Summary
Alexander Dubcek was one of the best known and most popular politicians
at the turn of the 1960s and 1970s. As an icon of the Czechoslovak Spring in
1968, he was the symbol of hope for the social change so desired by both the
people living in the socialist East and those living in the capitalist West. He
embodied the vision of a better and more dignified life. In Slovakia, Dubcek
is regarded as one of the most important personalities in Slovak history and he
still inspires the Italian and French left.
Dubcek’s ingratiating personality and image of a “decent man” represented
an advantage and weakness at the same time. He could never become the
prototype of a hero without “fear and blame” as he was too consensual and
no rebel at all. There was nothing in his political past that would predestine
him to great deeds. The non-existence of extremes in his life provoked rest-
lessness and disappointment. But brooding over why Dubcek did not behave
in the way that now seems the most appropriate cannot be the basic approach
to writing his scientific biography. It is much more important to explain the
reasons for his actions.
Dubcek was a child of the communist movement in the first half of the
20th century. He did not know a better alternative than socialism and his up-
bringing in the spirit of this ideal was all encompassing. Family, community,
and the state where he lived his childhood created an impermeable wrapping
around him that prevented any controversial thought. His parents were entirely
committed to the communist ideas which led them to Soviet Russia. Dubcek
returned to Czechoslovakia at the threshold of maturity at a time when the
state started to disintegrate under the pressure of Nazi Germany. He joined the
resistance and fought in the Slovak National Uprising. February 1948 seemed
a logical and desired outcome of the after-war development.
Alexander Dubcek was not an intellectual with a broad scope of vision or
deep education. The hopes he had for communism were simple and pragmatic.
They contained the vision of a decent life in peace void of economic insecuri-
ties. With flawless class origin, his career as a young and loyal member and
strong supporter of the Slovak Communist Party rapidly progressed.
He was never a dogmatic fanatic. He progressively built the reputation of
a “decent man” who preferred discussion to dictate. But he also learned to
survive in a merciless world of party intrigues, moral compromises, and duels

of functionaries and fractions. He also had to come to terms with the dilemma
which accompanied the communist experiment since the beginning, that is,
the difference between imagination and reality.
Dubcek realized for the first time that everything was not all right in the
Eastern Block during his stay in Moscow in the years 1955-1958. He expe-
rienced the de-Stalinizing shock and the period of the “Khrushchev thaw” in
the very centre of the communist movement. Both of these phenomena were
manifested in Russia much more intensely than in Czechoslovakia. Dubcek
became Khrushchev’s admirer. Apart from the partial liberalisation of the
communist regimes, he also adopted the dusted off thesis that there are several
ways to communism and that the socialist states were theoretically entitled to
choose the most appropriate one.
At the beginning of the 1960s, nothing seemed to predestine Dubcek to
the role of a leading reformist. It is characteristic that he entered into conflict
with the first secretary of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia, Antonín
Novotny, against his own will. This conflict became the life-and-death fight
which was unexpectedly won by A. Dubcek. The result was his famous and
meticulously documented eight starry months as an icon of the Czechoslovak
Spring. After the political humiliation and social condemnation which fol-
lowed the Warsaw troops invasion, the second part of Dubcek’s political life
started. Even in his difficult situation during the normalizing period, he repeat-
edly commented publicly and openly disapproved of the distorted interpreta-
tion of the reforming process.
He tirelessly repeated that the objective of the party under his leadership
was the renaissance of socialism. Although he was isolated and ignored by the
representatives of the communist regime and by the dissenters in Czechoslo-
vakia, he enjoyed considerable respect on the side of the European democratic
left. During the 20 years of the normalizing regime, Dubcek further developed
his attitudes. He returned to the original values of the socialist movement and
leaned on the common principles of democracy, humanism, and socialism.
Finally, he found himself in the European social democracy.
November 1989 enabled A. Dubcek to return to politics. In spite of being
a known symbol of one of the strongest movements that the Czech and Slovak
societies experienced in the 20th century, he remained alone. Although he was
still the ingratiating personality and international political “superstar”, it soon
became obvious that his comeback would not happen. He did not fit into the
new political elites who perceived the Czechoslovak Spring as a futile effort
to prolong the life of the communist regime. The preference given to Vaclav

Havel, the key figure of the Czechoslovak dissidents, for president suggested
the final and brisk farewell to the previous developments. On the other side,
the defeated candidate, A. Dubcek, personified an attitude that required a fol-
low-up. But this attitude at the beginning of the 1990s resulted in his position
as an isolated and politically powerless icon of a bygone era.
It is precisely A. Dubcek who represents the link between the present so-
ciety with its history before 1989. The message of his life is simple: one has
to respect and accept the proper past be that as it may. The place of Dubcek
in our history is not as much the question of an evaluation of his individual
actions or his entire life but rather the question of our attitude to the nation’s
proper history after 1948.
