, an expert survey “Features of the Conceptualization of the Art Movies and the Value-normative Content of Arthouse Films in the Ukrainian Film Distribution” was conducted (2016). The resulting data made it possible to consider the possibilities of the movies to influence the audience in the context of three main concepts: psycho-emotional impact, social and economic effects. As a result of empirical data analysis, the understanding of the nature of hierarchy of the social roles of the agents of the field of moviestographic process is deepened and the concept of determination of the art and mainstream movements of the movies has been extended. The main problems of the arthouse films that have appeared on the screens of Ukrainian moviess during the last 5 years have been determined, namely: the problems of mental and psychological disorders of the personality, LGBT communities, prostitution, drug addiction, alcoholism, crime and suicide. This made it possible to conceptualize the art movies as an artistic product, which is a translator of social deviation. On the basis of empirical data obtained as a result of the author’s research “Social Portrait of the Audience: Mainstream vs. Arthouse” (March-May 2016, Kharkiv) conducted by the method of questionnaire
survey of movies audience, the main differences between social portraits of the studied categories of viewers were revealed. It is noted that such differences are traced on the example of socio-demographic characteristics: the arthouse audience is older, more educated and better off than the mainstream audience, as well as the indicators that capture the peculiarities of cultural consumption: the arthouse audience prefers paid resources and private movie watching, while the mainstream audience, on the contrary, prefers free resources and communal viewing. The scientific novelty of the research results obtained consists in solving an important problem in the field of theoretical sociology - the development of conceptual foundations to study the arthouse movies as a sociocultural phenomenon, namely: for the first time: the main determinants of the request for artistic movies by the audience were identified in the given work: the individual (personal motivation), the institutional (format of production, distribution and exhibition) as well as socio-cultural (average indicators of education level, per capita income and the share of creative labour resources of the investigated 5
community of viewers) factors. There was identified a dependence between the indicators of the above factors and the request for the art-house or mainstream film trend in a separate researched community; the main themes of arthouse films that have been released into the Ukrainian movies rental during the last 5 years have been identified. It is found out that the overwhelming majority of problems covered by arthouse films are associated with the phenomena of marginalization and deviant behaviour. It is articulated that screened behaviour patterns and the valuenormative settings of the film characters are the main means of representing the problems encountered in moviestic work. That is why films that cover issues of psychological and psychological disorders of an individual, LGBT communities, prostitution, drug addiction, alcoholism, crime and suicide are screen reflections of social deviation; the social portraits of the audience of mass and art-house movies of Kharkiv are described on the basis of the results of the author’s research conducted by the method of questionnaire survey of visitors to the movies. As a result of the analysis of the survey data, it was found out that: the arthouse audience has a higher volume of cultural capital than the mainstream one, as evidenced by such indicators as the level of education and the field of employment of viewers; differences in motivation when watching films by arthouse and mainstream audiences reflect the main functions performed by the movies: cognitive-heuristic (arthouse) and the entertaining (mainstream)one; there was
conceptualized the moviestic viewing of the art-house movie as a highly individualized leisure practice, in contrast to the mainstream movies, whose review according to the the results of the survey can be considered as a collective leisure practice; has been improved: the concept-categorical apparatus of the sociological research of arthouse movies. The author’s version of the interpretation of the relation of foreign and domestic terminology is proposed: the concept of “art movies” in the domestic discourse corresponds to the notions of the “author’s intellectual European movies”, the “author’s movies”, the “arthouse”, the “art movies” and means not only the narrative moviestic mode but also the instutionalized phenomenon; the notion of “art house” corresponds to the “arthouse movies hall” and the “art house” and means the strategy of the movies, its owners, audience and repertoire positioning; the notion of “independent movies” corresponds to “free movies” which means an institutional movies organisation outside the major American movies studios; the characteristics of the structure of the film-making process, which in this dissertation study is proposed to be considered as a closed cycle of 6
5 stages. The stages of creating, distributing and exposing the movies product have been accompanied by the stages of creating a scientific-critical film discourse and film consumption. The use of the updated structure in the dissertation research made it possible to fully analyse and compare the institutional features of the mass and arthouse movies functioning; has been developedfurther: the socio-cultural factors definition of the emergency of arthouse movies. The Americanization of the cultural space of post-war Europe, the spread of the ideology of mass culture, the censorship of the content of moviestographic works of the US production, and the “sexual revolution” are considered as the main factors contributing to the emergence of artistic movies as a separate trend of the movies; the institutional concept of the emergence of arthouse movies, in which the main determinant of the appearance and development of art movies is the independence of the form of production from the major film-making companies. The state protectionist policy of supporting national film makers, the functioning of film festivals and the creation of a scientific-critical film discourse are stated as additional prerequisites for the emergence of art movies. It is noted that moviestography as a whole and the arthouse movement are, in particular, complex socio-cultural phenomena, the study of which must be of a permanent and dynamic character. In future studies, not only the issues that have been given research attention within the framework of this thesis, will remain relevant, but there will
certainly appear new ones related to the study of the audience structure as well as the social conditionality of its artistic tastes. In this context, the results of the dissertation can serve as a theoretical basis for fhrther sociological and interdisciplinary studies of the art movies and movies in general. 7
